Lesson
Linear Equations in
1 Two Variables

What’s In

Recall the translation of a verbal sentence to an equation. For example,

translate the verbal sentence: “The difference of two numbers is 8.” to an equation.

The term “difference” means the answer of the subtraction. The two numbers
can be represented by two variables, say x and y. Thus, the correct mathematical
equation is x – y = 8.

In the next section, you will find out what kind of equation is the example
above.

What’s New

Linear equations in two variables is an equation that can be written in the

standard form Ax + By = C where A, B and C are real numbers but A and B cannot
both be zero.

The equation, x – y = 8, is an example of a linear equation in two variables

because it is expressed in the form Ax + By = C where A = 1, B = –1 and C = 8.
Likewise, the exponent of the variables x and y are both equal to 1, which define a
linear equation in two variables.

Activity 1: Is That Me!

This activity will help you understand whether an equation can be written in
standard form Ax + By = C.

For example, 5x – 9y + 8 = 0 is a linear equation in two variables. It can be

written Ax + By = C as 5x – 9y = – 8.

Instruction: Put a check mark on yes if it can be written as Ax + By = C and no if

cannot be written.
Equation Yes No
1. 4x = 9y
2. 2x – y – 8 =0
3. 8x + 4y = 3x – 6

7
What Is It

Determine whether or not each equation illustrates a linear equation in two

variables. If so, identify the values of A, B and C.

Illustrative example 1: 5x = 10 + 3y
Solution: Express the equation into standard form Ax + By = C

5x = 10 + 3y
Since 5x = 10 + 3y can be expressed into the
5x – 3y = 10 + 3y – 3y
form Ax + By = C as 5x – 3y = 10, therefore it is
5x – 3y = 10
a linear equation in two variable where, A = 5, B
= – 3, and C = 10.

Illustrative example 2: y = 4x + 9
Solution: Expressed the equation into standard form Ax + By = C

y = 4x + 9
Since y = 4x + 9 can be expressed into Ax + By
y – 4x = 4x + 9 – 4x
= C, 4x – y = – 9, therefore it is a linear equation
– 4x + y = 9
in two variable where, A = 4, B = – 1 and C = –
(– 1)(– 4x + y) = (9)(– 1)
9.
4x – y = – 9

Illustrative example 3: 3x2 – y = 9

This is not a linear equation because the exponent of x is

3
Illustrative example 4: + 𝑦 = 20
𝑥
This is not a linear equation because a variable appears in the denominator of a
fraction.

Illustrative example 5: xy = 15

This is not a linear equation because the two variables are part of the same term.
What’s More

Activity 2: Complete Me!

Illustrate that the following are linear equations in two variables by fillip up the table
below given number 1 as an example.
Express in Is it a Linear equation
A, B, C ∈ ℝ and
Equation standard form in two variables?
𝐴 ≠ 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 ≠ 0
Ax + By = C Yes No
y = 4x + 6
A = 4, B = – 1
y = 4x + 6 – 4x + y = 6 ✔
and C = – 6.
4x – y = – 6

x=4–y

x=y
