Brief Summary

The Midline Theorem

Theorem 5

parallel to the third side and half as long as the third side of the triangle.

H S

∆HNS has O as the midpoint of HN and E as the midpoint of NS. Is

OE| |HS? Yes, because based on the theorem 5, the segment that joins the
midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side. (Note: The sign
| | means ‘parallel to’)

Is OE = (1/2)HS? Yes, because based on the theorem 5, the segment

that joins the midpoints of two sides of a triangle is as half as long as the third
side of the triangle. That is the midline theorem that is needed to be
memorized regarding with the properties of rectangles.

Brief Summary:

The Midsegment Theorem of Trapezoid

Theorem 6
The median of a trapezoid is parallel to each base of the trapezoid
and its length is one half the sum of the lengths of the trapezoid’s bases.
Example:

Trapezoid MINS has a median TR. Is TR||IN and TR||MS? Yes,

because according to theorem 6, the median of a trapezoid is parallel to each
base of the trapezoid. IN and MS are the bases of the given trapezoid above.

Is TR = 1/2(MS + IN)? Yes, because according to theorem 6, The

median of a trapezoid is one half the sum of the lengths of the trapezoid’s
bases.
