Troubleshooting with the Image Phantom (Revised)

In order to visualize the image phantom properly, select 66 kV and

6 mA during x-ray scans.

Tape the copper strip over the vertical line on the sensor as further beam attenuation. Note: The
copper strip cannot extend below the bottom of the sensor

The Phantom images can be precisely measured by using the application program called “IMAGEJ”
which is included within the Progeny Imaging workstation software. Other image management
applications programs may also be used if they include a reliable, calibrated measuring feature.

Note: Proper positioning of the image phantom and the cuspid laser is
essential to phantom image evaluation.

Misalignment of the image phantom or the Cuspid Laser will affect all
subsequent images produced.
Verify the image phantom is firmly placed on the patient table. The position
of the image phantom should leave no gaps between the phantom
mounting block and the patient table casting.

The cuspid laser must be in the center position. Use the smallest alignment pin and insert it in the hole
underneath the Cuspid Laser to center the Laser wheel. Remove the pin.

PHYSICAL MANIFESTATIONS

Note: Ideally alignment circles are equally focused both above and below the horizontal centerline

Round alignment circles only in focus above the horizontal line (below out of focus)

1. This indicates that the focal trough is too far from the vertical column.
2. Perform the X axis patient table alignment.
3. If problem persists, inspect the condition of the cuspid position potentiometer. Replace if necessary.
4. Perform cuspid position pot calibration.
Round alignment circles only in focus below the horizontal line (above out of focus)

1. This indicates that the focal trough is too close to the vertical column.
2. Perform the X axis patient table alignment.
3. If problem persists, inspect the condition of the cuspid position potentiometer. Replace if necessary.
4. Perform cuspid position pot calibration.

The central horizontal line has an arch

1. The requirement is an arch of less than 6 millimeters

2. An arch in the horizontal line, either up or down from the center could be an indication of a
mechanical distortion in the symmetry of the overhead casting.
3. Perform realignment of X, Y and R axis and patient table alignment.
4. If not corrected Seek replacement of the Pan system with a Refurbished unit.

Vertical lines are not equidistant from center

1. The specified length on each side from center is 78 mm ± 3 mm and ± 3mm between sides
2. Perform the C-Arm “Zero Position” alignment.
3. If problem persists, perform Y-axis alignment.

Horizontal line is too long / too short

1. The specified line length is 156 mm ± 6 mm,

2. If the image measurement is not within the tolerance specified perform the X axis patient table
alignment.
3. If problem persists, inspect the condition of the cuspid position potentiometer. Replace if necessary.
4. Perform cuspid position pot calibration.

Vertical lines are not perpendicular to the horizontal plane

1. The requirement is to be perpendicular; center line is within 4° L/R line is within 6°

2. Verify that the vertical lines are equidistant.
3. If so, perform the Y-axis table alignment.
4. Inspect the condition of alignment between the x-ray tube, collimator and sensor.
5. Seek replacement of the Pan system with a Refurbished unit.

Horizontal line is tilted

1. The tolerance is a tilt of less than 6 mm

2. Perform the patient table alignment
3. If problem persists it may be due to a tilt in the horizontal line, either up or down from the center is
an indication of mechanical distortion in the symmetry of the overhead casting.
4. Seek replacement of the Pan system with a Refurbished unit

TMJ markers are not equivalent

1. Perform the C-Arm “Zero Position” alignment.

2. If problem persists, perform Y-axis alignment.

X Axis Table Position Adjustments

b. To make the Phantom Image larger – Move the X axis screw in counterclockwise
direction, this will move the overhead towards the column
c. To make Phantom Image smaller – Move the X axis screw in clockwise direction, this will
move the overhead away from the column
d. Ratio of movement of lead screw is 1:3
e. Example: For moving the image from overall length of 154 mm to 157 mm, that is
increase of image length by 3 mm requires screw block to be moved by 1mm.

To change length of left side – right side image

Move Y axis table position

➢ To make Phantom Image larger at left hand side on the monitor – Move the Y axis screw
in counterclockwise direction, this will move the overhead towards right when the PAN
is viewed from the front
➢ To make Phantom Image smaller on the left – Move the Y axis screw in clockwise
direction, this will move the overhead towards left when the PAN is viewed from the
front
➢ Ratio of movement of lead screw is 5mm per revolution (Usually move in increments of
1/8th of rotation)

To change angle of the center 2 lines on the image

Move Y axis table position

➢ To Make lines move counterclockwise – Move the Y axis screw in clockwise direction,
this will move the overhead towards left when the PAN is viewed from the front
➢ To Make lines move clockwise – Move the Y axis screw in counterclockwise direction,
this will move the overhead towards right when the PAN is viewed from the front
➢ Ratio of Movement of screw not defined (Usually move in increments of 1/16th of
rotation).

6. Confirm system alignment and functionally by using the Image Phantom making a couple test
images.
