Formatting Instructions

Students should use Latex Document Preparation system for generating their reports. The
following are some guidelines that need to be followed for generating the report as per NITK
format

Binding: Use transparency sheet as front cover and thick binding sheet rear cover for the
report. (do not use spiral binding)

Length: Title page (1 pg) Abstract (1 pg, between 300 - 500 words), contents page (1pg),
Introduction (2 to 5 pages), Body ( e.g. Literature Review, Problem Description, actual work
done etc) (> 12 pages), Conclusion (1 pg), References (1 to 2 pages) and Appendices
(Optional: 1 to 5 pages)

PageFormat: Margins (left, right, top, bottom – 1 inch)

Headings:

Main Headings - Heading 1 Times 16 font, align center, bold, numbered with set of digits,
leave 2 blank lines (12pt Times) after the main heading

Sub headings: level -1: Heading 2 Times 14 font, align left, bold, italics, numbered with
set of digits (e.g. 1.1, 1.2 etc for subheadings of chapter 1)

Sub subheadings: level -2: Times 12 font, bold, left aligned, numbered (e.g. 1.1.1, 1.2.1
etc for sub-sub-headings of subheading 1.1.)

Body: 12 pt Times font, justified, 1.5”paragraph spacing for text

Figures/ Tables: Place Tables/Figures/Images within the text as close to the reference,
centered. Captions should be Times 10 pt bold and centered. They should be
numbered.Please note that the word for Table and Figure are to be spelled out. A figure’s
captions should be centered beneath the image or picture, and Table captions should be
centered above the table body. (e.g., “Table 1.1” or “Figure 2.3” etc for the first table in
Chapter 1, or for the third figure in chapter 2)
PageNumbering, HeadersandFooters: Do not include headers, footers. UseLatex's default
page numbering feature (bottom middle) in your report. Exclude abstract, certificate etcup
toIndex of contents page while adding page numbering.

References: List and number all bibliographical references in 10-point Times, at the end of
your report. Below are the samples for journal paper, books and Web references. You may
use IEEE Xplore/ACM Digital Library/ Google Scholar to obtain the standard way of including
references. References must be cited properly within the main content of your report.

Note: Sample cover page and certificate formats are provided separately. A hard copy of the
seminar report should be submitted to the examiners of each session (also a soft copy to
each of the examiners) at least 2 days prior to the presentation. Reports not submitted within
the specified time frame and without necessary formatting will not be accepted for
presentation.
