EL109 – SPEECH AND THEATRE ARTS
Instructor: Mirasol D. Gaoiran, MAEd
CHAPTER 5: Principles and Characteristics of a Good Speech
Answer the following questions:
1. What do you love about the art of public speaking?
Answer: What I love about the art of public speaking is how it empowers me to
share information and express my opinions with clarity and confidence. It’s a
platform where I can connect with diverse audiences, bridging gaps in understanding
and creating a sense of unity. Public speaking also grants me the ability to influence
and inspire, potentially sparking positive change in people’s perspectives.
Additionally, it allows me to interact with a wide range of individuals, fostering
valuable connections and expanding my network.

2. What do you hate about public speaking?

Answer: One aspect of public speaking that I find challenging is the tendency for
some audience members to not actively engage or listen attentively. It can be
disheartening when I put effort into crafting a meaningful speech, only to feel that it
hasn't resonated or left an impact. Another difficulty arises when unforeseen
hindrances, like technical issues or distractions, disrupt the flow of my presentation.
These moments can be frustrating and require adaptability to navigate effectively.

3. How do you feel about the life on a road?

Answer: Embracing a life on the road aligns with the principles of adaptability and
versatility crucial in delivering a good speech. While it can be demanding, the
constant exposure to diverse environments and audiences hones my ability to
connect and communicate effectively. It cultivates a heightened awareness of
potential challenges, allowing me to anticipate and address them proactively.
Additionally, the varied experiences gained from traveling enable me to infuse a
broader perspective into my speeches, ensuring they resonate with a wide range of
individuals. This nomadic lifestyle not only complements the characteristics of a
skilled speaker but also enhances my capacity to engage and inspire regardless of
the setting.

4. In what ways does the relationship between speaker and audience sustain
you, and in what ways not?
Answer: The relationship between speaker and audience serves as a source of
both motivation and occasional frustration. On one hand, the energy and
responsiveness of an engaged audience can be incredibly uplifting, providing a
sense of validation and encouragement. It fuels my passion for public speaking and
drives me to continuously improve. However, there are times when the connection
may not be as strong. If the audience is disinterested or unresponsive, it can be
disheartening, making it harder to maintain momentum and enthusiasm throughout
the presentation.

5. What do you want your audiences to remember of your presentation?

Answer: When I step in front of an audience, I aim for them to remember me as a
compelling and effective communicator. Beyond that, I want them to retain the core
ideas and messages I've conveyed. It's important that they not only learn something
valuable from my presentation but also find it enjoyable and engaging. Ultimately, I
hope to leave a lasting impression that sparks curiosity, prompts reflection, and
inspires positive action long after the speech has concluded.
