Writers should always be aware of the tone that they are creating. Good writers are constantly
considering the tone that they want to create and make decisions in their writing to ensure that they are
in control of it.
The tone of a piece of writing can be: formal, informal, serious, comic, sarcastic, sad, or cheerful, or it
may be any other existing attitude.

Episode 2: Reading Comprehension
Read the following news article and answer the questions below.
BUNNELL, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man is back in jail for impersonating a law enforcement officer
just days after he was arrested for the exact same charge, sheriff’s officials said.
LeRoy Stotelmyer, 60, was arrested March 11 after investigators got a tip from a toll bridge
attendant who showed them video of the man flashing a law enforcement badge twice on
March 11 to avoid paying a $2 toll, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

A toll booth attendant told investigators that Stotelmyer flashed the silver badge at him, and
he in turn showed the man an article about his arrest for impersonating an officer. He said
Stotelmyer then put away the badge and paid the toll.
Sheriff Rick Staly said Stotelmyer was arrested March 9 on charges of impersonating an officer
and shoplifting. On March 11 he was charged with felony violation of pre-trial release and
impersonating an officer. He was being held without bond.
“This guy clearly has not learned his lesson and has no respect for the law,” Sheriff Rick Staly
said. “Two days after his release and he is already up to his old tricks. We know already that
he thinks he can get out of shoplifting and paying tolls with his fake badge. Jail records didn’t
list a lawyer for Stotelmyer.

Episode 3: Writing
Yesterday, you wrote more body paragraphs of your newspaper article. If you have not yet completed
them, take a few minutes now to finish up or make corrections.
Now, exchange your writing with the student beside you and read each other’s paragraphs. Evaluate if
they have all the requirements that we discussed yesterday:
Peer Review:
Is the writing missing any of the requirements? If yes, state what it is missing.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
What do you think the writing did well at? Write at least one specific thing.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
What do you think the writing could improve on? Was there anything missing that could elevate the
writing?

_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
After you are done, give the letter back to the student beside you along with the feedback that you have
written. Make sure to read their feedback and incorporate those changes into your writing if necessary!

Newspaper Article
Headline – short,
Conclusion/concluding paragraph:
Unlike many other concluding paragraphs, in a newspaper article, you do not have to provide a
summary of all the events and information you provided earlier. Often, the ending of a newspaper
article can seem quite blunt. This is the result of the writer coming to the end of what they needed to
inform the readers of.
Depending on what the newspaper article has talked about and the style of writing you have chosen to
write in, the final paragraph of a newspaper article will be a reflection of that and will fit the overall
tone.
This table gives you a suggestion for a number of ways (some that are quite similar to one another) to
conclude your newspaper article.

Re-state the Main Point Simply repeat your main point with slightly different words. It may not
seem very creative, but it's logical and it works.
Summarize Succinctly Instead of focusing on the main point, you could wrap up with a quick
revisit of your document's body text.
Issue a Challenge Invite them to prove or disprove your point, or to think about the
information you presented in a new and innovative way.
Point to the Future It mentally places your reader in the future while keeping your article in
mind. This makes it more likely the reader will use your information or
revisit your publication.
Make a New Connection This connects your article to the bigger picture.
End with a Quote This could be from a source close to the event, or a well-known saying that
fits with what you are trying to say
Present a Solution If your article focuses on a problem, use your conclusion to point the
reader to a good solution. It works well for political and sociological pieces.
Get Rhetorical Ask a rhetorical question.

Look at the box below – it contains the final paragraph of one of the articles you have read previously.
Mr. Morris hopes that Kaikaia gaga will spark more interest in treehoppers, and insects
in general. He thinks their appearance makes them perfect to act as “spokesbugs”,
reminding people to protect the forests and natural areas that insects depend on.
The conclusion highlights the researcher’s personal feelings and hopes for the future.
Is it a good conclusion?
Yes, as it ends the article on a positive hopeful note, which is in line with the tone of happiness and
curiosity that is established throughout the article. The writer has used a play on words to try and make
the readers laugh through the word association, and in doing so, has used good diction to make us feel
like the researcher feels – content and hopeful.
Yes, though the reader may feel inspired to continue reading about the same topic.
