LANDSCAPES IN THE PHILIPPINES
Tubbataha Reef
Located at the center of Sulu, the Tubbataha reef is a natural heritage site. With an area of
100,000 hectares, it is home to 500 species of fish and 350 species of corals. It is also a favorite
spot for Christmas Island Frigatebird and sea birds.
Inscribed in 1993, the Natural Park is an uninhabited area. The lagoons, two coral islands, and the
pristine coral reef system with its perpendicular wall that measures 100 meters are all protected by
the government.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park

In 1999, Palawan’s Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park was inscribed as a natural
heritage site. It has a mountain-to-sea ecosystem and forest that is home to different faunas
and floras.
The 8.2 km underground river is filled with limestones and rock formations. Also known as one of
the “New Seven Wonders of Nature,” the place is a popular tourist attraction. Though open to
the public, the government ensures that it is well maintained, managed and preserved.
Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary
Towering high at 75 to 1,637m above sea level in Davao is the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife
Sanctuary. It is a home for different plants and animals including the endemic and endangered
species. Some notable residents of the place are Nepenthes, Philippine cockatoo, and the Philippine
Eagle.
The site is a recent addition to the World Heritage Sites which was only inscribed in 2014. Though
new in the list, most of the trees in the area are more than 100 years old. Also, eight unique
species can only be found in the sanctuary.

Filipino Artists

Fabian Dela Rosa

Born in Paco Manila on May 5, 1869, Fabian Cueto Dela Rosa is a natural-born artist. Even before
having formal art training, he already created masterpieces. Fabian was a well-celebrated painter
who can be compared with the greats Juan Luna and Felix Hidalgo. He held various exhibitions
here and abroad.

Fabian loved to paint portraits and landscapes of everyday scenes. There were commonly women
on them doing daily activities. Arguably, his most famous work is the “Planting Rice” which won a
gold medal in 1904 at Saint Louis Exposition.

Fernando Amorsolo
Known as the “Grand Old Man of Philippine Art,” Fernando Amorsolo is the very first National Artist
of the Philippines. Posthumously awarded, his family got his National Artist recognition from
President Ferdinand Marcos four days after his death. His unique technique and artistry made him
a “Master of Filipino Visual Arts.”

Carlos “Botong” Francisco

Another notable National Artist is Botong Francisco who was proclaimed in 1973. Raised in Angono,
Rizal, he was one of the modernist triumvirates who deviated from the style of the great Amorsolo.
Together with Edades and Ocampo, they brought new ideas in visual expression.

Carlos Francisco painted numerous murals and paintings. Among the most popular are the
“Kaingin” in 1948 which won first prize in national art exhibition of the Art Association of the
Philippines; the mural in the Bulwagang Katipunan of the Manila City Hall titled “Filipino Struggles
through History”; and the Life and Miracles of St Dominic at Santo Domingo Church in 1954.

Vicente Manansala
A prominent member of the thirteen modernists, National Artist Vicente Manansala, is a great
painter. Starting from designing kits when he was young, he studied at the University of the
Philippines School of Fine Arts. He also took courses in Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal, Canada
as well as the United States. The great Ferdinand Leger in France also mentored him.

Most of Manansala's artworks are figurative paintings. His subject was more on the postwar
experience in urban areas. He was not afraid to show the poverty in the Philippines on his works.
His artistry inspired artists such as Mauro Malang Santos, Antonio Austria, Mario Parial, Angelito
Antonio and Manuel BaIdemor.

 Executes the different skills involved in the game
 Displays joy of effort, respect for others and fair play during participation in physical
activities
EXPLORE

Physical Safety
A study reported in a grade school campus that during PE activities 7 out of 10 boys and 6 out of
10 girls might get injured during games and sporting activities. And because of this data, school
administration became more strict in implementing safety guidelines and safety precautions. At the
same time, they make sure not to decrease the quality of physical activities that a student could
experience.

