1. A river flows south. A boat leaves the west shore at 10 m/s and maintains its course at [E 30o N]. The resul?ng
velocity vector is perpendicular to the current.
b) If the boat takes 10 minutes to cross, calculate the width of the river.
2. On a beau?ful summer day, a northwest wind blows at 30 km/h. A helicopter, according to its instruments is
flying at a speed of 150 km/h towards the northeast. The helicopter follows this course for 2 hours, then takes a
new course towards the east for an hour.
3. Isabelle travels 800 m east in a Sea-Doo, at 20 km/h, then she travels 600 m north at 30 km/h.
4. AMer takeoff, an airplane travels east at 260 km/h as indicated by onboard instruments. AMer 2 hours of flight,
the airplane is 560 km [E 10 ° N] from its star?ng point.
5. The minute hand of a clock is 7 cm long. The second hand is 6 cm and the hour hand measures 4 cm.
a) Calculate the distance traveled by the >p of the minute hand between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
b) Calculate the displacement of the >p of the minute hand between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
c) What is the displacement of the >p of the hour hand between 3h and 6h?
Answers

1) A person walks 5.0 metres forward and then 3.0 metres back in 4.0 s.
2) An object travels for 5.0s at 15m/s and then changes direction and travels for 100m at 8.0m/s.
3) A bird flies 80 km/h in the direction of E 60° N. The wind blows in the direction of N 45° W at
10 km/h causing it to divert from its intended course.
Taking the wind into account, what is the bird's resultant velocity?
4) Anderson runs a distance of 3 km in the direction S 45° W and then he changes the direction and
runs 4 km in the direction W 30° N. The entire run takes 2 hours.
5) Willamena, a worker bee, is ready to gather pollen. On her way out of the hive she meets one of
her fellow workers, Gertrude, who is just returning. Gertrude tells Willamena, in bee-dance
language, that there is a good pollen source 0.6 km [W 50° S] of the hive. However, before she
gets a chance to leave the hive, Willamena meets another incoming bee, Ruth. Ruth tells
Willamena that there is an excellent pollen source 0.9 km [N 70° E] from the hive.
If the overachieving worker Willamena is to visit both of these pollen sources in the order in
which she learned of them, what would be her displacement from the first source (Gertrude's)
to the second source (Ruth's)?
