LESSON 1 KNOWING ONESELF

Personal development starts with knowing oneself. Before you start to build and improve your
relationship with other people and before you can identify and set your career and life goals, you should
know yourself well first.

The Johari Window

The Johari window is a helpful tool in discovering the self. This allows you a review of yourself, the
things you know and still do not know and what others see of you.

Dimensions of the Self: Physical, Psychological and Spiritual

The word “self” is popularly and generally defines as what an individual sees, perceives and defines
oneself apart from others. To know oneself, one must distinguish the three apart from each other.
1. Physical- revolves around the physical body of a human being. This is responsible for giving us
the ability to move our muscles to perceive our surroundings and to think of the ideas and
opinions and bring wonders to our lives and of others.
2. Psychological- contains the concepts of stress, cognition, behaviour, attitude, emotion and
personality.
3. Spiritual- allows one to view oneself in spiritual level-spiritual beings. This dimension cannot be
observed but can be subjectively altered and perceived by the person. It holds the perceived
existence of God or a Supreme Being.

Attitude and Its Components: Affect, Behavior, Cognition

A key factor in personality development is attitude- a settled way of thinking and feeling about
someone or something that typically reflecting in a person’s behavior. Attitude manifests itself as behavior,
as a representative of personality.
Attitude can be both implicit and explicit. Implicit attitudes are thoughts and feelings that conscious
awareness does not cover. Explicit attitudes can be perceived consciously and expressed accordingly.
For attitude to come into existence, its needs three components, namely:
1. Affect- a term used in Psychology to represent emotions directed to self, environment and to
others.
2. Cognition- is the way we think. It encompasses our thoughts in different levels ranging from
ourselves to our environment, fro imaginary to perceivable.
3. Behavior- is the action or manifestation of attitude. Without attitude, affect cognition and
behavior will be rendered baseless and ungrounded.

Human beings learn as it interacts with its environment, thus, it experience. Experience, as they say,
is the best teacher. Attitudes can form consequently through this, either from personal encounters or
observed consequences.

Your roles in a social environment and the social norm affect attitude. This is also related to
ones upbringing as well.
2. Learning or Classical Conditioning
You tend to associate what you have observed in your environment with your attitude. Your
attitude is the product of your observation in your environment.
3. Operant Conditioning
You develop your attitude basing on your experience with your environment. If one
experience elicits pleasurable results, then you continue the same behavior and if not you
disregard the behavior.
4. Modelling
Human beings learn their attitude through a model which they imitate.

The Role of Self- concept and Self-esteem

“I think, therefore I am.”- Rene Descartes

Self Concept is your cognition to ourselves, what you think and know about your identity, personality
and individuality. It requires a lot of self-evaluation and reflection to be able to say that your self-concept is
high.
Self-esteem is related to self-concept but it is different. It is how you value yourself.
Self concept is purely or mostly informational while self-esteem is emotionally inclined.
