Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics III

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the pupils are expected to:
a. derive a formula for finding the area of rectangle
b. tell a formula for finding the area of rectangle
c. use the formula in finding the area of a rectangle; and
d. appreciate the importance of cooperation.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Derive a Formula for Finding the Area of Rectangle
Reference: BEC PELC IV B 1.3.1 Mathematics Grade 3 pp.
Materials: activity cards/sheets with rectangle figure, cartolina, illustration board,
pentel pen, chalkboard, book, charts, ruler
Value Focus: Cooperation

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Pupils Activity

A. Preliminary Activities
The teacher will present to the
class the learning targets of the day.

 I can der derive a formula for finding the

area of rectangle.
 I can tell a formula for finding the area of rectangle.
 I can use the formula in finding the area of a
rectangle; and
 I can appreciate the importance of cooperation.

1. Drill

Good morning class.

Class, before we will start our our lesson,

we are going to have a game entitled “Arrange me please”.
I will divide the class into four groups and you should stay on
your group until the end of our activities.

This will be name of every group :

Group 1 – Group Arf Arf
Group 2 – Group Meow Meow
Group 3 – Group Oink Oink
Group 4 – Group Meee Meee

Listen class, each group will be provided a cut

out pictures to arrange. Every group must choose
2 representatives to arrange the picture on the board.
The group who arrange first the pictures must shout
their group names for them to declare as the winner.
b
Did you understand class? Yes, teacher.
Let us start.
Okay 1… 2…. 3… Go!
Group 1:

Group 2:

Group 3:

Group 4 :

Our winner for this game is Group_________.

Let’s give them Araneta Clap.

2. Motivation
Class , this morning we will going to sing a
song entitled “ This is the day”.

This is the day (2x)

That we’re waiting for (2x)
We’ll learn our Math (2x)
And apply them all (2x)

So this is the day

That we solve problems
We’ll learn them all
And apply the well.

This is the time (2x)

That we’re waiting for.

Did you like the song? Yes, teacher.

What is the song all about? It’s all about solving
problems.
What are we going to do with the problems? We have to learn how
to solve problems.
Now , are you ready to solve problems? Yes, teacher.

Very Good.

B. Developmental Activities

1. Presentation of New Lesson

Class, look at the given figure.

What do you call the figure on

the board? That is a rectangle teacher.

Very Good!

How many sides are there in a rectangle?

4 sides teacher.

Great!

In this rectangle, who can go to the

board and tell us where is the length and
Width of the rectangle?
Yes Dana? (Dana go to the board to tell
us
where is the length and
Width
of the rectangle)

Very good!

What can you say about the length and the

width class? Are they equal? No, teacher.

Yes they are not.

2. Teaching/Modeling (I do it- Teacher only)

Class, I will present to you another illustration.

Try to look at this one.

What can you observe about the rectangle? It has many square
units inside
the rectangle.

That’s right!

What is the length of the rectangle? 6 cm.

How about it’s width? 4 cm.

Correct!

This time, let’s count the squares inside

the rectangle. (Teacher and pupils started
to
count the square units)

So, how many square units are there? 24 square units teacher.

Correct.

Now, what shall we do with the numbers 6 and 4

To get the answer 24? Multiply numbers 6 and 4.
You got it right!

That’s how we are going to find the area of rectangle.

Just simply multiply the length and width of the rectangle.

Area of the Rectangle = Length X Width or

It goes like this :
A=LxW
A = 6cm x 4 cm
A = 24 sq. cm or 24cm

3. Guided Practice (We do it- Teacher and Pupils only)

I will show you another example class.

(Teacher and pupils will together read the problem)

The comfort room has a length of 8m

and a width of 4m.What is the area of
the black comfort room?

To find the area of rectangle :

1. Find the length (L)

2. Find the width (W)
3. Write the formula and perform the indicated operations

A=LxW
= 8m x 4m
A = 32 sq. meter

Another example class.

This time we will find the area and complete the chart.

LENGTH WIDTH AREA

1. 3cm 7cm
2. 5cm 4cm
3. 6m 5m

1.A = L x W 2. A = L x W 3. A = L x W
= 7cm x 3cm = 9cm x 4cm = 6m x 5m
A = 21 sq. c A = 32 sq. cm A = 30 sq. m

4.Independent Practice (You do it- Pupils Only)

a. Group Activity
Okay class, we will have a group activity.
You will be divided in fourr groups. Listen,
There are four stations in this classroom.
Each station has a certain instruction on
what you are going to do.
Group Arf Arf should be at station 1,
Group Meow Meow at station 2, Group Oink Oink at station 3 and
Group 4 Meee Meee in station 4.
You only have 1 minute to answer question
in every station. When you heard a whistle you
immediately proceed to another station.

Read, understand and follow the direction given.

After 4 minutes, we will check your work.

Station 1

Direction: Read and analyze the word problem.

A bedroom is 8 meters long and 7 meters

wide. What is the total area of the bedroom?

Station 2

Direction: Complete the chart.

2. 8cm 5cm

4 minutes is over! Let us check your work.

Post your anwers on the board.

Answer :

Station 1

A=LxW
= 8m x 7m
A = 56 sq. meters
Station 2

L = 6cm
W = 3cm
A = 18 sq. cm

Station 3

A = 12m sq. meters

Station 4

1. 10 m 5m 50 sq. m
2. 8cm 5cm 40 sq.

Very good class!

Let us give fireworks clap to the winning group.

5.Application

Okay class, this time we will be going to

have another group activity.
You will be answering questions with the same group.
Each group will be given different questions to analyze and solve.
You just have 5 minutes to answer. After the
given time, we will check your work.

Group Arf Arf:

Direction: Complete the table below. Find the area.

2. Mrs. Santos has a table in the shape of rectangle. The table is 3m long and 5m wide.
What is the area of rectangle.

Okay class, 5 minutes is over. Are you done? Yes Ma’am.

Let us check your work now.
C. Generalization :

How can you find the area of a rectangle? Multiply the length
and width.

What is the appropriate formula in finding

area of rectangle? A=LxW

How doid you work with your group? Cooperate, teacher.

Is the cooperation/collaboration important in a
group activity? Why? Yes, because the
group
work will be easier if there is
cooperation, teacher.

IV. EVALUATION

Okay class, if you really understand our lesson

today, I want you to get 1 whole sheet of paper.
