The importance of science education lies in its ability to provide students

with the essential knowledge and skills they need for their everyday lives and future

professional endeavors. Laboratory work has long been recognized as an

essential component of science education, as it allows students to engage in

hands-on experiments, develop inquiry skills, and deepen their understanding of

scientific concepts. Through a descriptive-quantitative research approach, this

study explored the satisfaction level of BSED Science and BS Biology students at

North Eastern Mindanao State University- Main Campus regarding the availability

and utilization of science laboratory equipment and facilities and their perceived

confidence level in performing laboratory activities. The findings revealed that

students expressed higher satisfaction with the availability of laboratory facilities

and equipment. Moreover, they were extremely satisfied with the services provided

by laboratory personnel and the maintenance of equipment. However, satisfaction

levels varied across different courses, with students being undecided about their

satisfaction in Biology courses, less satisfied in Chemistry courses, and not

satisfied in Physics courses. In general, the respondents reported lower

satisfaction with the utilization of laboratory resources due to insufficient number

of specific equipment, leading to challenges in accommodating many students

simultaneously. Nonetheless, students expressed confidence in their ability to

perform laboratory activities. The study concluded that while the availability of

laboratory facilities and equipment is generally satisfactory, the utilization of these

resources needs improvement, particularly in Chemistry and Physics courses.

Addressing the challenge of accommodating a more significant number of students

through increased equipment availability is crucial. The study also emphasized the

significant relationship between student satisfaction and confidence in performing

laboratory activities. This study contributes to understanding student perceptions

and experiences related to science laboratory resources, highlighting the need for

ongoing efforts to optimize laboratory environments and enhance the quality of

science education.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction
Science is an important subject to be taught at school because it

encompasses the answers to most of our questions relevant to our daily lives.

More so, it is essential for its connections to technology and industry, both of which

are high-priority fields for growth on a national scale. It offers logical approaches

to making sense of the world. It fosters learners' scientific inquiry abilities, attitudes,

and beliefs, including objectivity, curiosity, honesty, and mental practices such as

critical thinking. Science supports students to investigate their environment and

learn new things. It is also a hands-on subject with activities such as laboratories

and experiments (Das et al., 2014).

The field of science education has always emphasized the importance of

laboratory work in learning science. Laboratory activities allow students to

experience science firsthand, develop their inquiry skills, and understand scientific

concepts through experimentation. Many scientific researchers have suggested

that students' learning and understanding levels improve when they are engaged

in science laboratories for practical experiments (Tobin, 1990). The psychomotor

domain is developed with practical activities which involve laboratory facilities and

equipment (Kouser et al., 2022).

A school laboratory, whether open or closed, acts as a supplementary

facility for the teaching and learning process and is utilized for lab work, inquiry,

experimentation, improvement, and standardization. Generally, a laboratory is a

specific service provided by an educational institution to aid in the learning process

(Lukum & Paramata, 2015). Moreover, according to Lukum & Paramata (2015),

students are internal university customers from academic and administrative

perspectives. For students to be satisfied as clients of educational services, their

needs and expectations should be met. Therefore, the availability and utilization of

science laboratory equipment and facilities play a crucial role in enhancing the

quality of science education in order to satisfy the students. Furthermore, Maristela

et al., (2015) also defined satisfaction as a term that covers issues with students'

perceptions and experiences during their college years. As a result, the institution

will be placed in a competitive environment, with service-oriented institutions under

pressure to demonstrate that their services are customer-focused and that

continuous performance improvement is being implemented.

The students’ satisfaction with the availability and utilization of science

laboratory equipment and facilities is believed to enhance learning and

performance and boost their confidence in performing laboratory activities.

According to Moneva & Tribunalo (2020), self-confidence refers to someone's

power and ability to perform the required tasks. In order to accomplish the given

tasks, a student must have self-confidence. When students are confident, it builds

their self-esteem as an individual. Furthermore, self-esteem is an expression of

2

Website: www.nemsu.edu.ph

value, confidence, or love, and these are fundamental elements required to

achieve psychological balance and feeling with self-satisfaction. It is a self-

judgment that determines the extent of the psychological balance achievement. If

the balance is positive, it gives the individual the ability to perform proper reactions

and a feeling of happiness. This allows one to face life difficulties (Alsalkhi, 2018).

Additional research has discovered that believing in oneself boosts performance.

Albert Bandura and Robert Wood, for example, observed that self-confidence

enhances problem-solving, adaptability, and performance in general (Welp

Magazine, 2022).

It is important that an institution or university knows if their customers, the

students, are satisfied with the facilities, services, equipment, etc., provided to

them. In line with this, the researchers came up with this study, which aims to

determine the satisfaction level of students with the availability and utilization of

science laboratory equipment and facilities. Several studies were conducted that

aimed to determine the satisfaction level of students with the availability and

utilization of laboratories. However, in this study, the researchers aimed to fill the

gaps from previous studies by determining the satisfaction level concerning the

perceived confidence level of graduating students from BSED Science and BS

Biology programs at the North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) Main

Campus.

Theoretical Framework

Learning satisfactory evolved from Cardozo's (1965) customer satisfaction

theory. Learning satisfaction results from the processes that occurred throughout

the instructional and educational experiences in which the students engaged.

Furthermore, contentment can be considered as a comparison of the results of

expectation as well as perceived service with pleasure or dislike (Wu et al., 2015).

Moreover, the learning satisfaction theory states that learners are education

product customers with the right to invest in whatever learning facility they choose.

