ACADEMIC/RESEARCH WRITING GUIDELINES FOR GRADUATE SCHOOL DUMMIES

Atty. Rolando A. Bernales, Ed.D.

Citation of Sources, Examples:

Ang pananaliksik ay pangangalap ng mga datos sa masinop at kontroladong

sitwasyon para sa layunin ng prediksyon at eksplanasyon (Trece, 1977).

Ayon kay Trece (1977), ang pananaliksik ay pangangalap ng mga datos… (Do NOT
overly use Ayon kay. Use other phrases , too.)

(Bernales’ work must be listed in the Bibliography. Without sa Bernales, et al., Halliday’s
work must be in the Bibliography.)

Ang isang plagyarista ay maaaring patawan ng kaparusahang naaayon sa polisiya ng

paaralan at/o sang-ayon sa Intellectual Property Law (Atienza, et al., 1996; sa Bernales,
et al., 2006). (Bernales’ work must be listed in the Bibliography. Without sa Bernales, et
al., Atienza’s will have to be in the Bibliography.)

Notes: Never plagiarize. Never misrepresent to have read/accessed a source that

you did not actually read/access. All cited sources must be listed in the Bibliography.
Italicize directly quoted/copied passages. Translated/paraphrased passages need not be
italicized, but source must be cited still.

Notes: Never use et al. in the Bibliography. Enumerate all the authors when there are
more than one. Uncited sources must NOT be listed in the Bibliography.

My Ten Commandments to Academic/Research Writing:

1. Check spelling: Shorter version preferred. Eg. KWENTO (NOT kuwento),

LINGGWISTIKA (not LINGGUWISTIKA); but avoid colloquialisms (eg: s’ya, du’n).
2. Never commit these idiotic spelling mistakes: NIYO (should be NINYO or N’YO),
SAYO (SA IYO/SA ‘YO), SAKIN (SA AKIN), KONA (KO NA), NALANG (NA LANG)
and other common mistakes committed by hopeless idiots like PARIN, NARIN,
NANAMAN, NALANG, NABA, PABA, KANA, PALANG (2 ingklitik), KABA
(panghalip at ingklitik), etc.
3. Avoid contractions, Eg. gayon din, NOT gayundin; alin man, NOT alinman, gayon
pa man, NOT gayonpaman.
4. Careful with DIN/RIN, DAW/RAW, DITO/RITO, DOON/ROON, also with the use of
Pang-angkop: NA/ -NG/-G.
5. ITALICS vs QUOTATION MARKS: Former (italics) Preferred. Do not use both.
6. Use capital letters and small letters correctly. Use punctuation marks correctly
also.
7. Use complete sentences always. Never use fragments (incomplete sentences).
8. Write academically, NOT literarily. Avoid clichés, idioms, and figures of speech.
9. Use third person pronouns, never the 1st person, nor the 2nd person.
10. Proofread. Edit. Revise. Then proofread again. Edit again. Revise again. Repeat
the cycle. Never submit mediocre works.