General Guides for Game Safety:

1. At the beginning of every school year, each PE teacher should have a record and baseline data
of every student experiencing medical conditions like the following:
a. heart problems
b. epilepsy
c. asthma
d. allergies
e. diabetes
These illnesses can put the student’s health in danger if teachers are unaware. Students may still
participate in physical activities as properly advised by their physician with the guidance and
supervision of the adviser.
2. A fully stocked first aid kit should be always available around the event ground like gymnasium
or field along with a trained first aid provider.
3. Before teaching the skills for a certain physical activity, the teacher should provide information
about the risks (warning for the possibility of injuries), demonstrate ways on how to reduce the
risks, and provide proper guidelines for safe gameplay.
4. Information like fire exits and alternate routes in case of emergencies should be taught to
students.
5. In events where the venue is far from the school, the child’s parent or guardian should be
notified through a waiver or a letter that informs them about the nature of the event, the location,
and the duration. This document should be fully signed before allowing the student to participate.

Game Safety Specific Components

1. Guidelines
A certain standard rule to cover everything related to the event, whether game mechanics,
standard equipment and protocols. This is to make sure that every action and information about
the event has a reference that everyone can use and check when needed.
2. Equipment
a. During the events, all types of equipment like bats, nets, and clubs should be free from sharp
edges, cracks, and splinters.
b. Make sure that all ball is inflated properly.
c. Protective gear like gloves and helmets are part of the equipment as well. Make sure that it
follows a certain standard of quality to avoid accidents during game time.
d. Students can inform their teachers if they encounter any defects from any type of equipment.
3. Clothing and Footwear
a. Appropriate clothing and footwear should be practiced during PE sessions especially when there
is a game or sporting acting activity. Clothing should be cotton or sports shirt and sweatpants that
can keep the body cool or absorb the sweat.
b. For the footwear, rubber shoes with a flat sole are recommended to avoid ankle injuries, and
cotton socks should be used to avoid blisters and calluses.
c. Hanging jewelry should be removed during the game or activity. If the jewelry is for medical use
or part of a culture, some game modification is required.
d. Long hair should be secured to avoid blocking of vision while in a game.
e. Parents with children using eyeglasses should be informed to include straps to be secured.
4. Facilities
a. A day before every sports or game activity, the teacher must conduct an ocular visit to the
venue and make sure that it is free from potential hazards. A checklist can be used during the pre-
activity check.
b. Materials and types of equipment to be used need to be secured before the game to check for
damages or technical problems. It is to prevent equipment malfunction in the middle of the game
that may injure someone.
c. All equipment that is found defective should be removed away from the perimeter of the game
venue.
d. For indoor activities, mats and benches should be properly placed. Make sure to put proper lines
to identify the game field from the pathway.
e. The playing field must be free from hazards, whether movable or immovable, like rocks, holes,
and poles.
f. A supervising officer or a teacher should be present in the facility where the game is being held
together with the first aider.

5. Special Rules/Instructions
a. Sports and Games should be modified according to age and level of skills of students and the
facilities and pieces of equipment especially in playing a traditional game
b. To students who are physically challenged with limited mobility, a special modification should be
considered.
6. Supervision
a. All types of equipment should be properly supervised throughout the event to maintain its
quality and make sure that it's safe to use.
b. Students should remember that the use of a certain facility like a gymnasium or the track and
field should be supervised by the appropriate personnel.

Tips for Personal Safety:

● Start with a low-intensity exercise before starting a game. It will serve as a warm-up exercise.
● Perform a proper stretching routine. Prepare your muscles and joints before starting an activity.
● Secure appropriate clothing and footwear. Comfortable clothes and appropriate to the event will
help you move freely and keep you away from injuries.
● Keep yourself hydrated bring water or a sports drink. Drinking water and sports drinks will
replace your body fluids and electrolytes but remember not to drink too much.

INVASION GAMES
Invasion games are games played commonly by groups that aim to score a point by either
defending your own base or attacking the base of the opponent. There are different mechanics and
rules to be followed in different games.

Agawan Base is a game where two groups need to defend their own bases. Their way of scoring
a point is to tag the opponent’s base without being tagged by any of their members. Also, the main
objective of the game is to gain points by invading the opponent's base by penetrating to the area
or touching their base.

Equipment Needed:
1. Any markers (for base)
Health-Related and Skills-Related Fitness Required:
1. Speed
2. Reaction Time
3. Agility
How to Play:
● Each group will mark its own bases by at least 15 meters apart.
● Assign members to guard the base and the others to defend and attack the other base.
● Remember to step or touch your own base to confirm that you are home.
● The first player who steps out of their base is the target or can be tagged by the other group.
● If the other group is getting closer to the target, he/she must go back to their base to avoid
being tagged.
● Tag the opponent’s base to score a point.
Rules:
● The first group who gets 3 points win.
● You may rescue your groupmate who is imprisoned on the opponent’s base by tagging
him/her, and he/she may go back to your base.

