The document presents the research proposal for a study exploring the motivations of senior high school (SHS) students in the Philippines for choosing the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) strand. The study aims to understand factors influencing students' decisions to pursue STEM and how they are motivated even when facing challenges. It will involve interviews and focus groups with STEM students at one SHS. The findings could help inform students' choices and improve STEM education programs. The proposal provides background on the purpose, objectives, research problem and questions to be addressed, scope, and significance of the study.

ANGEL: GOOD MORNING OUR BELOVED STUDENTS AND ESTEEMED
PANELLISTS. I AM MALLARI ANGEL

ANGEL: WE ARE HERE TODAY TO PRESENT OUR RESEARCH, ENTITLED
“Bright Minds, Big Aspirations“: Exploring the Motivation of SHS Students who Choose STEM
(Objective)
JAIRA: The purpose of this study is to explore the motivation
of SHS (Senior High School Students) in taking Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand; that can provide insights on their interests and aspirations towards STEM education and careers. Furthermore, this can also serve as a basis for improving the STEM education program and curriculum that can ultimately lead to a more competitive and skilled workforce in STEM-related fields.
ANGEL: This study aspires to explore how Grade 11 STEM
students at Porac Model Community High School determine their inspiration in taking STEM academic year 2022-2023. The study also seeks to understand how an individual faces their challenges and struggles of taking the STEM Strand.
(GENERAL PROBLEM)
RHOSE DEE: Esteemed panellists, the general problem of our
qualitative research study entitled "Exploring the Motivation of SHS Students in Taking STEM Strand" centres on understanding the motivational factors that drive students to choose the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand. The study will be conducted among grade 11 STEM students in the Senior High School Department of Porac Model Community High School during the school year 2022-2023.
By exploring their motivations, us, researchers seek to gain
insights into why students choose STEM, their aspirations, and their perceptions of the benefits and challenges associated with pursuing STEM.
Angel: The findings of this study have the potential to
provide valuable information and guidance for incoming Grade 11 students who are considering whether to pursue the STEM strand. The insights gained from the research can help these students make informed decisions about their educational and career paths, as they will have a better understanding of the motivations and experiences of current Grade 11 STEM students.
(SPECIFIC QUESTIONS)
MICHELLE: By determining the factors affecting the SHS
students to pursue STEM strand, we, the researchers will be able to know why they choose STEM out of the entire strand. Those factors could also be interrelated to their motivation. We will be able to know and explore how can their motivation will be able to motivate them in times of hardship in academics. Through it, we can achieve our objectives. The results of this study may stimulate the motivation of students to take Stem Strand.
(SCOPE AND DELIMITATION)
NICOLE: Good day, dear panellists. The scope and delimitations
of our research study entitled "Bright Minds, Big Aspirations: Exploring the Motivation of SHS Students who Choose STEM" are as follows:
NICOLE: Firstly, this study is focused on exploring the
motivation of Senior High School students in taking the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand. It aims to understand the factors that motivate them to choose this particular strand.
NICOLE: Secondly, the study will use qualitative research
methods that engage phenomenological as a research design. This approach will allow us to conduct in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and observations to gain a deeper understanding of the phenomenon under investigation.
NICOLE: Furthermore, the study is limited to a single high
school in the Philippines. Although the findings cannot be generalized to the entire SHS student population, the study's results can help provide insights into what motivates students in this particular school to choose the STEM strand.
LALAINE: It is worth noting that the study is not intended to
evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum or teaching strategies. Rather, it is a focused Examination of the motivation of SHS students to take the STEM strand.
LALAINE: Finally, the study is limited to the perspective of
the students, and the perceptions of the teachers or parents will not be included. This decision was made to provide a clear picture of the students' motivations and aspirations.
ANGEL: In conclusion, although there are some limitations to
this study, it promises to contribute to the field of STEM education by investigating the factors that drive SHS students' choice to pursue the STEM strand.
ANGEL: AT LAST, THAT’S THE END OF OUR PRESENTATION. AGAIN, I

Research gap:
The research gap of this study may include the lack of
previous research on the motivations of SHS students in taking the STEM strand. There may also be limited studies that specifically explore the challenges faced by SHS students in pursuing the STEM strand. Additionally, there may be a gap in understanding the role of school programs and support systems in influencing the decision of SHS students in taking the STEM strand. Review of Related Literature:
1. Factors influencing students’ choice of STEM majors:
Several studies have explored the factors that influence students' choice of STEM majors. According to Wang and Degol (2017), students' academic achievement, self-efficacy, and interest in STEM subjects are some of the factors that influence their decision to pursue STEM majors. Moreover, family influence, school experiences, and career prospects are other factors that have been found to have an impact on students' decision to take STEM majors (Byars-Winston et al., 2015).
2. Motivation and STEM education:
Self-determination theory (SDT) has been widely used in studying motivation in educational settings, including STEM education. SDT posits that motivation is driven by three basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness (Ryan and Deci, 2020). Students who have a high level of self- determined motivation are more likely to persist in their studies and achieve better academic outcomes. Therefore, several studies have identified autonomous motivation as a critical factor in students' academic success in STEM fields (Vansteenkiste et al., 2012; Orsini et al., 2016).
3. Challenges in STEM education:
STEM education has been found to be challenging due to several factors, including a lack of resources, inadequate teacher training, and students' negative attitudes towards STEM subjects (Becker, 2015). Moreover, the gender gap in STEM has been a long-standing challenge, with female students being underrepresented in STEM fields (National Science Board, 2018). Addressing these challenges is essential to promote equitable access to STEM education and careers.
Overall, previous research has provided important insights
into the factors that influence students' choice of, and motivation to pursue, STEM education. Building on this literature, the current study aims to shed light on the motivation of SHS students in taking the STEM strand, as well as the challenges they face. The findings can inform the development of interventions to improve the quality and effectiveness of STEM education programs in the Philippines. Wed 5:09 PM
