1ST QUARTER PE

Physical Fitness

Physical Fitness - is a set of abilities that one possesses in order to perform physical activities

Physical Activity - is any bodily movement produced by the contraction of skeletal muscles that results in a
substantial increase in energy expenditure

Exercise - Leisure-related PA that is planned, structured, and repetitive with a final goal of maintaining or
improving health and fitness

Fitness - A set of attributes that are either health- or skill-related

2 Major Components of Physical Fitness:

1. Health-related physical fitness (HRPF)

✓ It consists of those specific components that have a relationship with good health, or a lower risk of
illness, particularly hypokinetic diseases and conditions.
✓ It includes cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance and strength, flexibility and body
composition

1. FLEXIBILITY - is the ability of the joints and muscles to move through its full range of motion.
2. CARDIOVASCULAR ENDURANCE - is the ability of the heart, lungs and blood vessels to deliver oxygen to
working muscles and tissues, as well as the ability of those muscles and tissues to utilize the oxygen. Endurance
may also refer to the ability of the muscle to do repeated work without fatigue.
3.MUSCULAR STRENGTH – is the ability of the muscle to generate force against physical objects.
4. MUSCULAR ENDURANCE- is the ability of a muscle group to perform minimum resistance in a maximum
repetition or stabilized for a prolonged period of time.
5. BODY COMPOSITION - is the body’s relative amount of fat to fat-free mass.

HEALTH RELATED PHYSICAL FITNESS TESTS

1. Zipper Test - to test the flexibility of the shoulder girdle.
2. Sit-and-Reach - to test the flexibility of the lower back and extremities.
3. 3-Minute Step Test – to measure cardiovascular endurance
4. Push-up - to measure strength of upper extremities
5. Basic Plank - to measure strength/stability of the core muscles

2. Skill-related physical fitness (SRPF)

✓ It consists of components that have a relationship with learning motor skills quickly and the ability to
achieve a high level of performance in sports.
✓ It consists of agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time and speed.

1. SPEED– is the ability to perform a movement in one direction in the shortest period of time.
2. POWER – is the ability of the muscle to transfer energy and release maximum force at a fast rate.
3. AGILITY - is the ability to move in different directions quickly using a combination of balance, coordination,
speed, strength, and endurance.
4. REACTION TIME – The amount of time it takes to respond to a stimulus.
5. COORDINATION – The ability to use the senses with the body parts to perform motor tasks smoothly and
accurately.
6. BALANCE – is the maintenance of equilibrium while stationary or while moving.

SKILL – RELATED PHYSICAL FITNESS TESTS

1. 40-Meter Sprint - to measure running speed
2. Standing Long Jump - to measure the explosive strength and power of the leg muscles.
3. Hexagon Agility Test - to measure the ability of the body to move in different directions quickly.
4. Stick Drop Test - to measure the time to respond to a stimulus.
5. Juggling - to measure the coordination of the eye and hand
6. Stork Balance Stand Test - to assess one’s ability to maintain equilibrium.
Sports Officiating: First Aid (Cramps, Sprains, and Strains)