According to the learning theory known as constructivism, knowledge is best

acquired through a process of reflection and active mental building (Mascolo &

Fischer, 2005). As a result, knowledge entails multidimensional interpretation. The

learner must consider the content and provide a judgment based on previous

knowledge, values, and cultural background. The first form of radical

constructivism, also called the theory of cognitive constructivism, holds that how

an individual constructs knowledge is determined by their interpretation based on

their operational experience. One of the founders of constructivism theory was

Jean Piaget. His thoughts imply that individuals gain knowledge by integrating their

thoughts and experiences. His theory of constructivism provides the basis for

radical constructivism since he believes that each person is at the heart of the

process of knowledge building and transmission.

Furthermore, Dewey’s thought is perhaps most known for his influence in

Website: www.nemsu.edu.ph

what is known as progressive education. Progressive education is a school of

thought that highlights learning by doing. Dewey argued that people learn most

using 'hands-on' activities; this positions Dewey in the pragmatist school of thought

in education. Pragmatists believe that reality must be experienced. According to

Dewey's educational theory, children must engage with their surroundings to

adjust and learn. He recognized that both teachers and pupils ought to gain

knowledge together. His perspective on the learning environment was profoundly

anchored in democratic ideas, which fostered equal opportunity among all

learners.

Conceptual Framework

CHED Memorandum Order no. 7, series of 2017 on the Policies, Standards,

and Guidelines for Bachelor in Secondary Education (BSEd) and Bachelor of

Science in Biology (BS Biology) mandates that the courses must utilize science

laboratories to demonstrate a deep understanding of scientific concepts and

principles and apply scientific inquiry in teaching and learning.

Figure 1 illustrates the relationships between the factors of the research

paradigm. As depicted in the figure, the first box presents the science laboratory

equipment and facilities that are perceived to influence the two variables of the

study, which are the student's perceived satisfaction level with the availability and

utilization of science laboratory equipment and facilities and the student's

perceived confidence level in performing science laboratory activities.

Other factors that may influence the students' satisfaction, such as

accessibility, environment, services, and maintenance of the science laboratory

equipment and facilities, were also included. The relationship between the two

variables, the students' satisfaction level and confidence level, was also tested.

Furthermore, after the results are obtained, the output of the study are the

recommendations to enhance the university's science laboratory equipment and

facilities.

Statement of the Problem

This research primarily focused on determining the satisfaction level of

students with the science laboratory equipment and facilities concerning the

perceived confidence level in performing science laboratory activities as

graduating students. To attain all the essential knowledge, data, and information

needed for this study, the research sought to answer the questions as follows:

1. What is the level of satisfaction of the respondents as to:

1.1 Availability of science laboratory equipment and facilities

1.2 Utilization of the science laboratory equipment and facilities in

different courses.

1.3 Accessibility of science laboratory equipment and facilities.

1.4 The environment of science laboratory facilities.

1.5 Services of science laboratory facilities.

1.6 Maintenance of science laboratory equipment.

2. What is the respondents' confidence level in performing science

laboratory activities?

3. What are the problems encountered by the respondents with the science

laboratories’ equipment and facilities?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the satisfaction and

confidence level of the respondents in performing science laboratory

activities?

Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between the satisfaction and confidence

level of the respondents in performing science laboratory activities.

Teaching science, therefore, requires a different approach. Schools should

provide learners with opportunities to learn about different strategies and

processes. Schools must allow learners to learn about diverse approaches and

procedures. It has been discovered that educational institutions can get the best

results for their pupils when they combine classroom or textbook teaching with

science laboratory experiments. The equipment used in science labs and the

experiments that are conducted help students learn more about science and create

a more sincere interest in the subject. This is due to the fact that knowledge

acquired in schools and through books is only helpful if the underlying principles

and procedures are understood and learned. Students can use the information

from books and the natural world in science lab equipment to improve practical

logic and reasoning (Segura, 2015).

Additionally, professional education faculty should be concerned with

students' satisfaction as a result of the educational process because it has been

shown that it is connected to their later professional attitudes, career dedication,

and retention. As it can assist an institution in improving its programs and services,

staying accountable to students, and remaining competitive, it has been

acknowledged as the primary factor of rivalry among universities (Bashir et al.,

2021).

Since most biological specimens are plants and animals abundant in the

environment, biology and chemistry can be studied indoors and outside because

they are natural sciences. However, some laboratory supplies, including reagents,

might not be found elsewhere. Therefore, it is crucial to have a well-stocked lab

with accessible and suitable facilities. Laboratory facilities must be accessible and

utilized effectively for science teachers to carry out their duties in teaching science.

The lack of or improper use of laboratory facilities in teaching science by secondary

school science instructors is one of the leading causes of this anomaly (Orji &

Ebelle, 2012).

Moreover, laboratories play a significant part in acquiring technical skills

(Darwas, 2020). Every year, surveys on student satisfaction are administered in

all pertinent labs, and the results are used to inform ongoing development. The

changes affected the overall satisfaction level, laboratory records, the educational

process, computer resources, technical tools, and lab settings. According to the

findings of Afthanorhan et al., (2019), laboratory records' activity and clarity, as

well as the standard of the equipment utilized, were the two elements that most

affected students' satisfaction.

Furthermore, higher education is becoming more and more critical as a

service business, and educational institutions are focusing more on meeting

students' expectations and needs. In order to draw students and meet their needs,

suppliers must comprehend the demands of higher education and students'

opinions of the level of service. To maintain business viability in the competitive

service market, higher education institutions must continue to provide high-quality

services and satisfy customers. The value of measuring service quality in higher

education lies in identifying important aspects of service delivery. As the recipient

of the service exchange and the buyer, the student is assumed to be the customer

in this scenario, which is based on a customer-led strategy. Prior studies on service

quality in higher education have frequently emphasized academic services,

including the caliber of instructors, teaching materials, instructional strategies,

assessment, and student involvement (Seng & Ling, 2013).

