Research involves systematic investigation to gain knowledge. It can involve using search engines to find information online or other methods like surveys, interviews, and observations. There are two main types of research: qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research uses words rather than numbers and explores topics through discussions, while quantitative research involves measurement and uses statistics and numbers to analyze variables. Quantitative research aims to test hypotheses, make predictions, and generalize findings to populations through large, randomized samples and structured data collection.

What is research?

The word research - and the act of doing research- is commonly associated with using the internet,
particularly Google or other search engines and websites, to find out information about a certain
topic.
Additionally: Using Google & other search engines found on the internet is just one of the various
means to gather data in order to complete a study. Learning to be proficient in using the internet to
search facts about a topic will definitely help you in your research.
Some definitions of research:

 It is a systematic search for truth.

 Through research, new and original information, ideas about the world we live in, are
obtained.
 Research is search for knowledge.
 Research is defined as a scientific and systematic search for information on a specific topic.
 Research is a careful and systematic study and inquiry in some field of knowledge.
 Research is an investigation of a certain phenomenon or results of previous studies to find out
their present relevance.
 Research means organized and systematic way of finding answers to the questions.
 Without a question, research has NO FOCUS, DRIVE OR PURPOSE.
Two kinds of Research
Qualitative - requires non-numerical data, which means that the research uses words rather than
numbers to express the results, the inquiry or investigation about people’s thoughts, beliefs, feelings,
views and lifestyles regarding the object of the study.
- Focuses on the things that are after discussions or for debate
- It is describing a lot of things
- Will use surveys, observations & interviews along with artifacts in an area (collecting data
from word or image)
- Look at language, religion, ethnicity
- Ask more questions that deal with what and how
- Explanatory
- One source to collect data (newspaper, journal, video, etc.)
- Final report is set into themes (describe and analyze words for themes)
- Ask broad, general questions
- Conduct inquiry in biased, subjective manner
Quantitative - involves measurement of data. Thus, it presents research findings referring to the
number or frequency of something in numerical forms (using percentages, fractions, numbers).
- Definitively prove something
- Loot at economic data, political description, population breakdown, age, gender
- Looking at variables
- Questions are focuses on what, how and does (collecting data from participants)
- Statistics/number
- Final report is on analysis portion, all the data & points that collected, then break it down to
see for statistical significance behind it (analyze numbers using statistics)
- Just showing the finding on what they found.
- Ask specific, narrow questions
- Conduct inquiry in unbiased, objective manner

Quantitative Research
- a systematic investigation of observable phenomena where the researcher gathers
quantitative or numerical data and subjects them to statistical data.
- The main goals of quantitative research are to test hypotheses, explore causal relationships,
make predictions, and generalize the findings within a population.
- Compared to qualitative research, quantitative research typically uses larger samples (or sets
of participants in the study) and primarily utilizes probability sampling.
Probability sampling - a type of sampling that is highly randomized.
- Quantitative research has lower level of subjectivity and;
- a higher rate of generalizability.
Generalizability - It refers to the extent to which the findings not only represent the
samples but also the population at large.
Characteristics of QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
 The data are usually gathered using a more structured instrument.
 The results are based on larger sample sizes that are representative of the population.
 The research study can usually be replicated or repeated, given its high reliability.
 The researcher has a clearly defined research question to which objective answers are sought.
 All aspects of the study are carefully designed before the data is collected.
 Data are in the form of numbers and statistics.
 The researcher uses tools such as questionnaires or computer software, to collect numerical
data.
