2023 EM 1 Part 1 Homework

This document contains instructions and 6 problems for an electromagnetic homework assignment. The instructions state that the homework is a take-home exam and collaboration is forbidden. Answers should include explanations and not just formulas. The 6 problems involve calculating electric field and potential values for various charge distributions, including a uniformly charged disc and spherically symmetric charge distributions.

Problem 1.
A vector field in mixed coordinate variables is given by
𝑥𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜙 2𝑦𝑧 𝑦
𝑮⃑ 𝒂𝒙 𝒂𝒚 1 𝒂𝒛
𝜌 𝜌 𝜌
Express 𝑮⃑ completely in the spherical system.

Problem 2.
A vector 𝐴⃑ 7𝑎 2𝑎 𝑎 at (0, 2, 0) and a vector 𝐵⃑ 𝑎 2𝑎 4𝑎 at
(1, 0, 0). Calculate the following values and express the answer in Cartesian
coordinate if the answer is a vector: (a) 2𝐴⃑ 3𝐵⃑, (b) 𝐴⃑ ⋅ 𝐵⃑, 𝑐 𝐴⃑ 𝐵⃑ , (d) the unit
vector normal to 𝐴⃑ and 𝐵⃑ , (e) the angle between 𝐴⃑ and 𝐵⃑ .
(Note the position coordinates (0, 2, 0) and (1, 0, 0) are given in rectangular
coordinates.)

Problem 3.
A uniform volume charge density 𝜌 exists in the region 𝑎 𝜌 𝑏, 0 𝜙
2𝜋, 0 𝑧 ℎ. Find the electric field 𝑬⃑ at the location (0, 0, 2h).

Problem 4.
Let a uniform surface charge density of 10 nC/m2 be present at z = 0 plane, a uniform
line charge density of 8 nC/m be located at x = 0, z = 4, and a point charge of 2 μC be
present at P(2, 0, 0). If V = 0 at M(0, 0, 5), find V at
N(1, 2, 3)

Problem 5.
Find the expression of the potential and electric
field at a point on the z axis of a uniformly charged
disc of radius a with surface charge density σs
(C/m2), as shown below. Take V(∞) = 0 V as a
reference point. (Hint: the answers for z > 0 and z <
0 region should both be considered.)
Problem 6.

(a) A spherically symmetric charge distribution has a charge density 𝜌 𝜌

(C/m3), where 𝑟 is measured in meters. Use Gauss’s law to determine 𝐸⃑ at any

point.

(b) If we measure an electric field 𝐸⃑ ln 𝑟 𝑎 (V/m), find the charge

distribution that generated this E-field.