Students are a university's internal customers from both an academic and

managerial standpoint. Students' happiness is evaluated in order to learn more

about the caliber of the learning. For students to be satisfied as customers of

educational services, their wants and expectations must be met (Margono, 2015).

Student satisfaction is students' subjective assessments of how effectively a

13

Website: www.nemsu.edu.ph

learning environment facilitates academic performance. Intense student

satisfaction implies that appropriately challenging instructional methods trigger

students' thinking and learning (Lo, 2010). The quality of education services

supplied by Higher Education institutions could lead to student satisfaction in the

learning process (Palese & Usai, 2018). Quality assessment is an essential cross-

disciplinary field in information systems, marketing, and operations management

(Chan et al., 2019).

Local

Student engagement and involvement in learning are critical for effective

learning, particularly in science education. This has been thoroughly argued in a

variety of literature and academic findings. As stated in K to 12 Science Curriculum

Guide 2016, science is a practical discipline that uses an inquiry approach,

necessitating hands-on, minds-on, and hearts-on activities that emphasize the

importance of active learning. Science education programs nationwide are

influenced by the principles of "learning by doing." Individual or group students

learn in the laboratory through observation, practice, and practical experiments

with materials and phenomena. This allows them to relate to and reinforce the

theoretical concepts covered in class (Hadji-Abas & Marasigan, 2020).

However, the lack of scientific laboratory facilities, equipment, and

instructional materials is a problem in many public schools across the country.

Even in schools with specialized scientific programs, there is an issue with a

14
Republic of the Philippines
North Eastern Mindanao State University
Rosario, Tandag City, Surigao del Sur 8300
Website: www.nemsu.edu.ph

learner's interaction with a science laboratory. Several institutions no longer

conduct laboratory operations because of a lack of necessary equipment. A survey

participated by 173 teachers from different provinces in the Philippines shows that

there are still 23% that do not have access to a laboratory, and only 39% have

access to at least one laboratory dedicated to a specific field of science. Modern

instrumentation, such as measuring sensors, is limited to 15% of the respondents.

This limits the capacity of teachers to guide students’ learning through

experimentation and hands-on activities (Roxas-Villanueva et al., 2015).

The shortage of science education facilities is shown in the low

accomplishment scores of Filipino children on numerous examinations, which

represent the poor quality of fundamental science and math education (Jalmasco,

2014). Furthermore, no current school has comprehensive science laboratory

facilities, even for specialized scientific programs.

To overcome these issues, the country must emphasize science,

technology, and innovation, with excellent and efficient scientific education as a

critical part. Hence, science laboratories in schools are critical for students'

development of scientific literacy. The laboratory is the heart of science, where

people can put theory into reality (Borja & Marasigan, 2020).

Additionally, the results of particular research indicate that student

satisfaction has a favorable effect on students' motivation, retention, recruitment

efforts, and fundraising. Using the students' satisfaction, institutions can increase

the overall quality of service rendered to their customers. Satisfaction of customers

is the key to establishing and maintaining a long relationship. This plays a critical

role in gaining a sustainable competitive advantage (Alimen & Gildore, 2020). Also,

satisfaction covers issues of students' perceptions and experiences during the

college years. As a result, the institution will be placed in a competitive

environment, where it will be necessary to show that its services are customer-

oriented and that continuous performance improvement is being carried out

(Maristela et al., 2015). For this reason, developing student satisfaction is the other

key aspect of improving and providing the necessary materials to satisfy the

students (Dagoc et al., 2020).

At various periods, Nigeria's federal and state governments implemented

several reforms and efforts to enhance science education in primary, secondary,

and university institutions. To give boys and girls equal opportunity to learn

science, some of them include changing the science curriculum used in schools,

establishing organizations like the national science and technology development

center, and opening science equipment centers (Thompson, 2007).

According to Ping (2015), one of the ways to appreciate science teaching

and learning is through effective laboratory instruction. One defining aspect of

science education for a long time has been the laboratory. Additionally, laboratory

learning may become more significant in fostering the paradigm shift in science

education, provided that the learning activities are created with an inquiry-based

through metacognitive processes and interactions with their peers and teachers.

As Segura (2015) stated, science lab equipment allows students to interact

directly with the data gathered. They obtain firsthand knowledge by performing

numerous experiments on their own. Students are assisted in understanding

various scientific theories and concepts using the models. Furthermore,

instruments and materials utilized in school science laboratories have been proven

to simplify teaching and learning for teachers and learners. Specific scientific

theories and thoughts from the literature might be challenging to translate

immediately. For example, science kits in physics, chemistry, and anatomy make

it simple to grasp otherwise difficult scientific subjects.

According to a study cited by Nikolic (2015), several studies related to

student satisfaction with services, such as student satisfaction at Ethiopian Public

Higher Educations Institutions (PHEIs), have low service quality. The low service

is on the dimensions of reliability and physical evidence. Students consider these

two dimensions necessary but perform poorly regarding service quality. In order to

increase satisfaction with the quality of student services, university management

efforts that focus on aspects of reliability and physical evidence are needed.

Many scientific researchers have claimed that when students are involved

in science laboratories for practical experiments, their learning and understanding

levels improve. According to Dey (2017), learning theoretical knowledge via

classroom teaching is far from sufficient in studying science as a stream in biology

and chemistry. Chemistry study, having no practical application, is a man without

a nervous system. Performing in a chemical lab entails various dangers, leading

to students' poor or lacking confidence. Proficient working in a laboratory

environment with the required and appropriate set of guidance acts as a key to

boosting the student's confidence level. In this instance, proper handling of

chemicals and laboratory basics based on scientific methods is critical. Another

fundamental cause for the lack of confidence in this learning needs a lack of

experience in handling the various apparatus, while adhering to the appropriate

safety standards in the course of autonomous and also group work in the chemistry

laboratory.

