Tutorials 3

This tutorial provides practice with descriptive statistics such as measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), dispersion, and relationships between variables. Students are asked to calculate these statistics for variables like number of siblings, years of education, and hours worked from sample data and interpret the results. They also estimate normal distributions and find covariance and correlation to analyze relationships between age and accidents from a provided data set.

Tutorial 3
This tutorial tests your understanding on descriptive statistics. From raw data, you should be able
to calculate arithmetic mean, median, and mode and aware of advantages and disadvantages of
each location measure. This also gives you experience to calculate measures of dispersion and
evaluate different distributions based on central and dispersed measures. You are also asked to
analyse the relationship between variables.

Question 1

Use the gss.sav data file. Compute descriptive statistics for the number of brothers and sisters
(variable sibs), years of education (educ), and hours worked last week (hrs1). Compute the
coefficient of skewness. Obtain histograms and boxplots for the variables as well. For each
variable:
a. Identify whether there is any outlier
b. Compare the values of the different measures of central tendency. Indicate why and when
you would prefer one measure over another.

Question 2

A set of data whose histogram is bell shaped yields a mean and standard deviation of 50 and 4,
respectively. Approximately what proportion of observations
a. are between 46 and 54?
b. are between 42 and 58?
c. are between 38 and 62?

Question 3

An auto insurance company reported the following information regarding the age of a driver and
the number of accidents reported in the Table bellows. Calculate the covariance and correlation
coefficient for the data and write a brief summary describing the relationship between two
variables.
