I am delighted to apply for the Master of Professional Accounting at the Victoria

University of Wellington inspired by my ambition to pursue a career as a Chartered

Accountant. I am convinced this course will allow me to ultimately achieve my goal
by vastly expanding my knowledge of accountancy.
I am drawn to the course’s holistic approach of offering a balance between theoretical
and practical modules. Business, finance, and accounting has been a passion of mine
for some years now. Coming from the global south where this field of Accounting is
male-dominated, I am motivated to be an inspiration to young women in my home
community and break the barriers. Furthermore, I believe that within the financial
world, especially in Zimbabwe, the importance of good fiscal decision-making is
paramount, as well as the preparation of accounts and other related practices. The
development of companies and monetary systems is a particular field of study that I
find fascinating as it goes hand in hand with my love of problem-solving.

My background in accounting has provided me with an excellent basis from which to

start my advanced studies in Accounting. My strong numerical skills have led me to
successfully complete a course in accounting, which has enabled me to establish
myself in financial accounting and reporting roles in financial firms. Over the course
of my studies, I developed so much interest in Strategic Financial Management. This
study area introduced me to financial products and concepts such as equities,
derivatives, fixed income, and bonds, along with their significance in financial
markets. I am now a qualified Assistant Accountant where my existing work
experience has further exposed me to the financial industry, while also helping me to
identify a core element of my career aspirations by making me increasingly aware of
my desire to become more involved in strategic decision-making processes. In my
current position as Assistant Accountant at Netone, I work within the finance team in
the Taxation and Reporting department. I have successfully;

● Monitored budget performance and variance and initiated corrective action

● Assisted in the preparation of accurate and complete monthly, quarterly, half
yearly and annual management accounts and financial reports
● Prepared general ledger reconciliations and ensured that reconciling items are
cleared within stipulated times
● Prepared monthly audit files and ensured accuracy on the input to the files
● Reviewed transactions posted in the accounting system on a daily basis for
accuracy
● Ensured that annual statutory returns are produced and submitted within the
stipulated time
● Monitored financial information system to ensure that timely and accurate
information is provided for decision making
● Liaised with and supports internal and external auditors in completing audits
● Coordinated clearing of non-conformities raised by internal and external
auditors to avoid recurrences
This post has honed my ability to work under pressure and time constraints and to
meet urgent and conflicting deadlines. As a flexible individual, I can adapt quickly to
a fast-paced and challenging environment where systems, processes and procedures
can change at short notice.

In the long term, the transferable skills gained will allow me to establish a reputable
financial consulting firm in my home country (Zimbabwe) which will provide a range
of financial services to companies and public institutions alike. I believe this can be
achieved through my experience at Victoria University of Wellington, leveraging on
networks developed, and through personal determination. I believe that holding an
MSc from the Victoria University of Wellington would better qualify me to manage
corporate, strategic, and financial opportunities. Having such a qualification in New
Zealand is highly regarded in my home country. Furthermore, I would have the
opportunity to gain experience from talented professors, while exchanging learning
within a diverse group. With all this background, this course will go a long way in
allowing me to attain my goals.
My decision to apply to study at the Victoria University of Wellington is due to the
university’s record of offering a comprehensive range of internationally recognized
courses and degrees, academic excellence and its ability to equip students with the
skills of critical analysis essential to becoming leaders in their chosen sectors, as well
as its spectacular location with fantastic facilities, thus providing good links with the
world of business and finance and enhancing opportunities for personal and
professional development. I value and respect the input and opinions of others,
making me an excellent team-player, while also being fully able to work
independently and with minimal supervision. I believe these competencies will prove
useful in developing my potential as a finance analyst, as well as helping me to excel
in my academic performance.
