The creative couple behind Birdstreet Yarn
combine their love of craft with an artist’s eye
for colour to create beautiful hand-dyed yarns
and a thriving family business.

Not all couples could cope with the 24/ 7 together ness of r un n ing
a shared venture from hom e, but Clare and J on Bird love the
creativit y and sen se of com mun it y that Birdstreet Yar n has
brought into their lives.
“Mostly it’s absolutely fine working together!” laughs Clare.
“We do have our m om ents, of course, but usually I’m in one room
and he’s in another and we get on with what needs to be done.”
“We always get together to listen to Pop Master on Radio 2
in the mornings,” says Jon. “But I probably struggle the most
with switching off. I know the constant ‘shop talk’ drives Clare a
bit mad! But the yarn dyeing is just one part of the job – there’s
finances, advertising and social media too, and it can't always be
done in conventional business hours.”
A change of pace
Wh ile r un n ing their own venture m ay have its challenges, they
have no regrets about leaving their for m er lives beh ind. Clare
had always worked part-time in admin roles, to be available for
their t wo son s after school wh ile they were growing up, but the
foundations of the brand were laid when she took up knitting
around ten years ago, and then began dabbling in yar n dyeing.
“I started making fabric project bags for knitters and
crocheters initially, and then I picked up some undyed yarns and
had a go at dyeing them,” she says. “Jon’s job was very stressful at
the tim e, so I suggested we dye som e yar n together; I thought it
would be a fun way for h im to relax. It soon got to a point where
we had produced quite a lot of yar n so we decided to put it in m y
Etsy shop and see what happened, and it sold incredibly quickly.”
Before co-founding Birdstreet Yarn, Jon had a 29-year career
in education, 15 of those as headteacher of a pr im ar y school,
regularly working long hours. “Even when I came home, although
I was present, my head was elsewhere and I knew something had
to change,” he says. “So, in January 2019, we made the decision
that if we were going to tr y doing som eth ing else, now was the
time. I resigned from my job and decided I would work part time
teach ing and dye wool for the rest of the tim e. We didn’t have a
big plan when we star ted, it was about having fun, improving our
skills and going with whatever colours grabbed us.”
Of course, the couple could not have foreseen at the tim e that
the Covid-19 pandemic was just over the horizon, and although

Clare adm its it was a “crazy, stressful tim e for ever yone”,
especially for J on who was still juggling par t-tim e teach ing work,
the lockdowns did give the fledgling business a welcome boost.
“It turned out to be fortuitous timing, in many ways. Our
business really took off as crafts became so popular, and we were
very busy with yarn dyeing. It helped us to establish a fantastic
customer base, which was important as the hardest thing has
been building up a reputation as there are a lot more independent
yar n dyers out there now compared to six or seven years ago.”
Colour therapy
For both Clare as a maker, and Jon as a visual artist and
profession al photographer, they’ve found that it’s their un ique

eye for combining colours that really sets their brand apart.
“Most of our dyeing is done around par ticular colour palet tes,”
explain s J on. “We ver y rarely produce just one colour; in stead,
we start off with a colour palette and branch off with a number
of different colourways, whether they are tonals, variegated or
speckled yarns that all fit together. We get very positive feedback
from shows and online because people can explore across a range
of colourways and see how they all fit together.”
Many of their customers have been drawn magpie-like to
their beautiful displays at yarn shows. “A lot of people tell us they
str uggle to put colours together,” Clare says. “Hand-dyed yarn is a
luxur y item and people don’t want to m ake expensive m istakes, so
we’ve built up a bit of a service helping people to put yarn colours
together, usually supported by Jon.”
“Ever y week we get m essages on In stagram asking for help
with par ticular pat ter n s and choosing a palet te,” says J on. “We
can take photos of different yarn combinations that might work
for them, and they can go from there. Or they may have a yarn
already and need som eth ing to go with it, so we can help choose
som eth ing complem entar y.”
The couple d raw in spiration for new colour ways from their
day-to-day lives together, especially in n ature. With their t wo
grown-up sons having flown the nest – they are celebrating their
30th wedding anniversary this year – they love taking long walks

Crochet I have always believed

that anyone can learn to
crochet, so long as you
follow one simple rule:
don’t try to run before you
can chain! The chain is the
most simple of stitches
and therefore ideal for
practising the all-important hold, which helps create
the perfect tension for forming all the following
stitches. When my mother taught me to crochet,
she followed her grandmother’s lead and helped
me to hook metre upon metre of chain before
I was shown any further stitches. It was a fantastic
foundation for learning the more difficult
techniques. Once your chains are looking even
and feel comfortable to create, then progressing
on to the stitches becomes much easier.
If at any point you feel as if you have lost your
hold, simply go back to those comforting lengths
of chain until your confidence returns. My biggest
tip is to remember that this wonderful craft is well
known for being relaxing and fun, so find a comfy
