ARTS 10- MEDIA BASED ARTS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Week 1-4

Categories Of Media-Based Arts In The Philippines Are:

2. FILM/CINEMA

PHOTOGRAPHY
Photography – it came from the Greek Word “PHOTOS” meaning LIGHT and “GRAPHOS” meaning writing as states this process
literally.

PHOTOGRAPHY as A PROCESS
- Focusing the camera at the subject and clicking the shutter is photography as a PROCESS.
PHOTGRAPHY as ARTS
- Decerning a significant moment or a unique expression, framing it in the camera view finder and then clicking the
shutter is Photography as an ART.
Photography is one of the most powerful means of communication.

FILM/CINEMA
- the transition from still photography came in the late 1800’s with the “series photography” and invention of celluloid
strip film. This allowed successive still photos and moving subjects to be captured on a strip or film advancing through
a single camera.
French develop the “CINEMATOGRAPHE”
PEOPLE WHO WORK COLLABORATIVELY IN THE ART OF FILM MAKING:
a. DIRECTOR – he envisions the final effect of the film on its viewers. He works with ideas, images, sounds and other effects
to create this unique piece of art. He also conceptualizes the scenes, directs the acting, supervises the cinematography and
finally editing and sound dubbing in much the same way as visual artist composes an artwork.
b. FILM ACTOR – expresses themselves with the exaggerated facial expressions and gestures. They had to learn to deliver
their lines/dialogues naturally and believably.
c. CINEMATOGRAPHY – the art and technology of motion picture photography. It involves such techniques as the general
composition of the scene: lighting of the set, choice of camera, lenses, filters and film stock.
d. EDITING – the art of selecting the precise sections of film, then sequencing and joining them to achieve the director’s
desired visual and emotional effects.
e. PRODUCTION DESIGNER – they work closely with the director, choreographers and other team members like costume
designers. He is also responsible to scout location shooting
f. SET DESIGNER – responsible for the design and style of physical surroundings, selection of any furniture or props

1. LINO BROCKA – he directed the films suchs as ‘Tinimbang ka ngunit kulang”, “Maynila, Sa Mga Kuko ng Lwanag in 1975
2. MIKE DE LEON – he created films like “ITIM”(1976)”, Sister Stella L, Bayaning 3 rd World
3. ISHMAEL BERNAL – he created the famous film “HIMALA”.
4. PEQUE GALLAGA – he created the Philippine historical war drama “ ORO,PLATA, MATA” in 1983.
5. LAURICE GUILLEN – she is the protégé of Lino Brocka and directed “TANGING YAMAN”(2001); AMERICAN ADOBO (2002);
SANTA SANTITA (2004); and SA’YO LAMANG (2010)
6. MARILOU DIAZ-ABAYA- a multi-awarded director behind the film “JOSE RIZAL(1998), “MURO-AMI(1999) and “BAGONG
BUWAN”(2001)
7. MARYO DELOS REYES – he created the heartfelt film “MAGNIFICO(2003)
8. BRILLANTE MENDOZA – he is an independent filmmaker who created the film “KINATAY” where he won BEST Director
award at CANNES FILM FESTIVAL of 2009

COMPOSITIONS USED IN PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM MAKING


1. RULES OF THIRDS – it involves 2 horizontal and 2 vertical lines as guide in taking your photos. It suggests placing key
elements of your photo at the points where any of the lines intersect.
2. ANGLES – refers to the degree at which the camera points towards the subjects.
Different types of ANGLE Shots:
 Eye level shot
 High angle shot
 Low Angle shot
 Bird’s Eye Angle Shot
 Canted angle shot
3. LEADING LINES – these lines often draw the viewer’s eye in a specific direction or towards a designated portion of the
photographs.
4. SYMMETRY – also known as FORMAL BALANCE, is achieved when both sides of the image hold equal weight.
5. LIGHTING – it is the key factor in creating a successful image. It determines not only brightness and darkness but also tone,
mood and the atmosphere.

ANIMATION
 Animation is the process of designing, drawing, making layouts and preparation of photographic sequences
which are integrated in the multimedia and gaming products.

Notable Animator Groups in the Philippines


a. Animation Council of the Philippines Inc. (ACPI)
- A non- stock, non-profit organization that aims to create an identity for the Philippines within the animation industry,
making it one of the preferred source for animation services worldwide.
- Conducted the yearly event ANIMAHENASYON – a contest and also to award the young animators across the country.
b. Philippine Animation Studios Inc. (PASI)
- It has been in the forefront of the animation industry since 1991. With its goal “to develop and promote the Filipino
artist” PASI is consistently working with numerous industry giants and major players in the animation and
entertainment industries.

PRINT MEDIA

DIGITAL MEDIA
- Any form of media that uses electronic devices for distribution.
