Elements and Compounds

This lesson plan introduces students to the concepts of elements and compounds in chemistry. Students will learn to differentiate between elements and compounds, and be able to identify pure substances as either elements or compounds. They will make a visual presentation identifying common elements and their names, symbols, and uses. The lesson involves a poem about lost elements, classroom discussions comparing characteristics of elements and compounds, and an activity where students categorize words as describing elements or compounds.

LESSON PLAN CHEMISTRY 7

Elements and Compounds

Content Standards: The learners demonstrate understanding of classifying substances as elements or compounds.

Performance Standards: The learners should be able to make a chart, poster, or multimedia presentation of
common elements showing their names, symbols, and uses.

Most Essential Learning Competencies: Recognize that substances are classified into elements and compounds.
(S7MTIg-h-5)

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. differentiate compound from the elements it is composed of; and
b. identify the given pure substance as element or compound.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Topic: Elements and Compounds
Materials: Periodic Table of Elements, Visual Aids, Pictures
References: Science learning Module, Science – Grade 7 Self-Learning Module
Integration: poem (English), Natural resources (Earth Science), Proper waste disposal (Health)

III. PROCEDURE
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
1. Prayer and Greetings
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Classroom Management
4. Review of the Past Lessons

B. MOTIVATION
Ask the students what comes into their minds when they heard the word “ELEMENT”. (Students may
have varied answers like wind, fire, water and earth.)

ACTIVITY
Have the students read the poem “The Lost Element”.

THE LOST ELEMENT

by: Jaypee Kadalem Balera

I think I was lost

My home is too far at any cost
I am tired finding home-made of lead
So that solar radiation will not anymore be spread,
The heat from Sun makes me float
Like Helium inside a balloon that makes it bloat
As I go far, I feel numb and bursting

Like a bullet powder made of Potassium Nitrate that makes us shaking

I hope I can go home now

I feel my lungs did not function somehow
Hope oxygen will fill me completely
Before carbon dioxide will be mine totally
As I walk in the lonely road above the mountains
It is sad to see land mine of gold and copper be broken
This shows how the environment suffered much everyday
Hope my home will be back with me again like a brand-new day
My body is already in pained and drained
With essential elements from water made up of hydrogen and oxygen
I want to quench my thirst soon
To fast track, the lost element which is my Home.

Ask the students: What are the elements and compounds stated in the poem?

Elements: Compounds:

ANALYSIS
Introduce to the class the Periodic Table of Elements.

Discuss the characteristics of elements and compounds using the Venn diagram.

Element Compou
s nds
- combination of two or more
elements
- Simplest form of matter
- two or more atoms
- One atom
- can be broken down
- Cannot be broken down into
components
Pure - into its components through
a chemical process
- Each element is unique and Substan - has unique properties that
no two elements have the
same set of properties ce are different from the
properties of the
- elements that make them up.

Give examples of elements and compounds:

1. Hydrogen (H)
2. Oxygen (O)
3. Water (H2O) = 2 hydrogens (H) + O (oxygen)
4. Sodium (Na)
5. Chlorine (Cl)
6. Salt (NaCl) = Sodium (Na) + Chlorine (Cl)

ABSTRACTION
Ask the class the following questions:
1. What are the two types of pure substances?
2. What are the differences between elements and compounds?
3. Can you an example of an element? How about a compound?

APPLICATION
Divide the class into 2 groups and have them perform the activity:
(Materials – printed words, scotch tape)

This time, you will be engaged and have your immersion as a garbage collector. Inside the garbage
bin are words need to be thrown at the dump site. As a garbage collector you need to save the
following words that describes and shows relationship with elements and compounds. Segregate
them by removing them from the garbage bin and place them on their respective boxes.

Element
Salt Air s
Oxygen
One atom Green
Two or Gold Compou
more nds
atoms H2O

Red hydrogen

IV. EVALUATION
Direction: Identify if the following substances are elements or compounds.
1. Silver
2. Nitrogen Oxide
3. Gold
4. Aluminum
5. Lead Sulfate

V. ASSIGNMENT
Using your periodic table of elements, find the elements the following compounds are composed of
1. CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)
2. H2O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide)
3. CaCO3 (Chalk)
4. SiO2 (Sand)
