Week 13 - Unit 11 - Revision Methods

This document discusses three methods for revising academic writing: rewriting, peer editing, and proofreading. Rewriting involves revisiting a piece of writing after time has passed to evaluate things like whether the essay fully answers the question, if paragraphs are balanced, and if the argument develops logically. Peer editing involves sharing work with another student to get feedback on content, organization, and unnecessary information. Proofreading is the final step to check for typographical errors, grammar mistakes, spelling errors, and other small issues before submitting the final draft. These revision methods help improve writing by addressing both larger structural concerns and smaller technical errors.

CONTENTS
1. Rewriting
2. Proofreading
3. Peer editing
1. Rewriting
• Process of looking back on your writing and
making changes to make it better
– Distance yourself from your work → leave it
alone, at least overnight
– Pick it up again, now you can begin to revise it
– Make yourself these questions…
1. Rewriting
a) Does this essay fully answer the question in
the title?
b) Do the different sections/paragraphs of the
paper have the right weight? (=balanced essay)
c) Does the argument or discussion develop
clearly and logically?
d) Have I forgotten any important points that
would support the development?
1. Rewriting
If you answered “no” to some of the questions before, then
you should…:
• Add information, quotes, words, or punctuation that you
think will help make your piece clearer or more descriptive for
your reader
• Subtract information, quotes, or words that you think don't
really add anything to your writing, or might confuse your
reader
• Move information, quotes, words, or even entire paragraphs
that you think would make more sense somewhere else
• Change or Substitute content in order to make your reading
clearer, more unified, or more descriptive
Exercise 1: How could this paragraph be
improved?
2. Peer editing
• Showing your work to another student to
improve your writing → it helps the writer receive input
and guidance, and it also helps the peer editor understand
how to improve his or her own writing
• Steps to follow:
1) Read your partner’s work several times
2) What is it about? What is the writer’s purpose?
3) Identify ThS, TS, SS, CS
4) Identify unnecessary info. or where there is not
enough info. (Introduction? Conclusion?...)
5) Don’t look for grammar or spelling mistakes
Just pay attention to the content and organisation
3. Proofreading
• Checking your work for small errors that make it
more difficult for the reader to understand exactly
what you want to say:
– smaller typographical errors
– grammar
– spelling
• Last step you take before sending off the final draft
of your work for evaluation
• It comes after you have addressed larger matters:
style, content, in-text citations, and organisation
during rewriting and peer editing revisions
• Close and careful reading of the text
Exercise 2: These are the most common types of
error in academic writing. In each case, underline
the error and correct it