Health-Related and Skills-Related Fitness Required:

1. Agility
2. Reaction Time
3. Speed
4. Cardiovascular Endurance
5. Coordination
6. Balance
How to Play:
● Assign a hawk and a hen. The rest of the players are chicks.
● The hen would be staying at the front of the line, and the other chicks will be at the
back.
● The hawk will choose a chick to capture to replace him from being the hawk.
● The chicks need to hold on to the waist of the one in front of them. Hold tight to
avoid breaking the line.
● The hen will have to spread his arms to protect the chick.
● The chicks would need to follow where the hen would go to avoid getting caught by
the hawk.
● If the chick is caught, he will be the new hawk.
Rules:
● The hawk would need to capture the chosen chick within 2 minutes.
● If the hawk failed to catch the chick in 2 minutes, he would need to choose a new one to
capture.

Equipment Needed:
1. Handkerchief
Health-Related and Skills-Related Fitness Required:
1. Speed
2. Reaction Time
3. Agility
How to Play:
● Each group will assign numbers to each player. (The number would depend on the number of
players only.)
● The referee will hold the handkerchief in the middle. The distance between the two groups must
be the same.
● Each group will form a straight line, facing their opponent.
● The referee will call a number, and the assigned player on the said number would need to get
the handkerchief.
● The player who wasn’t able to get the handkerchief may chase and tag the opponent to reset the
game.
● If the player who got the handkerchief return to their base without being tagged, their group will
score a point.
● The referee may call up to 3 numbers per round.
Rules:
● If the player holding the handkerchief is tagged, the score will go to the opponent’s
team who tagged the player.
● The first group who gets 5 points win.

Changes, Myths, and Misconceptions about Puberty
Causes of Emotional and Social Changes in Puberty
As a person undergoes physical maturity, the brain also changes in certain ways like the formation
of connections and the release of different hormones. These hormones and connections have a
tremendous impact on how emotions can form. Studies state that the parts of the brain that
influence emotions mature quicker.
Studies have also shown that the levels of hormones can also affect some parts of the brain. These
studies have found a relationship between how emotions are processed and the parts of the brain
that are usually activated.

Emotional and Social Changes

Among the many emotional and social changes that teenagers experience during puberty, some of
the most notable are the following:

Emotional Reactivity and Mood

Some teenagers tend to react more strongly to specific situations or to have more subtle changes
in mood. Scientists believe that this can be due to the effect that hormones may have, or the
continuing development that the brain is still undergoing. Mood changes and strong emotions are
normal during puberty. However, these emotions and moods can also affect how the teenager
relates to other people and society.

Responses to Stress
There are certain shifts in the brain that happen during adolescence and puberty, and these shifts
make the brain respond more strongly to stressful situations. A stressor refers to any factor or
event that causes stress.

Conformity and Acceptance

A teen is also more focused on the acceptance of friends and peers, even more, so that normal.
This is why many teenagers conform to what other people do, or how they behave. Conformity
refers to the behavior that aligns with what is socially being done or accepted by other people.

Building Relationships and Romantic Interests

Due to hormones, teenagers going through puberty are leaning towards building intimate
relationships to the opposite sex. Intimacy or being intimate refers to a bond with another person
that is close, emotional, and familiar.

