五、篇章結構(每格 1 分,共 4 分)
(A) One of these members was Suzanne Spaak.
(B) Suzanne Spaak made great sacrifices to save others.
(C) Unfortunately, in 1943 German soldiers caught Spaak in Paris.
(D) Therefore, she joined the Red Orchestra and made every effort to save the lives of Jews.
In 1942, German troops in Europe began arresting members of the Red Orchestra, an anti-
Nazi resistance organization. Over the next two years, they put over six hundred Red
Orchestra members in prison, where they were tortured and killed. __①__ But when Spaak’s
life came to an end at the hands of the prison guards, she took with her a secret that saved
hundreds of Jewish lives.
Spaak was born into a rich banking family in Brussels, Belgium. Later she moved to Paris
and lived a life of luxury with her husband and two children. When France was taken over by
the Nazis, she couldn’t stand the crimes they were committing against the Jewish people. __
②__ In 1943, 163 Jewish children were rounded up to be sent to death camps. Spaak rescued
many of the children, hiding them in her house and then finding local families who could take
them in. Spaak also used her high social standing to convince clerics*, judges, authors, and

also given a list with such details to other members of the underground movement. Because
the Nazis were never able to get this information from Spaak, countless Jews were saved.
__④__ She could have survived and maintained her luxurious lifestyle after the war. But
instead, she gave up her own life. For this, she will always be remembered.

六、閱讀測驗(每格 1 分,共 3 分)
Imagine you’re an African slave in America in 1800. Every day you are tortured, forced
to work long hours, and fed just barely enough food to survive. One day, you escape. Off the
plantation*, you are assisted by not one but dozens of Americans over the course of several
weeks. One by one, they hide you and transport you to Canada, where you become a free
person.
This is not a fictional* story but a reality that was faced by around 100,000 slaves. The
vast system of escape routes and people who assisted slaves to escape is referred to as the
Underground Railroad. Actually neither “underground” nor a “railroad,” the system consisted
of secret hiding places called “stations.” People who hid slaves in their houses were “station
masters,” and guides between stations were “conductors*.” The slaves themselves were
referred to as “passengers” or “cargo*.”
So who were these so-called station masters and conductors? Mostly, they were regular
citizens who disagreed that humans could be treated like farm animals. Willing to break the
law, these people took great risks to help slaves make their way to freedom. In the end, we
will never know an exact number of people who participated. In the same way, most of their
names remain unknown. But due to their heroic efforts, thousands of lives were saved.
