DRIVING QUESTION
Presumably, anything can happen in the future, but once it happens, the set of
possibilities fall to one. In other words, the 'one' set of circumstances that
happened. Then 'it' becomes the past. Each and every one of us have a past we
wish we could change or a future that we wish we knew. With the advancement of
technology, many fantasies were given scientific explanation. When regrets turned
into curiosity, this question came forward: "what if time travel was possible?" In
this project, we strive to explore the possibility, the 'what if's' and what compelled
the world to wonder about time travel.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Through this project, I and my teammates attempt to delve into the possibilities
spiraling around the concept of time travel. We will explore bizarre historic
accounts that lend credibility to the theory of time travel. By doing so, we strive to
make the informative aspect of this project plentiful.

REPORT
The Third Level by Jack Finney

“The Third Level” is a short story written by Jack Finney that revolves around the
concept of time travel. Set in the bustling Grand Central Terminal in New York City,
the story follows a man named Charley who discovers a hidden “third level” within
the station—a level that appears to exist in the year 1894.

In the story, the third level serves as a portal to the past, allowing Charley to
escape the stress and anxieties of his contemporary life by immersing himself in
the simpler and more nostalgic world of the late 19th century. Charley finds solace
in the past, where he interacts with people from that era, experiences the charm
of a bygone time, and even considers the possibility of permanently living in that
simpler world.
“The Third Level” explores the theme of escapism through time travel, highlighting
the allure of a different time period as a means of coping with the challenges of
the present. The story raises questions about the nature of reality, perception, and
the human longing for a better or simpler life. It captures the imagination of
readers by blending the ordinary with the extraordinary, all within the confines of
a bustling train station.
In the context of “The Third Level,” time travel becomes a metaphorical journey
that reflects the human desire to escape the complexities of the modern world
and seek refuge in the past. It also underscores the enduring fascination with the
concept of time travel, which allows us to explore different eras, experience
historical moments, and ponder the possibilities of alternate realities.
The Third Level” also delves into the theme of the human perception of reality.
Charley’s wife, Louisa, believes that the third level is merely a figment of Charley’s
imagination, a result of his desire to escape his problems. This skepticism raises
questions about the nature of reality and challenges the reader to consider
whether the third level truly exists or is a manifestation of Charley’s psychological
needs.
The story’s exploration of time travel also raises questions about the
consequences of altering the past. Charley contemplates the idea of staying in the
past permanently, imagining a life free from the burdens of the present. However,
this contemplation introduces the concept of disrupting the course of history,
leading to potential paradoxes and unintended consequences.
Time travel still remains a captivating concept that has and will keep on fascinating
humanity for generations.
CASE STUDY of Some alleged Time Travelling Instances
Through out history there has been instances of time travel, whether it be an
urban legend, a fact or a myth.
A few of the alleged time travel incidents are:
Present-day hipster at 1941 bridge opening
A photograph from 1941 of genuine
authenticity of the re-opening of the
South Fork Bridge in Gold Bridge,
British Columbia is sometimes alleged
on the internet to show a time traveler.
It was claimed that his clothing and
sunglasses were of the present day and
not of the styles worn in the '40s, while
his camera was anachronistically small.
Later, after further research, it was
suggested that the present-day
appearance of the man would not have
necessarily been out of place in 1941.
The "Time Traveling Hipster" became a case study in viral Internet phenomena
which was presented at the Museums and the Web 2011 conference in
Philadelphia.

The story of Rudolph Fentz

It is an urban legend from the early 1950s and has been repeated since as a
reproduction of facts and presented as evidence for the existence of time travel.
The essence of the legend is that in New York City in 1951 a man wearing 19th-
century clothes was hit by a car. The subsequent investigation revealed that the
man had disappeared without a trace in 1876. The items in his possession
suggested that the man had traveled through time from 1876 to 1951 directly.

Famous Movies And Books Representing Time Travel

Both books and movies have embraced the concept of time travel, seamlessly
weaving it into their narratives. This imaginative motif transcends eras, allowing
characters to journey through time, unraveling the fabric of history and exploring
the boundless possibilities of the past, present, and future.

1.Back To The Future (1985)

A young man is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling
DeLorean invented by his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown, and must make sure his high-
school-age parents unite in order to save his own existence.

“Wait A Minute, Doc. Are You Telling Me

You Built A Time Machine... Out Of A
DeLorean?”
-Line From The Movie
2.The Adam Project (2022)
The story is centred on a man, fighter pilot Adam Reed, who travels back in
time and accidentally lands in the wrong year. He runs into his 12-year-old
self and the two team for a mission to save the future.

“Mankind has no business tampering with the

mechanics of the universe.”
-Line From The Movie
3.Before The Coffee Gets Cold (Book By Toshikazu Kawaguchi)
Kawaguchi sets up the idea of time traveling in an underground coffee shop,
where only one person can sit in a specific chair at a specific time. Once in another
time, the timer traveler has to drink a cup of coffee before it gets cold, hence the
book's title. The story originally began as a play, before being adapted into a novel
in 2015.The novel was then translated into English In 2019, a sequel was released:
Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Tales from the Café, and a second sequel Before Your
Memory Fades
The story uses the familiar techniques of magic realism to introduce interesting
characters and heart into the literary trope of time travel.

Toshikazu Kawaguchi's beautiful, moving story

explores the age-old question: what would you
change if you could travel back in time?

GROUP REFLECTION
The individual commitment to a group effort is what has made the completion of
this project possible. In the beginning, working as a group could not have been
more tedious. Heated arguments, escalating banters and stubborn disagreements
resulted in the frequent switch-ups of each of our individual roles. This experience,
however, enabled us to find the perfect place for each one of us to work on our
fortes. We were able to successfully compile this project as a team because we
learned to accept contradictory viewpoints. This project helped us to imbibe the
core values of working together which set the foundation for developing respect
towards other point of views, opinions, perspectives and individuals. Time travel
will continue to be a source of intrigue for each one of us. We are thankful for
being provided with the opportunity to explore this topic and to share our theories
upon the same.