As cited in a study by Inyang (2021), Okeke (2013) in his study stated that

if the laboratory is to be effective, learners must actively participate in doing their

own thinking, developing solutions to issues, utilizing their own hands and minds,

and so advancing in skill development after each laboratory experience. Inyang

also cited a study which opined that the exposure of students to laboratory

activities and experiments is the hallmark of the science discipline both for skill

acquisition, understanding of the basic principle, and application of science.

Local

A study by Rebulanan & Samala (2021) indicates that educators have

worked hard to provide every student with the high-quality education they are

entitled to. Science is a subject that requires attention to be taught effectively,

18

despite how crucial it is for all courses. The study aimed to determine how the

many elements, influencing the academic performance of science high school

students in the Philippines, correlated with one another. The researchers'

quantitative-descriptive technique was utilized to highlight the collection of raw

data with a particular emphasis on the utilization of lab tools, instructional

materials, and the Science teacher's skill in delivering instruction. The study's

findings indicate no correlation between the academic performance of chosen

Filipino high school students and the utilization of laboratory equipment, the use of

instructional materials, or the teachers' proficiency in teaching science.

Additionally, increasing the quantity and quality of the laboratory facilities is

suggested. It is also encouraged to keep using instructional materials to enhance

learning. Furthermore, it is advised that the educational institution create programs

that will continuously improve its teachers' education and professional growth to

raise their level of expertise in science and other areas of the field.

One of the factors essential in the study is the availability of learning

resources. Laboratory spaces, equipment, apparatus, and technology are

examples of learning resources. Teachers' interests and behaviors are influenced

by their work environments just as much as students' interests and behaviors are

by their learning materials (Allawan, 2021). Teaching laboratories are

acknowledged as distinctive learning spaces supporting inquiry-based learning in

the study by Alimen & Gildore (2020). Learning and student satisfaction are

related. Learning in this situation entails lab work and troubleshooting. Better

learning conditions encourage better learning. Therefore, the laboratory is

essential to students' learning and happiness. Universities cannot be complacent

when it comes to student satisfaction with laboratory usage.

Students in all programs benefit significantly from science laboratories.

These should give opportunities for direct engagement while emphasizing the

exploratory nature of science. Sufficient functional laboratory equipment is critical

for learning and client satisfaction. According to Maristela et al., (2015), certain

educational institutions can use the measurement of student satisfaction to help

them consider their strengths and identify the areas that need improvement. Higher

Education (HE) students were regarded as the "primary customers" of a university

in the Philippines. Students are the primary beneficiaries of the institution's

services. It is to reaffirm that the student is treated as a consumer with the right to

be valued and to have his or her satisfaction met.

It was also stated that student satisfaction might be utilized to guide

universities in assessing their strengths and identifying areas for growth. Most

universities have discovered that good-quality facilities are an essential factor in

students' school selection. Institutions may improve the overall quality of service

provided to their consumers by leveraging student satisfaction. Customer

satisfaction is essential for establishing and maintaining long-term relationships.

This is considered a vital role in gaining a sustainable competitive advantage. The

physical facilities of universities are regarded as an essential component in

developing students' competence in their fields of specialization.

Some studies cited by Redondo et al., (2019) mentioned that student

experience and satisfaction matter to educational institutions and students.

Students are crucial to universities; therefore, their personal experiences,

knowledge, and understanding of educational institutions must represent their

opinions or judgment instead of those specified by the universities. The authors

also state that assessing the experience of students using both satisfaction and

significance ratings will allow educational institutions to determine their existing

degree of service quality. Satisfaction is a well-studied issue in both academic and

non-academic (workplace) contexts. In academic contexts, satisfaction among

students' data assists colleges and universities in making their curriculum more

responsive to the requirements of a changing marketplace. It is critical to examine

effective measures for each institution, department, and program in order to make

the curriculum more efficient and responsive.

Furthermore, in the study of Moneva & Tribunalo (2020), the satisfaction

level will be associated with the students' confidence level in performing science

laboratory activities. Self-confidence relates to someone's ability and willingness

to do essential tasks. To accomplish the given tasks, a student must have self-

confidence. Several activities that must be completed and demonstrated can be

defined as performance tasks. Knowledge, skills, and imagination are required to

complete the assigned tasks. The researcher conducted several investigations to

determine how self-confidence is linked to task performance. Academic

achievement is correlated to a student's level of self-confidence. That is, students

who are confident show high academic achievement, and students who are not

confident show low academic achievement.

Synthesis

Based on the cited foreign and local literature and studies, students in all

programs benefit significantly from science laboratories. These should give

opportunities for direct engagement while emphasizing the exploratory nature of

science. Sufficient functional laboratory equipment is critical for learning and client

satisfaction. Students' satisfaction is related to their learning. In this context,

learning involves laboratory exercises and troubleshooting. A better environment

fosters better learning. As a result, the laboratory is crucial to student satisfaction

and learning.

The cited studies focused only on assessing the satisfaction level of the

students towards laboratory facilities and equipment. This study is different

because another factor was evaluated: the perceived confidence level of the 4th-

year students in performing science laboratory activities. It was also expected in

this study to determine the significant relationship between the satisfaction and

confidence level of the students in performing laboratory activities.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the research design, locale, research respondents,

research instruments, data gathering procedures, and statistical treatment of the

data needed and used in the study.

Research Design

The researchers used the descriptive-quantitative method for this study.

The process of collecting and interpreting numerical data is called quantitative

research. It may detect patterns and averages, make predictions, evaluate causal

linkages, and generalize results to larger groups. Descriptive research seeks to

characterize a population, circumstance, or phenomenon correctly and

methodically. It can answer what, where, when, and how questions, but not why

questions (Bhandari, 2020).

