Bugtong - Bugtong - Tag-Ulan O Tag-Araw, Hanggang Tuhod Ang Salawal

The document contains several Filipino riddles or "bugtong" with answers that must be deduced. It also includes examples of solving rational equations, such as finding the least common denominator, multiplying both sides by the LCD, and solving for the variable. Real-world examples are provided like painters sharing work to find how long it will take them together.

Rational equations

Learning Activity Plan 6

At the end of the lesson you are
expected to:

 Differentiate Rational expression and Rational Equation

 Know the steps in solving Rational Equations

 Solve Rational Equations

 Represents real-life situations using Rational Equations

Rational expression
is a quotient written in the form where p and q are
polynomials and q ≠ 0.

It is just like a fraction, but with polynomials.

Rational equation
is an equation consisting of at least one
rational expression. These rational
expressions may be on one or both sides of
the equation.
Extraneous Solutions

A false solution to certain types of equations.

Extraneous solutions are discarded in solving such
equations.
Steps to Solve Rational Equations are:

Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) of the denominators.

Multiply the LCD with both sides of the equation using Multiplication
Property of Equality.
Simplify the equation to get the value of the variable.

Check the results to make sure there isn’t an extraneous solution.

Verify the result by substituting the value of the variable (optional).
1 𝑥 +1 LCM: (x-3)
=
𝑥−3 𝑥 −3
Solution:
LCD : x – 3

(x-3) (x-3)
Multiply the LCD with both sides of the equation
1 =x+1 using MPE

x=0 Simplify the equation (Solve for x)

Check This is your answer

= Substitute 0 from the original equation

Simplify.
True
1 2
= LCM: x(x-1)
Solution:
𝑥 𝑥 −1
LCD : x (x-1)

(x)(x-1) (x)(x-1)
Multiply the LCD with both sides of the equation using MPE
(x-1) 1 = 2 (x)
x-1 = 2x
Simplify the equation
x - 2x = 1 Solve for x
-x =1
-1 -1
x = -1
Check This is your answer

-1 = -1 Substitute -1 from the original equation

Simplify.
True
𝒙 −𝟔 Factors
= 𝟐
𝒙 −𝟑 𝒙 −𝟖 𝒙+𝟏𝟓 x2 – 8x + 15 = (x – 3)(x – 5)
Solution:

LCM : (x – 3)(x – 5)

(x-3)(x-5) (x-3)(x-5)
Multiply the LCM with both sides of the
(x-5) x =-6
equation using MPE
- 5x = - 6 Simplify the equation
- 5x + 6 = 0
(x - 3) (x – 2) = 0 Quadratic Equation (factor)
x-3 = 0 x–2=0 Solve for x
x= 3 x=2

This is your answers

𝑥 −6
Check: 𝑥−3
= 2
𝑥 − 8 𝑥 +15

Substitute 2 & 3 from the original equation

x=2 x=3

Since 3/0 is undefined it means that x = 3 is not a

-2 = -2 solutions
Extraneous Solutions
This is a solution
x+2 LCM: x -1
= 0
x−1
Solution:
LCM: x -1
=0
(x-1) = (0) (x-1)
Multiply the LCM with both sides of the equation
x+2 =0 using MPE

x = -2 Simplify the equation. Solve for x

This is your answer

Check
=0
=0 Substitute -2 from the original equation

0 =0
Simplify.
True
x2 − 4
. = 0
x −2
Solution
2
x − 4
= 0 Factor
x −2
( 𝑥 −2)( 𝑥 +2)
= 0 Cancel
x −2
x+2 = 0 Solve for x

x =-2 This is your answer

2 3 1 LCM: 12x
+ =
3x 4 x
Solution:
2 3 1 LCM: 12x
+ =
3x 4 x
Multiply the LCM with both sides of the
2 3 1 (12x)
(12x) + = equation using MPE
3x 4 x

8 + 9x =12 Simplify the equation.

9x = 12 - 8 Solve for x

9x = 4
9 9

x =4/9 This is your answer

x2 − 4x + 2
= 0
𝑥 +2
Solution X

x2 - 4x + 2 = 0 X

Example:
If a painter can paint a room in 4 hours and her assistant can paint the room in
6 hours, how many hours will it take them to paint the room working together?
Let x be the time it takes them to paint the room together.

Formula
A = time taken by 1
st
person = 4 hours
=

B = time taken by 2 person = 6 hours

Solution
1 1 1
x =time taken if they both do the work together = x

Words of Wisdom (W.o.W)

“Coming together is a beginning.

Keeping together is progress.
Working together is a success.”
Henry Ford
This proverb by Henry Ford can very well highlight the
importance of working together in teams. The ability to work in
teams is one of the most vital soft skills needed in improving a
firm’s performance (Jones et, 2008). Work is one of the most
popular examples of rational equations.
