1. Where is Notre-Dame Cathedral located?

The Notre-Dame Cathedral is in Paris, France.

2. Why this Gothic religious building plays such a vital role in European history?

This Gothic religious building plays such a vital role in European history because it
shows the technological advances and development of the area. It is sitting at the
center of many major roads leading to other large cities. It also influenced the
majority of Europe in style and included many of the master builders and sculptures.

3. Why is Notre Dame historically significant today?

Notre Dame is historically significant today because it is a standing piece of art that
gives the onlooker a view into the gothic age and the stories that are on its walls.

4. Who is the novel's author, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"?

The author of the novel, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is Victor Hugo.

5. Mention 10 facts about the stain glass, the rose windows and gargoyles mentioned on the video

The stained glass depicts scenes from the Old and New Testament.

A mixture of 2/3 ashes of beech wood and fern and 1/3 sand are brought to their
molten state then molded and blown to create the pieces of art.

The oldest rose window is the west one above the organ.

The west rose window is for the ages of man. It shows days, months, seasons, sins
and virtues.
The diameter of the west rose window is 9.6 m.

Most of the glass from the North rose window has been preserved intact and it is
mostly cool in color.

The south rose window has been changed significantly, is built around the number
12, and is mostly warm in color.

Most of the stained glass was destroyed in the 18th century except for the rose
windows. In 1855 the stained windows were remade.

The gargoyles were positioned at the end of gutters to get water off the roof and
away from the walls.

Most of the gargoyles are from the restoration in the 19th century.

6. What happened on April 15, 2019?

On April 15, 2019, the Notre Dame caught on fire.

7. Choose three original construction materials used to build the Cathedral and explain the challenges of
using these materials in present times.

Limestone, wood, and lead. With limestone, it can easily crumble and scratch and is
weathered easily. Which creates the need to examine it often. Wood is fire prone
and shrinks over time. Especially now with trees we have created to grow faster, the
wood can catch fire and spread easily and shrinking wood destabilizes tall structures.
Lead, to put it simply, can kill people.

8. Explain how the cutting-edge technologies will help to "digitally" re-build a virtual model of the Cathedral
Using the 3-d modeling software that drones now have they can build 3-d model of
what the cathedral looks like now then the computer soft ware can add in all of the
photos taken by tourists and others from the past at different angles to finish the 3-d
re-build.

9. Using the Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris destruction, what do we learn to manage and protect other
significant religious or cultural buildings around the world?

We can install a sprinkler system to stifle fires and increase the awareness and
regulations of workers to ensure that no sparks fly out of tools, and no one smokes
anywhere near the site.

10. In your own opinion, what are the challenges involved in preserving and maintaining cathedrals in present
days?

There is a constant debate on whether to install preventive measures or not. If

you install a sprinkler system, then it becomes modified and no longer has its
originality. But if you don’t then the whole thing can be destroyed by a fire. It
is more a moral issue than anything else. It is either preserve the antiquity and
take your chances or prepare for the worst-case scenario. I would prepare for
the worst-case scenario.