A descriptive survey was utilized in this study, with survey questionnaires

intended for gathering the data needed for the study. Through this, it helped the

researchers acquire the necessary data to build the study. Also, the data gathering

carried out the level of satisfaction of BSED Science and BS Biology students with

the availability and utilization of the laboratory facility and equipment as well as

their confidence level in performing laboratory activities.

Research Locale

The research was conducted at North Eastern Mindanao State University

(NEMSU Main-Campus) located at National Highway, Rosario, City of Tandag

province of Surigao del Sur. It is approximately situated at 9.03895°, 126.21533°

on the island of Mindanao. NEMSU is a state university with its main campus in

Tandag City and six other satellite campuses in Cantilan, Lianga, Cagwait, San

Miguel, Tagbina, and Bislig City. Moreover, the researchers selected the main

campus in Tandag City to be its setting of the area of study to assess the situation

of the student's satisfaction and confidence enrolled in the school.

Research Respondents

The respondents of this study were the randomly chosen 4th year students

under the Bachelor of Secondary Major in Science program from the College of

Teacher Education and Bachelor of Science in Biology program from the College

of Arts and Sciences in the North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU)

Main Campus. Moreover, the respondents have common Biology, Chemistry, and

Physics courses. The total population of both programs is 176, and Cochran's

formula was used to determine the sample size of the respondents. This was to

ensure that the information obtained was reliable and valid, sufficing to represent

the population of the two programs mentioned. From the population, the

researchers utilized probability sampling via the fishbowl method, which involves

random selection of the 121 respondents of this study. This allows the researchers

to make strong statistical inferences about the entire group.

Research Instrument

The researchers utilized a researcher-made questionnaire to answer the

problems posed in this study. It underwent content validation and reliability test to

suit the objectives of the present study. Content validity is the extent to which a

measure covers the construct of interest. According to Jhangiani and Chiang

(2015), it is used to carefully assess the measurement against the conceptual

definition of the construct. In the present study, three (3) experts (Appendix B) were

tapped to validate the questionnaire in terms of clarity of direction and items,

presentation/organization of items, suitability of items, adequateness of items per

category, and attainment of the purpose objectively: scale and evaluation in the

rating system. The purpose of content validation was to ensure that the

questionnaire was not ambiguous, and content was appropriate. Validation sheets

are appended as Appendix D.

Furthermore, to ensure reliability, internal consistency was also employed.

It measured how consistent the respondents' responses were across all items on

multiple measures. Internal consistency was determined using Cronbach's Alpha

(α) (Chiang et al., 2015). A reliability test was employed by pilot testing the content-

validated questionnaire to 30 randomly selected respondents from BSED Science

and BS Biology. They were selected since they already utilized the laboratory

facilities and equipment at NEMSU Tandag. The researchers randomly selected

the respondents of the pilot testing from the students who were not included in the

respondents of the final survey. Pilot testing was used to determine how well the

interviewer and sample of respondents understood the questions. Data obtained

during pilot testing was computed using Cronbach α. With the present study having

26

North Eastern Mindanao State University
Rosario, Tandag City, Surigao del Sur 8300
Website: www.nemsu.edu.ph

a Cronbach value of .965, the questionnaire was said to have good internal

consistency.

The questionnaire (Appendix C) consists of three parts: Part I was the

students' satisfaction level with the availability and utilization of the university's

science laboratory facilities and equipment.

Secondly, Part II was the perceived confidence level of the respondents

regarding performing science laboratory activities. Lastly, part III was about the

issues/problems the respondents encountered while utilizing science laboratory

equipment and facilities.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers sought first the approval from the Dean of the College of

Teacher Education and the Dean College of Arts and Sciences of North Eastern

Mindanao State University–Main Campus (Appendix A) to allow them to conduct

the study. Upon granting the request, the researchers personally administered the

questionnaires to the respondents. In the administration of the questionnaires, the

following procedures were adopted.

The researchers administered the same set of questionnaires to all the

respondents after they had given their consent to participate in the study. The

researchers used a setting where the respondents could religiously read and

correctly answer the questionnaires. The rapport between the researcher and the

respondents was established to put them at ease and develop self-confidence.

Website: www.nemsu.edu.ph

The researchers did this by introducing themselves, briefly introducing their study,

and mentioning the problem they observed in the college.

Statistical Treatment

The data gathered in this study were tallied and analyzed after it was

subjected to the following statistical treatment:

Descriptive statistics. This study used descriptive statistics, particularly

mean. According to Bhandari (2020), descriptive statistics summarize and

organize characteristics of a data set. A data set is a collection of answers or

findings from a sample or population. In this study, the weighted mean was used

to measure the average of the respondent's responses to the survey questionnaire

that was administered to them.

Pearson correlation coefficient (r). This study used the Pearson

correlation coefficient (r) to determine if there was a positive, negative correlation,

or no correlation at all between the variables of this study, which were the

satisfaction level of the 4th year students on the availability and utilization of

science laboratory equipment and facilities and their perceived confidence level.

The Pearson correlation coefficient is a descriptive statistic, which means that it

summarizes the characteristics of a dataset. Specifically, it describes the strength

and direction of the linear relationship between two quantitative variables (Turney,

2022).

Ethical Considerations

The researchers informed the respondents of the sole purpose and process

of the study, for them to know what kind of study they were participating in. Their

participation was entirely voluntary, and none of the respondents were forced; if

they refused to participate, they were free not to give any information. Furthermore,

the respondents were fully oriented to the benefits of the results of the study for

them to recognize the study's significance. No offensive or harmful words were

included in the research instrument to avoid conflict and harm to the respondents.

Based on the results, the students responded that in terms of science

laboratory facilities, they are extremely satisfied with the services category. The

satisfaction expressed by students suggests that the laboratory personnel have

provided practical assistance and support. The personnel have been

knowledgeable, approachable, and responsive to students' needs and inquiries.