The Menstrual Cycle and Mood

There is also a physical and scientific reason why girls experience changes in emotions and mood
associated with the menstrual cycle. Several hormones are being released during the cycle, and
these affect the feelings that a girl is more likely to experience.
The Menstrual Cycle
The menstrual cycle is a series of steps associated with the preparation that the female body
undergoes to release an egg cell, the process of release, and the changes that experience
afterward. The first menstrual cycle that a female will undergo is usually in puberty and is known
as the menarche.
Misconceptions About Menstruation
There are many false beliefs and myths about menstruation. Here are some misconceptions:
That menstrual blood has a naturally bad smell.
Menstrual blood is naturally odorless, and the smell should not normally permeate through a
woman’s clothing. Many people think that menstrual blood smells bad, and this is not necessarily
true.
While the vagina has a certain smell that is caused by vaginal microflora, or the normal bacteria
that live in the vagina, this should not cause menstrual blood to smell bad.
If the menstrual blood does indeed smell foul, then this may be a sign of a vaginal infection. A
doctor should be consulted to confirm if there is an infection and the possible solutions that can be
done.
Menstrual blood is just blood.
Menstrual blood is a mixture of different substances. Apart from blood, the discharge during
menstruation includes the shed-off lining of the endometrium, some secretions of the vagina, and
mucus. This is the reason why menstrual discharge is not just a liquid like blood is.
Menstruation makes a woman lose a lot of blood.
As was mentioned earlier, the discharge during menstruation is not just blood. Blood only makes
up a certain percentage of this discharge, and that loss is not usually significant enough to be a
cause for concern.
Menstrual blood comes from different organs.
Some people believe that the blood that exits the vagina comes from many different organs. The
truth is that mostly comes from the uterus and some of the blood vessels associated with the
organ.
Bathing is harmful during the menstrual period.
This is false. There is no scientific basis for bathing or showering to be completely stopped when a
woman is on her period. Some studies suggest that taking a warm bath or shower may help relieve
menstrual cramps. Menstrual cramps occur when the uterus contracts to help release the
endometrial lining.
All women have similar characteristics of their menstrual cycle.
The full menstrual cycle usually takes 28 days, although this can vary from person to person. Some
women will have a cycle longer than 28 days, and other women can have it shorter than that.
All menstrual periods are painful.
Dysmenorrhea refers to the pain felt by women in the abdomen during menstruation and is caused
by the contraction of the uterus. This pain varies, as some women experience severe pain during
menstruation while others do not.

Nocturnal Emissions and Circumcision

Nocturnal Emissions
Nocturnal emissions happen when a male involuntarily releases semen while asleep. While asleep,
brain activities stimulate the process of ejaculation that involves the release of semen. Semen
contains sperm cells and other liquids that nourish the sperm.

Circumcision
The practice of circumcision involves removing the prepuce of the penis, which is also known as
the foreskin. Some studies show that circumcision may have health benefits, and may be able to
prevent infections and some types of diseases. Some of the diseases that can be prevented include
urinary tract infections (UTI), and some types of sexually transmitted diseases.

Myths and Misconceptions

Nocturnal emissions are unhealthy and can reduce sperm count.
Nocturnal emissions are involuntary ejaculations and a normal process that is associated with
puberty. When a body action is involuntary, it means that the action cannot be controlled.
Nocturnal emissions do not negatively impact a person’s health and do not reduce sperm count as
many people believe.
Nocturnal emissions are made up of urine.
Nocturnal emissions are primarily composed of semen, and urine is completely different from what
is released during a nocturnal emission. Nonetheless, proper hygiene must still be observed if a
male
has had nocturnal emissions or nighttime urination.
Nocturnal emissions stop after puberty.
It does not stop after puberty as many adults can still experience nocturnal emissions. As
mentioned earlier though, the frequency of nocturnal emissions can vary from person to person.
Some people will completely stop experiencing nocturnal emissions after puberty, whereas some
will not.
Nocturnal emissions are something to be ashamed about.
As was said earlier, nocturnal emissions are a normal part of puberty, and are involuntary. Many
people experience them and they are nothing to be ashamed about.
Being uncircumcised is something to be ashamed about.
There are some religions and cultures that frown upon or outright ban circumcision. Uncircumcised
males should not be ashamed about not being circumcised because of their beliefs.
Circumcision is always painful.
It is not necessarily painful. While circumcision can be a painful process to experience, the
tolerance for pain can vary from person to person. Surgical circumcision can also involve
anesthetics, which are drugs that dull sensations and can reduce the amount of pain felt by a
person during the process.

Activity 1
Write true if the statement is accurate, and false otherwise.
1. All women have the same menstrual cycles.
2. Menstrual discharge is supposed to smell bad.
3. Vaginal microflora is always harmful.
4. Sometimes skipping a menstrual cycle is normal.
5. Menstrual blood comes from different organs.
6. Nocturnal emission happens to all men.
7. Circumcision is something to be embarrassed about.
8. Circumcision is practiced by all cultures.
9. Nocturnal emission frequencies may vary.
10. All nocturnal emissions stop after puberty.

