This document provides 3 homework problems for a steel structures course. Problem 1 involves determining the column orientation, deformed shape, effective length factors, and maximum axial load for columns in a frame. Problem 2 involves finding the maximum axial load that can be supported by a truss member. Problem 3 involves selecting a tee-shape for the top chord of a roof truss using load and resistance factor design (LRFD) and given loads.

CE411-Steel Structures Fall 2023

Homework#3: Column Design (Due April 18)

Problem#1: A frame given in Fig. 1 is composed of W-shapes (Fy=355 MPa). Lateral joint
translation is prevented by the braced frames in the perpendicular direction. Determine the
following:
(a) Show the column orientation required to obtain maximum compressive strength possible.
(b) Draw the deformed shape of the frame when column AB and CD buckles about x- and y-
axes, respectively.
(c) Find the effective length factors for columns AB and CD.
(b) Find the maximum axial load in compression that can be supported by column AB and CD.

Problem#2: Find the maximum Pr that can be supported by the truss member shown in Fig. 2.
Note that an additional lateral bracing in the out-of-plane direction is provided at the mid-
length. HSS200×200×18 with Fy=275 MPa is employed and L=3 m. Use LRFD only.

Problem#3: Select a Tee-shape for the top chord of the truss given in Figure 4 using LRFD
approach. P consists of dead load of 60 kN and snow load of 40 kN. Note that a lateral bracing
is provided at each joint in the out-of-plane direction.