Their willingness to help and expertise in maintaining the functionality of the

laboratory facilities likely contributed to the students’ satisfaction. In addition, the

student's satisfaction with the services category suggests that the laboratory

personnel have efficiently delivered their services. Timely assistance, prompt

responses to inquiries, and organized processes likely contributed to the students'

overall positive experience. Efficient service delivery ensures that students can

make the most of their time in the laboratory and maximize their learning

opportunities.

A study by Margono (2015) stated that the satisfaction level measured to

learn more about the learning quality was the students' satisfaction. Satisfaction

refers to the achievement of students' wants and expectations as customers of

educational services. Moreover, satisfaction covers issues of students' perceptions

and experiences during college. As a result, the institution will be placed in a

competitive environment where it will be necessary to show that its services are

customer-oriented and that continuous performance improvement is being carried

out (Maristela et al., 2015).

are 'More Satisfied' with their utilization of the science laboratory equipment, which

has a mean of 3.87. Overall, the students perceived they were 'More Satisfied' with

the science laboratory equipment, with an overall mean of 3.84.

The results suggest that the students are satisfied with all the factors

involved in the science laboratory equipment: availability, accessibility,

maintenance, and utilization. It means that the equipment is available in the

different science laboratories, is accessible, is maintained, and can be utilized for

laboratory activities.

Among the factors, the students are very satisfied with the maintenance of

the science laboratory equipment. This can be attributed to the student's

experiences during their laboratory activities. This implies that the students are

satisfied with how the educational institution upholds safety and hygiene standards

within the science laboratories. Regular maintenance ensures that the equipment

is clean, safe to use, and in proper working condition. This commitment to safety

and hygiene is crucial to creating an environment where students can engage in

laboratory activities without compromising their well-being.

Science laboratories are of great help to students in all programs. These

Table 4 shows the level of satisfaction perceived by students in the

utilization of science laboratory facilities and equipment for different subjects,

which are divided into three main courses of science: biology, chemistry, and

physics. Generally, the results depict that the students are 'Less Satisfied' with

their utilization of science laboratory facilities and equipment in their utilization of

science laboratory facilities and equipment with a mean of 2.24.

In biology courses, the data revealed that the course with the highest mean

is Cell and Molecular Biology, with a mean of 3.81 and an adjectival rating of 'More

Satisfied.' This means that the students are more satisfied with their utilization of

the science laboratory facilities and equipment in the Cell and Molecular Biology

course. It implies that the respondents could utilize the science laboratory facilities

and equipment more often during class and laboratory activities.

As they utilized the science laboratory facilities equipment, they were able

to gain knowledge and skills through conducting hands-on activities related to the

course. The experience they gained from those hands-on activities, particularly

those activities where they conducted experiments, made them satisfied with their

utilization of the science laboratory facilities and equipment in the Cell and

Molecular Biology course.

On the other hand, the course that got the lowest mean is Microbiology and

Parasitology, with a mean of 1.75 and an adjectival rating of 'Not Satisfied.' This

means that the students are not satisfied with their utilization of the Science

laboratory facilities and equipment in the Microbiology and Parasitology course. It

implies that the subject might not have utilized the laboratory facilities and

equipment enough to satisfy the students due to some issues or problems. Some

equipment is also limited and can only accommodate some of the students during

their laboratory classes, particularly in the Microbiology and Parasitology course,

36

which requires several microscopes for the class. As a result, the respondents

were not satisfied with their utilization of science laboratory facilities and

equipment.

Overall, the data perceived that the respondents are ‘Neutral’ with their

utilization of science laboratory facilities and equipment in Biology courses with a

mean of 3.07. The neutral response suggests that students' experiences with the

utilization of science laboratory facilities and equipment vary. Some students may

have had positive experiences, finding the resources adequate and helpful in their

learning process. On the other hand, some students may have faced challenges

or limitations that affected their satisfaction with the facilities and equipment. Also,

the neutral response may be attributed to factors beyond the availability of

laboratory facilities and equipment influencing students' satisfaction. It is essential

to explore these factors further, such as the quality of instruction, guidance,

support, or the organization and maintenance of the laboratory. Generally, this

implies that the students are undecided about their level of satisfaction with their

utilization of the science laboratory facilities and equipment.

In Chemistry courses, the data show that the course with the highest mean

is Analytical Chemistry, with a mean of 3.57 and an adjectival rating of 'More

Satisfied.' This means that the students are more satisfied with their utilization of

the Science laboratory facilities and equipment in the Analytical Chemistry course.

It implies that the respondents were able to utilize the science laboratory facilities

and equipment more often during class and laboratory activities, which made them

feel satisfied. The respondents could utilize the necessary equipment needed in

their class discussion to gain the desired outcomes for the course. With this, the

respondents were able to have hands-on experience with the Science equipment

provided by the instructor during the laboratory class or activity.

On the other hand, the course that got the lowest mean is Biochemistry,

with a mean of 1.68 and an adjectival rating of 'Not Satisfied.' This means that the

students are not satisfied with their utilization of the Science laboratory facilities

and equipment in the Biochemistry course. It implies that the subject might not

have utilized the laboratory facilities and equipment enough to satisfy the students,

particularly with the necessary equipment that could provide additional knowledge

of the different concepts in Biochemistry. Also, the time needed for the course to

conduct laboratory activities could have been utilized more thus, resulted in a lower

satisfaction level of the respondents.

