1 TERMINAL FUNCTION
This section describes Input/Output terminals of the repeater.

1.1 External Terminals Specifications

Connectors that are used for connecting external devices, etc. are available on the front panel and rear panel of the
repeater.

1.1.1 9-pin Serial Connector

The 9-pin serial connector (compatible with RS-232C) is located on the front panel of the repeater, hence the configuration
data can be written to or deleted from the repeater and the repeater adjustment can be done by connecting the repeater to
a PC with KPG-109D software installed.

We recommend you using the cable within 30 cm (12 inches) or shorter as possible to connect to the SYNC connector in
consideration of transmission delay. The SYNC cable must be made on your own using a straight cable and a four-pole
and four-core modular plug and cable for the handset.
Following are specifications of the SYNC cable to be used:

When connecting repeaters using the SYNC cable, they must be connected in cascade as illustrated in Connection
Example 1 and 2. Do not connect repeaters in a loop as illustrated in the Connection Example 3. If repeaters are
connected in a loop, the repeaters may not be able to synchronize properly.

4.1 OCXO (KXK-3) 4.1.3 Appearance

To operate the system using the Very Narrow channel

spacing, a highly accurate reference oscillator is
indispensable for the repeater. The repeater is
compatible with the OCXO (KXK-3) optional reference
oscillator. Installing the KXK-3 in the TX unit built in the
repeater enables the repeater to be operated in a
4800 bps NXDN system.

DO NOT IMPACT OR CAUSE THE KXK-3 TO VIBRATE

4.3 Reference Signal Distribution

To distribute a 10 MHz reference signal from a repeater equipped with the OCXO unit to other repeaters, every repeater
must be connected in parallel by cable.
The reference signal sourced from the REF OUT terminal on the repeater equipped with the OCXO unit can be relayed to
the REF IN terminal on the next repeater.
The connection method varies depending on the number of units to be connected. If the REF OUT terminal and REF IN
terminal are connected in cascade, a maximum of 11 repeaters can be connected in cascade. (Refer to 4.3.1 If Connecting
2 to 11 Repeaters on this page.) If the terminal is connected in parallel, a maximum of 10 repeaters can be connected in
order to distribute the reference REF OUT terminal to the REF IN terminals on other repeaters. (Refer to 4.3.2 If Connecting
12 to 30 Repeaters on page 19.)

• THE INPUT IMPEDANCE OF THE REF IN TERMINAL IS 1KΩ OR MORE. THE SENSITIVITY OF THE REF IN TERMINAL IS
APPROXIMATELY 0.6 VPP OR LESS. THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE INPUT AMPLITUDE LEVEL IS 5 VPP.
• A MAXIMUM OF 11 REPEATERS CAN BE CONNECTED IN CASCADE. IF MORE THAN 11 REPEATERS ARE CONNECTED
IN CASCADE, THE REFERENCE SIGNAL MAY NOT BE RELAYED PROPERLY.
• A MAXIMUM OF 10 REPEATERS CAN BE CONNECTED IN PARALLEL. IF MORE THAN 10 REPEATERS ARE CONNCTED IN
PARALELL, THE REFERENCE SIGNAL MAY NOT BE DISTRIBUTED PROPERLY.
• THE CHARACTERISTIC IMPEDANCE OF THE CABLE THAT IS USED FOR CONNECTING REPEATERS IS 50Ω. THE
LENGTH OF THE CABLE THAT IS USED FOR CONNECTING REPEATERS MUST BE AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE.
• IF REPEATERS ARE CONNECTED IN PARALLEL, THEY MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE REF IN TERMINAL USING A BNC
T-CONNECTOR. WE RECOMMEND YOU USE AN F-M-F BNC T-CONNECTOR HAVING AN IMPEDANCE OF 50Ω.
• THE 50Ω TERMINATOR MUST BE ABLE TO CONTINUOUSLY HANDLE A POWER OF APPROXIMATELY 100 MW.

4.3.1 If Connecting 2 to 11 Repeaters

6.3.29 OCXO Frequency

Outline
OCXO Frequency allows a service engineer to adjust the oscillation frequency of the OCXO.
We recommend you confirm and adjust the oscillation frequency during maintenance of the repeater.
Also, the frequency must be corrected about once a year. Correction and maintenance of the frequency must be done in a thermally
neutral environment.

REF_OUT
FINAL TX CONTROL RX

KXK-3

PC

Adjustment Procedure
1. Do the following preparations prior to the adjustment:
1) Ensure that the KXK-3 OCXO unit is installed in the repeater.
Refer to 4.1 OCXO (KXK-3) on page 16 for instructions on how to install the KXK-3 OCXO unit.
2) Turn the repeater ON, and then warm up the KXK-3 OCXO unit for more than 24 hours.
The ambient temperature must be stable when warming up the KXK-3 OCXO unit.
3) Verify that the frequency counter is warmed up and calibrated.
Refer to the manual supplied with the frequency counter for instructions on how to warm up and calibrate the frequency counter.
2. Double-click “OCXO Frequency” in the adjustment item list in the Test Mode dialog box.
3. Observe the value of REF_OUT on the TX PCB using the frequency counter.
4. Adjust the data until the frequency indicated on the frequency counter is between 9.99999850 MHz and 10.00000150 MHz.
5. Click the “Apply All” button.
Adjusted Value
9.99999850 MHz to 10.00000150 MHz (±0.15 ppm)
Remarks
The adjusted offset value is stored in internal memory in the KXK-3. Therefore, readjustment is not required if the adjusted KXK-3 is
removed and then installed in another NXR-700 or NXR-800.

6.3.30 OCXO Current

Outline
OCXO Current allows a service engineer to monitor the current consumption of the KXK-3 OCXO unit.
The current consumption, which is converted into the AD converter value, appears in Vin 1 in the Current Value information box.
The current consumption at the default factory setting and AD converter value appear in the Applied Value information box.

PC

Adjustment Procedure
1. Ensure that the KXK-3 OCXO unit is installed in the repeater.
Refer to 4.1 OCXO (KXK-3) on page 16 for instructions on how to install the KXK-3 OCXO unit.
2. Double-click “OCXO Current” in the adjustment item list in the Test Mode dialog box.
When the OCXO Current dialog box is open for the first time, the current consumption at the default factory setting of the KXK-3
OCXO unit and AD converter value appear in the Applied Value information box.
3. Monitor the current consumption of the KXK-3 OCXO unit in Vin 1 in the Current Value information box.
Adjusted Value
OCXO Current is used only to monitor the current consumption of the KXK-3 OCXO unit, hence the current cannot be adjusted using
this item.
Remarks
• The Vin 1 value temporarily increases if the temperature of the KXK-3 OCXO unit is low, hence monitor Vin 1 after the value becomes
stable.
• The consumption current of the KXK-3 OCXO unit may vary depending on the ambient temperature.
(The value in the Applied Value information box indicates the consumption current at normal temperature.)
