COLLAS - Module 2 - Missionary Response

The document discusses the mandates for religious congregations to incorporate justice, peace, and integrity of creation into their missions. As a missionary congregation, the CICM has added protecting indigenous peoples' rights and legacies in mission areas as well as interreligious dialogue as priorities. To effectively pursue these advocacies, five values are enumerated: 1) compassion towards all people, 2) respect for other cultures and religions, 3) endurance to withstand challenges to beliefs, 4) generosity in serving the poor, and 5) fortitude to withstand pressures and difficulties while devoting oneself to God's cause.

COLLAS, JENSEN MYLES M.

MISSIONARY RESPONSE

Generally, all religious congregations for men and women worldwide are mandated to incorporate
“Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation” as the new areopagi into their mission. The CICM, as a
missionary congregation, submits itself to this mandate. It added the fourth and fifth priorities that came
out from the actual participation of the past and present missionaries. These are the protection of the
rights and legacies of the Indigenous Peoples in their mission areas. And in line with the mandate of Nostra
Aetate (1964) by Pope John Paul II, Interreligious dialogue is included. The CICM, as a congregation,
spearheads the actual ecumenical encounters, interfaith dialogues, and interreligious dialogue.

To be one in mind and heart in helping the CICM pursue their advocacies, what values do we need to
nurture so that we can withstand the pressures in promoting JPIC, IRD, and IP?

Enumerate five and justify why these values are needed. (20 points)

1. Compassion- As CICM missionaries, it is important to possess compassion towards all creation of

the Lord. In line with the JPIC and IRD, as long as when dealing with IP, we must practice kindness
for all our neighbors regardless of their background and their beliefs. In performing our duties to
God and His creation, we must always remind ourselves to do it with love and compassion.

2. Respect- We must understand that not every person we encounter will share our beliefs nor will
everyone have the same upbringing and life situations. Because of this, one of the most crucial
virtues to practice as Christians is respect. This is heavily stressed in interreligious dialogues, as
having respect for everyone is the key to peace and prosperity. If we remain respectful of other
cultures and religions, we are able to remove biases and perform our duties despite our
differences.

3. Endurance - Dedicating ourselves to God’s cause and living the life of a devout missionary, we are
all bound to be faced by challenges by the unbelievers and difficult situations. Because of this, it
is inevitable for times to come when we might face doubt. A true CICM missionary must endure
and stay true to their belief regardless of the hindrances and temptations. We must learn to be
steadfast and keep God at the center of our life, to be able to serve our duties to Him and the
church.

4. Generosity - "The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor."
– Proverbs 22:9. God teaches us to be altruistic – to serve the poor and the needy. We must always
be ready to reach out a helping hand and care for those who are unfortunate. With generosity
comes authenticity. This means that true giving must come from a good heart and clean
intentions.
5. Fortitude - Without a doubt, living a Christian life and devoting yourself to help pursue the CICM
advocacy, will not be a walk in the park. To be able to withstand the pressures and difficulties that
will arise in this journey, we must take heart and be brave. Take strength from God’s words and
His guidance. Do not be weary or afraid of the unknown, let God guide you to your purpose and
walk the path that He has made for you with courage.