Overall, the data show that students are 'Less Satisfied’ with their utilization

of science laboratory facilities and equipment in Chemistry courses, with a mean

of 2.06. This implies that the respondents were not able to feel satisfied with their

utilization of the science laboratory facilities and equipment because the courses

might not have utilized the laboratories to satisfy the students, mainly by having

experimentations and activities that could supplement their learning during the

discussion of the different Chemistry courses. Also, chemicals and reagents might

be a significant factor in affecting the respondents' satisfaction since insufficiency

38

and unavailability of these will definitely dissatisfy the respondents during

laboratory activities.

In Physics courses, the data show that the students are 'Not Satisfied' with

all the Physics courses, with an overall mean of 1.58. This implies that the

respondents, particularly the BSED Science students with physics courses, were

not able to feel satisfied with their utilization of the science laboratory facilities and

equipment, which might be attributed to factors such as insufficient activities,

simulations, and demonstrations not provided in these courses.

In total, the students are ‘Less Satisfied’ with their utilization of science

laboratory facilities and equipment in their utilization of science laboratory facilities

and equipment in the three main courses of science. It implies that the students

need more utilization of the science laboratory facilities and equipment from

different subjects in order to reach their satisfaction. The lower satisfaction level

suggests that the courses may have primarily focused on theoretical discussions

rather than providing ample opportunities for students to engage in hands-on

activities. This limited exposure to practical applications of scientific concepts may

hinder students' understanding and retention of the subject matter.

Moreover, the lower satisfaction may also be attributed to the lack of

availability or accessibility to adequate science laboratory facilities and equipment.

Insufficient resources can hinder students' ability to engage in hands-on activities

and experimentations, limiting their understanding of scientific concepts. Another

implication of the discrepancy between students' satisfaction and their utilization

39

of science laboratory facilities and equipment is the misalignment between the

teaching methods employed and the student's learning preferences. Some

students may benefit more from experiential learning, where they can actively

engage with the subject matter rather than passive lectures or discussions.

Students' satisfaction is related to their learning. In this context, learning

involves laboratory exercises and troubleshooting. A better environment fosters

better learning. As a result, the laboratory is crucial to student satisfaction and

learning. Universities cannot be complacent regarding student satisfaction with

laboratory utilization (Alimen & Gildore, 2020).

activities.
Table 5 shows the perceived confidence level of students in performing

science laboratory activities. The data show that two indicators got the highest

confidence level, with a mean of 3.60 and an adjectival rating of 'More Confident.'

The first indicator is their confidence level as graduating students that they have

obtained the knowledge and skills from laboratory activities which they need for

future work, and the second indicator is their confidence level in applying their

present knowledge and skills in their future field of specialization.

This means that the students are more confident that they have obtained

the knowledge and skills from laboratory activities they need for future work. The

students' confidence implies that they believe they have acquired practical

knowledge that will be valuable in their chosen fields.

Also, the students are more confident in applying their present knowledge

and skills in their future field of specialization. This further implies that the

respondents got the specific knowledge and skills as they were able to experience

and perform different laboratory activities, which makes them confident that they

can apply it in their future field of specialization. This suggests that the laboratory

activities were designed to simulate real-world scenarios or were tailored to align

with the student's future career paths.

The indicator having the least mean is “your confidence level in using or

manipulating Physics laboratory equipment," with a mean of 3.21 and an adjectival

rating of "Confident." Although it has gained the least mean, the students are still

confident in using or manipulating Physics laboratory equipment. The students'

confidence could also stem from prior experience or exposure to Physics

laboratory equipment. It is possible that they have encountered similar equipment

in previous courses or had opportunities for hands-on experimentation in previous

years. This familiarity and experience could contribute to their confidence levels,

even if the mean score is relatively lower compared to other indicators.

Overall, the students perceived they were 'Confident' in performing science

laboratory activities, with an overall mean of 3.39. This implies that the

respondents were able to perceive that they were confident in terms of performing

science laboratory activities because they were able to have hands-on experience

in performing science laboratory activities from different subjects, mainly

conducting experiments, identifying various laboratory apparatus, and determining

the functions of different laboratory apparatus. This indicates that the laboratory

curriculum and teaching methods have effectively equipped students with the

necessary skills and knowledge to navigate and utilize laboratory apparatus and

conduct experiments. Moreover, the confidence reported by students implies that

they have been able to apply their theoretical knowledge in practical settings. By

engaging in hands-on activities and conducting experiments, students have had

opportunities to bridge the gap between theory and application, deepening their

understanding of scientific concepts and enhancing their problem-solving skills.

According to Dey (2017), proficient working in a laboratory environment with

the required and appropriate set of guidance acts as a key to boosting the

confidence level of the students. Proper handling of the chemicals and laboratory

essentials based on scientific processes becomes crucial in this case.

Table 6 shows the problems encountered with Science Laboratory

Equipment and Facilities. The data indicates that one of the indicators has the

highest mean of 3.91 with an adjectival rating of 'Agree.' This means that the

students agree that they have encountered a problem of an insufficient number of

specific equipment that can only accommodate few students. On the other hand,

the other indicators got an adjectival rating of 'Neutral,' which means that the

students neither agreed nor disagreed. Overall, the total mean is 3.0 with an

adjectival rating of 'Neutral,' which means that the students neither agree nor

disagree to the problems encountered in the science laboratory equipment and

facility.

Based on the results, the problem encountered in the Science Laboratory

Equipment and Facility is the insufficient number of specific equipment, which

cannot accommodate many students; this is a problem in terms of availability. This

indicator is the major problem that most of the respondents encountered. This is

because majority of the laboratory equipment cannot accommodate even the

minimum number of students per class. This indicates a mismatch between the

number of students and the available resources, resulting in students not having

equal access to the necessary equipment. There are a lot of students per class,

and there is a limited number of facilities and equipment present in the university.

Limited capacity can hinder the learning process and create disparities among

students regarding practical exposure and skills development. In addition, the lack

of equipment creates inequities in students' learning experiences. Some students

may have more access to equipment due to limited resources, smaller class sizes,

or other factors, while others may struggle to obtain hands-on experience.

