Recit Guide April 15 2019

1) The Unit 3 Long Quiz for MATH 28 F will be held on April 23, 2019 during the recitation class. 2) For this week's recitation class, teachers should facilitate seatwork on applications of partial derivatives including relative extrema, Lagrange optimization, approximation by total differential, and related rates. At least one problem from each application should be discussed. 3) Examples of problems are provided for each application area, including the answers/formulations.

Recitation Class Guide April 15, 2019

Hello Recit Teachers!

The Unit 3 Long Quiz will be on April 23, 2019 during the recitation class.
For this week’s recitation class, FACILITATE the seatwork on the applications of partial
derivatives, particularly on relative extrema, Lagrange optimization, approximation by total
differential, and related rates. Choose at least one problem to discuss from each application.
For the other items, you may provide the formulation only.
I. On relative extrema
1 64
1. Consider the function defined by f (x, y) = − + xy. Determine the relative
x y
extreme value/s
( of f and the saddle point/s on the surface of f , if there are any.
fy (x, y) = y642 + x = 0
Answer: ⇒ critical point: (-1/4, 16)
fx (x, y) = − x12 + y = 0
Moreover, D(−1/4, 16) = fxx fyy − (fxy )2 = 3 > 0. Therefore, f has a relative
minimum value of −12 at the point (−1/4, 16).
II. On Lagrange optimization
2. Find the point on the plane 2x + y − z − 5 = 0 closest to the origin.
Answer: The folmulation is as follows:
Min x2 + y 2 + z 2 subject to 2x + y − z − 5 = 0
The point on the plane 2x + y − z − 5 = 0 closest to the origin is 35 , 56 , − 65 .

3. The Cobb-Douglas equation is one of the models of production based on the labor
input and capital input. Suppose that the Cobb-Douglas model of a company’s
production P is given by

P (x, y) = 100x3/4 y 1/4 ,

where x represents the number of units of labor and y represents the number of
units of capital. Each labor unit costs 15 and each capital unit costs 20. Find
the maximum production level if the total expense for labor and capital is 1600.
Answer: Formulation: Max 100x3/4 y 1/4√such that 15x + 20y = 1600
The maximum production level is 4000 2 and this is attained when x = 80 and
y = 20.
4. Find the dimensions of the closed right circular cylindrical can of smallest surface
area whose volume is 16π cubic centimeters.
Answer: Formulation: Min 2πrh + 2πr2 subject to πr2 h = 16π
The minimum surface area is 24πcm2 and this is attained when the radius of the
cylinder is 2 cm and the height is 4 cm.
III. On Total Differential and Chain Rule
5. A closed metal container in the shape of a right circular cylinder has an inside
height of 6 inches, an inside radius of 2 in, and a thickness of 0.1 inch. Approx-
imate by differentials the volume of the material used in the manufacturing of
the container.
Answer: Note that the volume of a right circular cylinder is computed by
V = πr2 h. We compute for dV with dr = 0.1 and dh = 0.2.
Hence, the approximate volume of the material used in the manufacturing of the
container is 3.2π.
6. The ideal gas law for a certain confined gas is given by P V = 0.05T where P , V ,
and T are the pressure (in atm), volume (in liters), and absolute temperature (in
Kelvin), respectively. Suppose that the temperature is increasing at the rate of
2 K per minute and the pressure is decreasing at the rate of 0.2 atm per minute.
Find the rate at which the volume is changing at the instant when the tempera-
ture is 60 K and the pressure is 12 atm.
dV
Answer: Find when T = 60 and P = 12.
dt
0.05T dV ∂V dT ∂V dP 0.05 dT −0.05T dP
V = ⇒ = + = + = 1/80.
P dt ∂T dt ∂P dt P dt P 2 dt
Hence, the volume is increasing at the rate of 1/80 L per min at the instant when
the temperature is 60 K and the pressure is 12 atm.