Process Questions:
1. What is puberty?

2. How does puberty cause changes in a teenager?

3. What are common misconceptions that people have about the changes that happen?

FIRM-UP

Nutritional and Health Concerns

Oilier Skin and More Sweat

During puberty, a person’s sebaceous glands and sweat glands produce more oil and sweat,
respectively. If proper hygiene is not observed, then certain skin conditions can arise from these
changes.

Hair Growth
Certain parts of the body will see an increased amount of hair growth. Some of these parts
include the groin, legs, armpits, and arms for both males and females. Facial hair growth, as well
as hair growth in the chest and the back, are more common for men.

Growth Spurts and Weight Gain

A fast increase in height, and sometimes increased weight, can happen during puberty. For
normal growth to occur, a proper diet must always be observed. Exercise is also recommended to
strengthen the body and prevent excessive weight gain which can potentially be unhealthy.

Dental Problems
Some adolescents also report problems with oral and dental health. Common issues include the
following:
● crooked teeth, which refer to overlapping or improper alignment of teeth;
● caries, or the decay of teeth;
● cavities, which are holes that appear in teeth; and,
● dental plaque, which is caused by bacteria forming films on teeth.

Menstruation, Menstrual Cramps, and Dysmenorrhea

A girl’s first menstruation, which is the release of blood during the menstrual cycle, begins during
puberty. It is perhaps one of the most significant changes that a girl can experience during
adolescence, and some lifestyle changes must be done to address menstruation.

Coping With the Changes During Puberty

There are many ways of coping with these changes healthily and adequately. These ways include
proper nutrition, exercise, and good hygiene.

Proper Nutrition
The body is undergoing rapid growth during puberty, so proper nutrition is needed even more. A
balanced diet refers to a diet that has all the necessary nutrients in the appropriate amounts, and
this kind of diet is needed during puberty.

Exercise and Rest

The proper intensity of regular exercise can be beneficial, especially during puberty. Puberty is
when the body starts to grow quickly, and this may sometimes be associated with weight gain.
Exercise can help in the development of muscles, and preventing excessive weight gain. Rest is
also essential, as it is during sleep when the body recovers and grows the most.

Good Hygiene
Proper hygiene of the body can help prevent body odor and skin conditions. Regular bathing, using
skin products to prevent skin conditions, and wearing clean clothes are good ways of doing this.

Process Questions:
1. How would you handle the effects of mental, emotional and social health concerns?

2. How will you develop/ nurture personal health?

DEEPEN
Early and Unwanted Pregnancy
Pregnancy
Pregnancy occurs when a woman is carrying a developing baby inside her body. There are many
responsibilities associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and raising a child. This means that a woman
should not only be physically mature but also emotionally and mentally mature enough before she
decides to have a child.
How Pregnancy Happens
Pregnancy happens when a man’s sperm cells are produced by the testes, and a woman’s egg cells
are produced by the ovaries meet and fuse. This fusion is a process known as fertilization. The
sperm and the egg have a possibility of meeting if a couple engages in sexual intercourse or coitus.
Sexual intercourse should only be performed by couples that are emotionally and mentally mature
enough, since this act may carry the possibility of making the female pregnant.

Early or Unwanted Pregnancy

Early pregnancy occurs if a female is either not ready or not mentally prepared for having children,
but pregnancy has occurred. The leading cause of early pregnancy is the engagement of people in
premarital sexual intercourse, which is performing sexual intercourse without being married first.
This is also the primary reason behind teenage pregnancy.

Unwanted pregnancies, on the other hand, are pregnancies that are unplanned. These are caused
either by failing to take into account natural or artificial methods of contraception when performing
sexual intercourse, which resulted in pregnancy.

How to Prevent Early and Unwanted Pregnancy

There are ways of preventing early and unwanted pregnancies. Some of these are the following:
Avoiding Premarital Sexual Intercourse
The best way to prevent early pregnancy is to avoid premarital sexual intercourse, even more so
for minors who are not of sufficient emotional or mental maturity.
Proper Education
Proper education on the menstrual cycle, how pregnancies can occur, and sex education are also
good ways of preventing early and unwanted pregnancies. Educating people about the risks
involved with sexual intercourse can increase awareness of the proper methods of stopping early
