Problem 2:

1. Determine the required discharge of a sprinkler system to apply water at a rate of

15 mm/h. Two 186m sprinkler laterals with 16 sprinklers each at 12.2m spacing
on the line and 18.3m spacing between laterals are required.

Answer: 0.93 L/s

2. Determine the discharge rate for one sprinkler operating at 270 kPa and having
two nozzles, a 4.0 mm (range nozzle) and a 2.4 (spreader nozzle) mm in diameter,
with discharge coefficients of 0.96.

Answer: 0.38L/s

3. Compute the depth rate of application for a 0.6L/s sprinkler head if the sprinkler
spacing is 9.1 × 12.2 m.

Answer: 19.46mm/h

4. Compute the total friction loss for a sprinkler system having a 101.6mm diameter
main 250 m long and one 76.2mm lateral 122 m long with 10 sprinkler heads. The
pump delivers 8.0 L/s. Sixteen-gauge aluminum pipe (1.3 mm wall thickness) and
standard couplers are used.

Answer: 7.84m

5. If the pressures at opposite ends of a sprinkler lateral are 290 and 260 kPa, what
would be the discharge of the distal sprinkler if the sprinkler at the 290-kPa end
discharged 0.8 L/s?

Answer: 0.757L/s

6. Twenty sample cans are uniformly spaced in the area covered by four sprinklers.
The following depths were caught in the cans: 27, 24, 21, 27, 24, 22, 22, 26, 21,
20, 19, 23, 20, 18, 16, 20, 26, 22, 15, and 17 mm. Determine the uniformity
coefficient and the distribution uniformity low-quarter.

Answer: UC = 0.87, DULQ = 0.79

7. Determine the total pumping head for a sprinkler irrigation system on level land.
The average operating pressure at the nozzle is 276 kPa; the friction loss in the
main is 5 m and 3.7 m in the lateral, the drawdown in the well is 4.3 m at the
required discharge of 32 L/s; the riser height is 1.5 m; and friction loss in all
valves and suction line is 3.0 m. The static water level is 30 m below the surface.
Determine the power requirement for the pump if it operates at 70% efficiency.

Answer: 33.45KW
