In May 1871, Germany and defeated France signed the Treaty of Frankfurt.
The signing of the treaty marked the end of War A. The main clauses of the
treaty include:
▪ France ceded Alsace-Lorraine to Germany
▪ France paid an indemnity of five billion francs to Germany
▪ Certain parts of France were under German military occupation until the
indemnity was paid
The signing of the Treaty of Frankfurt between Germany and France was a
key factor leading to the instability in Europe at that time. The treaty was one
of the reasons why Germany formed the Triple Alliance with Italy and Austria-
Hungary to isolate France. This led to the rise of the alliance system. ... More
importantly, it made the French more resentful towards Germany and sowed
the seeds of national hatred and revenge against Germany in France.
