Lesson 1.docx Grade 6

The document provides steps for adding and subtracting fractions, including changing dissimilar fractions to similar fractions by finding a common denominator, then adding or subtracting the numerators and keeping the denominator; when adding mixed numbers, the whole numbers and fractions are grouped and added separately, and when subtracting mixed numbers borrowing may be needed from the whole numbers. Examples are provided to demonstrate each step of adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.

Addition and Subtraction of

Lesson Simple Fractions and Mixed

1 Numbers
This lesson is designed and written with you in mind. This will help you think critically and solve
logically. After going through this lesson, students are expected to perform addition and subtraction of
simple fractions and mixed numbers without or with regrouping.

What I Know?
I. Circle the correct fraction from the given choices.

II. Write down the fraction that shows what part of each set is colored

What’s In?

When the news about the Novel Corona Virus came out,
Brgy. Sinalhan donated gallons of alcohol disinfect the Sinalhan
Elementary School and gallon to Sinalhan Integrated High School.
How many gallons of alcohol did the Brgy. Sinalhan donated in all?
How can we find out?

What’s the Point?

In adding and subtracting fractions, there are steps that we need to follow. But first we need to know
the different types of fractions.
1. Proper Fractions - are fractions which numerator is greater than its denominator.
Example: ,
2. Improper Fractions – are fractions which denominator is greater than its numerator.
Example: ,
3. Mixed Numbers – are fractions that have both whole number and proper fraction.
Example: ,
4. Similar or Like Fractions – are set of fractions that have the same denominator.
Example: , , ,
5. Dissimilar or Unlike Fractions – are fractions that have different denominator.
Example: , , ,

Steps in Adding and Subtracting Fractions

 To add and subtract similar fractions, you only have to add or subtract the numerator then copy the
denominator.
Examples:
1. (We add the numerators (4+3) and we got 7, then we copy the
denominator which is 8)

2. (We subtract the numerator (9-6) and we got 3, then we copy the
denominator.)

2
 To add and subtract dissimilar fractions
Addition Subtraction
Steps Example: Example:
 Change dissimilar fractions to
similar fractions (use the idea of
equivalent fractions).

 Add or subtract the fraction.

 Change the sum or difference to

lowest term or simplified form.

 To add mixed numbers:

 Group the whole numbers and the fractions separately.
 Change dissimilar fraction to similar fraction (use the idea of equivalent fractions)
 Add the whole number and the fraction separately.
 Add the whole number and the fraction to form mixed number.
 Change the sum to lowest term.

Example: Find the value of

Solution:

( ) ( ) Group the whole numbers and the fractions separately.

Change dissimilar fraction to similar fraction (use the

( ) ( )
idea of equivalent fractions)

( ) ( ) Add the whole numbers and the fraction separately

8+
Rename the improper fraction as mixed number =

Add the whole numbers and the fraction to form a mixed

number.

𝟏𝟑
Therefore, the sum is 𝟗 .
𝟏𝟖

 To subtract mixed numbers
 Group the whole numbers and the fractions separately.
 Change dissimilar fractions to similar fractions.
 Subtract the whole number and the fraction separately (borrow from whole number if needed).
 Add the whole number and the fraction to form mixed number.
 Change the difference to lowest term.

Example: Subtract .

Solution:
Group the whole numbers and the fractions separately
( ) ( )

( ) ( ) Change dissimilar fractions to similar fractions by

getting the LCD and changing the fractions to its
( ) ( ) equivalent

Subtract the whole number and the fraction

( ) separately (borrow from whole number if needed).
Since, The fraction needs to borrow a
( ) fraction equal to 1 from whole number to
perform subtraction, = =

Add the whole number and the fraction to form mixed

number. Change the difference to lowest term if possible

𝟕
Therefore, the difference is 𝟐 .

Activity
I. Match the following expression to its corresponding answer.

1.

2.

3. 1

4.

5.

II. Answer the following by performing the indicated operations.

1. What is the difference of and ?

2. What is the sum and ?

3. Evaluate: + - = ____

Keep in Mind!
LCD or least common denominator plays a very important role in adding and subtracting
dissimilar fraction or unlike fraction. In getting the LCD, we get the multiple of the given
denominators until both of them have the same multiple.