Website: www.nemsu.edu.ph

In the study conducted by Roxas-Villanueva et al. (2015), they emphasized

the lack of scientific laboratory facilities and equipment and instructional materials

in many public schools across the country. Even in schools with specialized

scientific programs, there is an issue with a learner's interaction with a science

laboratory. Because of this problem concerning necessary equipment, several

institutions no longer conduct laboratory operations. This limits the capacity of

teachers to guide students learning through experimentation and hands-on

activities.

Table 7 reveals the significant relationship between the respondents'

satisfaction and confidence level in performing science laboratory activities. As

shown in the table above, the students’ level of satisfaction with the availability of

science laboratory equipment and facilities and their confidence level in performing

science laboratory activities depict a computed r of 0.450, and a p-value of 0.000;

this resulted in the conclusion of a significant relationship of the two factors.

45
Republic of the Philippines
North Eastern Mindanao State University
Rosario, Tandag City, Surigao del Sur 8300
Website: www.nemsu.edu.ph

Moreover, students' level of satisfaction with the utilization of science laboratory

equipment and facilities and their confidence level in performing science laboratory

activities depicts a computed r of 0.393, and a p-value of 0.032, which resulted a

significant relationship. All of the variables tested have a significant relationship

since the p-value is less than 0.05 or the 5% significance level.

Henceforth, this implies a significant relationship between the level of

satisfaction with the availability and utilization of the science laboratory equipment

and facilities and the respondents' confidence in performing science laboratory

activities. Since the variables correlate, it can be inferred that if the respondent is

satisfied with the availability and utilization of the science laboratory equipment

and facilities, it also results in a higher level of confidence in the performance of

the science laboratory activities. This suggests that a well-equipped and

adequately utilized laboratory environment contributes to students' confidence and

competence in conducting experiments and manipulations.

On the other hand, if the student is not satisfied, it might result in a low

confidence level in performing science laboratory-related activities. This suggests

that inadequate or suboptimal laboratory resources and practices may undermine

students' confidence and hinder their ability to engage in laboratory activities

effectively. Student involvement and participation in the learning process are

crucial for meaningful learning, especially in science education. The result of the

conducted research by Alimen and Gildore (2020) indicates that student

satisfaction has a favorable effect on students' motivation and retention. As Okeke

(2013) stated in his study, if the laboratory serves its purposes successfully, the

students must be actively involved in thinking, evolving solutions to problems,

using their own hands and heads, and growing skills development at the end of

every laboratory experience.

Chapter 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of the findings, the conclusion derived

from the findings, and the recommendations based on the conclusions.

Summary of Findings

The study aimed to determine students' satisfaction level with the

availability and utilization of science laboratory equipment and facilities concerning

their perceived confidence level as graduating BSED Science and BS Biology

students at NEMSU Main Campus. The researchers validated the gathered data

and developed the findings based on the interpreted and analyzed data. It was

found that students were more satisfied with the availability of science laboratory

facilities and equipment. In terms of facilities, it was revealed that they were

extremely satisfied with the services offered by the laboratory personnel.

Also, regarding the equipment, it was revealed that the students were more

satisfied with the maintenance of the laboratory equipment. Furthermore, it was

found that the respondents were undecided about their satisfaction level in biology

courses, less satisfied in chemistry courses, and not satisfied in physics courses.

Overall, it was revealed that the respondents are less satisfied with their utilization

of the science laboratory equipment and facilities in different courses. It was also

found that the respondents perceived themselves as confident in performing

science laboratory activities. It was also revealed that certain insufficient pieces of

48
Republic of the Philippines
North Eastern Mindanao State University

Website: www.nemsu.edu.ph

equipment that could not accommodate many students was a common problem in

terms of availability encountered by the respondents with science laboratory

equipment and facilities. Finally, it was found that there is a significant relationship

between the level of satisfaction and confidence of the respondents in performing

science laboratory activities.

Conclusions

Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn.

The researchers found that while students are generally satisfied with the

availability of laboratory facilities and equipment, they are less satisfied with their

utilization of these resources in different courses, particularly in chemistry and

physics. The respondents perceived themselves as confident in performing

laboratory activities, but insufficient numbers of certain equipment to

accommodate many students remain a significant challenge. Generally, the study

rejected its hypothesis because there was a significant relationship between the

level of satisfaction and confidence of the respondents in performing science

laboratory activities, highlighting the importance of addressing issues related to the

availability and utilization of laboratory equipment and facilities to enhance student

satisfaction and confidence in their scientific pursuits.

Recommendations

Based on the preceding conclusion, the following recommendations can be

stated.

49
Republic of the Philippines
North Eastern Mindanao State University
Rosario, Tandag City, Surigao del Sur 8300
Website: www.nemsu.edu.ph

First, it is recommended that the institution and government address the

issue of insufficient equipment by procuring additional resources. They may

conduct a thorough assessment or inventory of the required equipment, chemicals,

reagent, and facilities for each science course with laboratory and ensure an

adequate supply to meet the demands of all students. They may also consider

investing in versatile equipment that can be utilized across multiple courses.

Specific compartments and stock rooms for different laboratory equipment are also

recommended for easier access and safety.

Second, the instructors and laboratory personnel may develop strategies to

improve the utilization of laboratory facilities in different courses. This may involve

scheduling adjustments, optimizing the allocation of resources, and promoting

cross-disciplinary collaboration to maximize the use of available facilities.

Lastly, the instructors and the institution should regularly solicit student

feedback regarding their laboratory experiences. Create channels for students to

express their concerns, suggestions, and ideas for improving laboratory facilities,

equipment, and overall satisfaction.
