LESSON 1: UNDERSTANDING MULTILINGUALISM

INTRODUCTION

According to the MERRIAM WEBSTER DICTIONARY, “multilingual” is an adjective meaning


“of, having, or expressed in several Languages”.
► For example, a multilingual dictionary is a dictionary that makes use of several languages.
A multilingual sign has several languages written on it.
• speaks and understand three or more language

Importance of understanding Multilingualism

✓Learning a new language expands our minds and worldview.


✓It opens you up to new cultures and to the fruits of diversity.
✓Speaking a second or third language will boost confidence and self-esteem.

MULTILINGUALISM IN SOCIETY
Multilingualism in society refers to the coexistence and use of multiple languages by
individuals and communities within a particular social context. It goes beyond simply having
individuals who are proficient in more than one language; it involves the active use and
acceptance of multiple languages within different spheres of society.

Multilingualism in society can have several implications:

1. Cultural preservation and identity: Multilingualism allows for the preservation and
transmission of diverse languages and cultures within a society. It allows individuals to
connect with their cultural heritage and maintain their linguistic identity.
2. Social cohesion: Multilingualism can foster social cohesion by promoting
understanding and respect among different linguistic and cultural groups.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF MULTILINGUALISM?


•Monolingulism (1 language)
•Bilingualism (2 languages)
•Trilingualism (3 languages)
•Multilingualism (4 or more Languages)

MONOLINGUALISM
-It refers to a person who has the ability to use a single Language.
BILINGUALISM
-Is the ability of an individual or the members of a Community to use two languages
effectively.
TRILINGUALISM
-Someone who can speak or understand three Languages, especially with some level of
fluency.
MULTILINGUALISM
-A person who is capable of speaking different Languages.

MULTILINGUAL BEHAVIOR
1. Code-switching – is a common behavior of people who Live in multilingual societies.
Code-switching refers to the process of mixing languages in speech.
2. Borrowing-refers to the use of individual words originating from another language.
BENEFITS OF MULTILINGUALISM
There are numerous benefits of multilingualism, including:

1. Improved cognitive abilities: Being multilingual can enhance problem-solving skills,


memory, attention, and multitasking abilities. It can also delay the onset of age-related
cognitive decline.
2. Expanded employment opportunities: Multilingual individuals have an advantage in
the job market, as they can communicate with a wider range of clients, customers, and
colleagues. This can open up more career opportunities and increase earning potential.
3. Better cultural understanding: Learning multiple languages enables individuals to
understand different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. It promotes empathy and
fosters appreciation for diversity, leading to more inclusive and global-minded
societies.
4. Enhanced communication skills: Multilingualism improves overall communication
skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It allows individuals to

LESSON SUMMARY
-Multilingualism is the ability to speak multiple languages. More than half of the population of
the world is able to speak at least two languages, with some speaking three, four, or even
more. Not all people who speak multiple languages are equally comfortable in all of them,
though some cultures emphasize Multilingualism more than others. People who can speak
only one language are considered monolingual. An individual’s native Language, spoken at
home or in one’s home country, is called a Mother tongue.
