Text Book:
1. An introduction to Mechanics, Daniel Kleppner & Robert Kolenkow, second edition,
Cambridge University Press.
2. Vibrations and Waves, A.P. French, CBS Publishers.
Reference Books:
1. Berkeley Physics, Vol. I, Addison Wesley.
2. The Physics of waves and oscillations, N. K. Bajaj, Mcgraw-Hill education.

Course structure and Objective:

This course is basically divided into two segments. The first segment focusses on foundational
mechanics, primarily the physics of rotating bodies, central forces, orbits and vector nature of
angular momentum. The second segment deals with vibrations and waves. Here we will start with
free, damped and forced vibrations. Then we will move on to coupled oscillations and expanding
the case of N coupled oscillators where N is very large, we will introduce vibration of strings and
the Fourier series, and finally discuss the dynamics of wave motion. This course is designed for Ist

1
year undergraduate students with an aim to provide a strong foundation in wave mechanics and
rotational dynamics of rigid bodies.

Course delivery details:

There will be two 50 minutes lecture sessions at the LT4 classroom: either Monday/Wednesday
9.00-9.50 am for students of tutorial sections T1, T2 and T3 or Tuesday/Thursday 9.00-9.50 am for
students of tutorial sections T4, T5 and T6. Additionally, there will be two 50 minutes tutorial
sessions per week for each student. Therefore, in each week a student will do two lectures + two
tutorials. While lectures will discuss the theory of the subject matter, tutorials will emphasize on
problem solving and also cover certain concepts in detail. All course related materials and
announcements will be available at the MOW course webpage (PHY F111) in quanta.

Evaluation scheme:
