1. The document provides 5 problems related to quantum mechanics for an assignment due on August 22nd. The problems cover topics like scattering from delta function potentials, double well potentials, bound states in step potentials, double slit interference, and the hydrogen atom. 2. Problem 1 asks to calculate reflection and transmission coefficients for scattering from a repulsive delta function potential. 3. Problem 2 involves solving for the ground and first excited states of a particle in a double delta function potential well. 4. Problem 3 determines the value of a constant a in terms of the energy of a bound state in a step potential with an additional delta function. 5. The remaining problems and reading material involve normalizing the

PH225 Assignment-2 -15th Aug 2023

• problems to be submitted on 22nd Aug 11:30pm ,

unmarked problems are for practice.

1. • Calculate the reflection coefficient (R) and the transmission coefficient (T) for scat-
tering off a repulsive delta function potential V (x) = aVo δ(x).
2. A particle is in one-dimensional double well potential

V (x) = −gδ(x − a) − gδ(x + a)

Show that the ground state has even parity and that it always exists. Sketch the
solution to show that the first excited state may exist only for sufficiently large values
if the separation 2a (please see nptel week 2 videos where the solution is discussed in
detail).
3. • A particle of mass m is in a potential V (x) = V0 θ(x) − aδ(x), where V0 and a are
real& positive constants, δ(x) is the Dirac delta function and θ(x) is the step function.
That is., θ(x) = 0 if x < 0 and θ(x) = 1 if x > 0. Determine the constant a in terms of
the non-zero bound state energy −|E|. For barely bound state, that is |E| ≈ 0, what
is the value of V0 ?
4. Suppose in a double slit experiment, the waves emitted by slits 1 and 2 are represented
by ψ1 (~r, t) and ψ2 (~r, t) respectively. Write down the intensity produced on the screen
when both slits are open.
5. If the wavefunction ψ(r, θ, φ) for the case of hydrogen atom is written in a separable
form R(r)Θ(θ)Φ(φ), the radial part of the Schrodinger equation will be as follows:
e2
! " ! #
1 d 2 dR 2m `(` + 1)
r + E + − R = 0,
r2 dr dr h̄2 4π0 r r2
where the symbols have their usual meaning. For the ground state of hydrogen atom,
` = 0. Recall Z ∞
rp exp(−r)dr = Γ(p + 1) = p!

(i) Assuming ψ(r, θ, φ) = N exp(−r/a) is a ground state wavefunction(solution of the
above equation). Determine the normalisation factor N , energy En=1 and the Bohr
radius a.
• (ii) Obtain the mean distance between the electron and the nucleus in terms of Bohr
radius a.
(iii) The classically forbidden region is
A. 0 ≤ r ≤ a/2 ; B. a/2 ≤ r ≤ a ; C. a ≤ r ≤ 2a ; D. r > 2a
