Vocational scenario:
Retail Company:
AMBER Ltd is an independent retail organization that offers shipping and delivery services for
electronic products with four branches in the United Kingdom. They have contacted your
company – OpTech Consulting, an IT consultancy company based in the UK for a database
application to be developed for their operations in the UK.
The company headquarter is in the heart of London city with three other branches across the
country, including Birmingham, Manchester, and Leeds. They produce and deliver different
electronic products, and thus they would want the database development to include entities for
their products, customers, and transactions.
The company intends to have two types of customers - those that use the online shopping
option or shop onsite. Thus, the system will hold attributes like (Products ID, Products Name,
Product Price, Customer Name, Customer Address, Transaction ID, Transaction Name,
Payments Details, and a Customer ID as shown in the supermarket table below) generated
randomly for two categories of customers.
The manager of AMBER Ltd has a culture of monitoring monthly transactions and generating
a report from monthly orders and their total sale, so a query is expected to be generated for
this operation. The marketing team need to keep the list of all customers in alphabetical order,
with their email and telephone numbers to make the customers on the list aware of new
products, discounts, and other services.
In addition, the development must also include forms that users can use to interact with the
backend of the database. Thus, the system must be secure, robust, and scalable enough so
that the after-sales receipt reflects the location and time at which the product is purchased.
The system should have a full reporting menu that makes generating weekly stocktaking
possible. This will ensure stock control and make an order for replenishment by the branch
manager.

Unit 10: Database Design & Development - Assignment Brief
Assignment Brief
Your Role:
You are employed as a Junior Database Developer by OpTech Consulting. Your company
has accepted the contract to develop a database system for AMBER Ltd and provide the
necessary technology to run the system.
Your manager has asked you to obtain and use the system requirements to design, create and
implement the system. He has suggested using UML database notation for design and
Microsoft Access for implementation stages. Consequently, one of the contract requirements
is that user and technical documentation be made available to AMBER Ltd.
Section 1 (LO1): Use an appropriate design tool to design a relational database system.
You are to meet with the stakeholders at AMBER Ltd and the end-users to discuss the
description of the project requirements. The outcome of this meeting should provide you with
sufficient information to design and implement the database. Thus, the objectives of this task
are to:
• Design a relational database system using appropriate design tools and techniques,
containing at least four interrelated tables, with clear statements of user and system
requirements.
• Produce a comprehensive design for a fully functional system which includes interface
and output designs, data validations and data normalisation (Please refer to Table 1).
• Evaluate the effectiveness of the design in relation to user and system requirements.
Section 2 (LO2 & LO3): Develop a fully functional relational database system.
• Develop the database system with evidence of user interface, output and data
validations, and querying across multiple tables.
• Implement a query language into the relational database system.
• Implement a fully functional database system which includes system security and
database maintenance.

• Assess whether meaningful data has been extracted using query tools to produce
appropriate management information.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of the database solution in relation to user and system
requirements and suggest improvements.
Section 3 (LO3): Test the system against user and system requirements.
• Test the system against user and system requirements with all evidence screenshots.
• Assess the effectiveness of the testing, including an explanation of the choice of test
data used.
• Evaluate further the effectiveness of the database solution in relation to user and
system requirements and suggest improvements.

Academic integrity is a fundamental expectation for all college/university students, and while it is
acknowledged that mitigating circumstances might be raised as factors in student behaviour, cheating
cannot be disregarded. As contained in GBS Academic Good Practice and Academic Misconduct
Policy and Procedure, GBS's definition of plagiarism has been expanded to make explicit that copying
from texts or web sources and copying work from other students constitutes plagiarism.
"Plagiarism is taking or copying someone else's work, including another student's, and presenting it
as your own. Plagiarism is said to occur when ideas, texts, theories, data, created artistic artefacts or
other material are presented without acknowledgement so that the person considering this work is
given the impression that what they have before them is the student's original work when it is not.
Plagiarism also occurs when a student's work is re-presented without being properly referenced.
Plagiarism is a form of cheating and is a disciplinary offence."
Plagiarism is easy to avoid by making sure you reference all the sources of material you use to
complete your work. Pearson has developed Guidelines on Harvard Referencing, which are available
in the Academic Support Area for Students on Moodle (VLE) and on respective unit pages.
If you are concerned about referencing techniques, please draw the matter to your Unit Lecturer or
Academic Support Team at [email protected] so that you may receive extra
advice.
Group coursework may be designed so that each student's contribution is identifiable, but the
inclusion of plagiarized material is still the whole group's responsibility. All group members should
exercise vigilance to ensure that work is adequately referenced; students have a shared responsibility
for the assignment in group work.
