Some people are not cut out to lead. It’s something that not everyone can do, or
do well. You can learn how to become a good leader, but it takes a lot of time. Some
people are thrown into leadership with little to no training on how to do it properly. Not
every leader is a good leader. Some people are just not cut out for leadership. Prime
examples of this include the pigs in Animal Farm, the popular satirical piece The Plumb
Pudding in Danger, and some of the strong leaders in the popular novel Ready Player
One. Not everyone is cut out to be a leader, fact and fiction have a tendency to prove
that.
My first point is that the pigs in Animal Farm aren’t just bad leaders, they are also
bad morally. They are constantly changing the rules to benefit themselves. “Once again
some of the animals heard this with certain bewilderment, but Squealer was soon able
to convince them that that their memories were at fault” (Orwell, George) If the rule
change is brought up to them, they gaslight their citizens into thinking it was always that
way. This causes some of the animals to lose respect for the pigs. The tricky tactics the
pigs use are rude and show disrespect for their animal citizens. Another example of
poor leadership from the pigs is how often they make their citizens work. The other
animals work from dawn until dusk, every day of the week, just to please the pigs. What
does all this hard work get them in return? Meals that might as well be scraps, and the
worst possible sleeping conditions. This is just because of how greedy the pigs are. The
pigs sleep in the Jones’s old house, with heat, good food, and comfortable beds. The

pigs always eat good, hearty meals, and drink a lot of alcohol. The pigs are really
greedy, just like the world leaders when The Plumb Pudding In Danger was made.
The historical satirical artwork, titled The Plumb Pudding In Danger, satrises that
some leaders are greedy. The artwork shows a British redcoat and Napoleon Bonaparte
slicing into plumb pudding, which just so happens to look like earth. (Gillray, James)
This was made in a time when the British, French, and the Americans were dividing the
world’s land amongst themselves. The redcoat is taking a much larger piece than
Napoleon, which says something about how much land the British tried taking. These
leaders were not as great as they were made out to be, especially since they were
really greedy. The biggest problem was these bad leaders had too much land to control.
If you have too much land, it can get to be too much to take care of. This can become
too much for anyone to handle. With too much land and not enough power, or people in
power to help you, your kingdom will not succeed. Your kingdom will develop too many
problems, and the people might revolt. This leads me to my final point.
My third and final reference is the popular science fiction novel Ready Player
One written by Earnest Cline. This novel takes place on planet earth in the year 2045,
and the quality of living is absolute garbage. “At first, I couldn’t understand why the
media was making such a big deal of the billionaire’s death. After all, the people of
Planet Earth had other concerns. The ongoing energy crisis. Catastrophic climate
change.Widespread famine, poverty, and disease. Half a dozen wars. You know: ‘dogs
and cats living together… mass hysteria!’” (Cline, Earnest) After this passage, the novel
Kirker 3
goes on to say, “Like the outbreak of some new killer virus, or another city vanishing in a
mushroom cloud. Big stuff like that.” (Cline, Earnest) Clearly the leaders of this time
weren’t doing a very good job at keeping things under control anymore. People’s quality
of life is going down the drain, hence the popularity of the novel’s fictitious video game,
the ironically named OASIS. The world is so bad, that the people living in it need an
escape from it. The worst part is that the book’s narrator, Wade Watts, says all the
things in such a relaxed manner, proving that this stuff is normal in his day and age.
There are many reasons that people are not cut out to be leaders. There are
people out in the world that are greedy, morally wrong, and not smart enough to lead.
People from history, and different works of literature prove that. Even in satirical works,
there are leaders who don’t do a good job at leading. Like any other form of fictional
writing, satire always has a little bit of bias to it. Not everyone is intended to lead, and
that’s okay. If you know that you can’t lead well, then learn how to! Try to make things
equal for everyone, don’t just make life easier for you. Not everyone is cut out for
leadership.
