What is a case?

• A Case is a simulated client or teammate scenario

• You will be presented with a short business problem


- It is your job to qualitatively and quantitatively respond to the information provided,
and communicate your answers

• You can expect to receive a live case and/or a take home case

What is a live case?

• You will be presented with a short business problem on the spot


- It is your job to qualitatively and quantitatively respond to the information provided,
and communicate your answers

• A live case demonstrates your ability to:


- Approach complex or ambiguous problems in unfamiliar
businesses
- Structure your thinking
- Reach sensible conclusions in a short timeframe based on
the available facts

• These skills are critical to being a successful consultant

• The case is a conversation, not a test

What is a take home case?

• You will be presented with a short business problem a few days in advance
- It is your job to qualitatively and quantitatively respond to the information provided,
prepare an excel and PowerPoint presentation, and communicate your answers

• A take home case demonstrates your ability to:


– Approach complex or ambiguous problems in unfamiliar
businesses
– Structure your thinking
– Present and storyboard
– Skills with PowerPoint and/or Excel
– Synthesize insights from data
– Handle clients

• These skills are critical to being a successful consultant

• The case is a conversation, not a test

There are several critical points to consider when interacting
with the interviewer

• First five minutes are critical


– Make a positive first impression
– Demonstrate social skills necessary for consulting
• It’s OK to ask questions
– Show that you can think effectively on the fly
• It’s OK to take notes
• Let them know what you’re thinking – this is critical, • It’s OK to lay out a few options before
choosing your course
and often overlooked
• It’s OK to propose an idea, talk it through,
• It’s perfectly fine to ask for a couple moments during then reject it
the live case to get your thoughts together. Do this • It’s OK to not know something – but say how
you would find it out
throughout the interview, then be prepared to talk it out
• It’s OK to present more than one conclusion
• Manage your notes/presentation cleanly and logically
• Build multiple hypotheses covering breadth of options
• Respond to interviewer signs that you’re off-track
