INTRODUCTION
MULTILINGUALISM IN SOCIETY
Multilingualism in society refers to the coexistence and use of multiple languages by
individuals and communities within a particular social context. It goes beyond simply having
individuals who are proficient in more than one language; it involves the active use and
acceptance of multiple languages within different spheres of society.
1. Cultural preservation and identity: Multilingualism allows for the preservation and
transmission of diverse languages and cultures within a society. It allows individuals to
connect with their cultural heritage and maintain their linguistic identity.
2. Social cohesion: Multilingualism can foster social cohesion by promoting
understanding and respect among different linguistic and cultural groups.
MONOLINGUALISM
-It refers to a person who has the ability to use a single Language.
BILINGUALISM
-Is the ability of an individual or the members of a Community to use two languages
effectively.
TRILINGUALISM
-Someone who can speak or understand three Languages, especially with some level of
fluency.
MULTILINGUALISM
-A person who is capable of speaking different Languages.
MULTILINGUAL BEHAVIOR
1. Code-switching – is a common behavior of people who Live in multilingual societies.
Code-switching refers to the process of mixing languages in speech.
2. Borrowing-refers to the use of individual words originating from another language.
BENEFITS OF MULTILINGUALISM
There are numerous benefits of multilingualism, including:

-Multilingualism is the ability to speak multiple languages. More than half of the population of
the world is able to speak at least two languages, with some speaking three, four, or even
more. Not all people who speak multiple languages are equally comfortable in all of them,
though some cultures emphasize Multilingualism more than others. People who can speak
only one language are considered monolingual. An individual’s native Language, spoken at
home or in one’s home country, is called a Mother tongue.
