We can outlook a function as something that maps things of one type to

things of another type. The inverse of a function tells you how to get back to the
original value. We do this a lot in everyday life, without really thinking about it.

For example, when someone calls you on the phone, he or she looks up your
number in a phone book (a function from names to phone numbers). When Caller
ID shows who is calling, it has performed the inverse function, finding the name
corresponding to the number.

Looking at the bright side of learning inverse functions, the skills you will
learn on how to represent an inverse function through its table of values, and
graph, can help you understand that whenever you undo something that you did,
you use an inverse function.

In your previous lesson, you are able to determine the inverse of a one-to-
one function. Once we have a one-to-one function, we can evaluate its inverse at
specific inverse function inputs or construct a complete representation of the
inverse function in many cases.

This learning material will provide you with information and activities that
will deepen your understanding about Inverse Function.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

Learning Competency
 represents an inverse function through its: (a) table of values, and (b)
graph (M11GM-Id-3);

Subtasks:
1. determine the inverse of a given function;
2. illustrate the corresponding inverse of a given graph of a function;

Before going on, check how much you know about this topic. Answer
the pre-test on the next page in a separate sheet of paper.

3
Representing Inverse
Functions through Table of
Values and Graphs

Figure 1. Fruit function and Inverse

Figure 1 shows that when the function turns the apple into a lemon. Then the
inverse function ꔀ turns the lemon back to the apple.

In the previous module you have learned about the Inverse of a One-to-One
Function. In this module, you will learn how represent an inverse function
through its table of values, and graph.

A relation is a set of ordered pairs. A function is a special kind of relation
where there corresponds exactly one for every . There are some functions that
do the opposite of other functions. They are called inverse functions.

A function generates an output from an input .

On the other hand, the inverse function ( ) finds the input that
produces the given output .

In an inverse function, the original output becomes the new input while
the original input becomes the new output. In other words, an inverse function
interchanges the x and the y values.

A function can be represented by a set of ordered pairs. For example, the

function h ., we let set . be the values of the given function and
set ͷ 釀 ͹ be the values of the given function which can be written as follows,

h. ͷ 釀 ͹ .

which can be read as, “The function h . has a set of ͷ 釀 ͹ . .

In this case, by interchanging the first and second coordinates of each of

these ordered pairs, you can form the inverse function of , which is denoted by
. It is a function from the set B to the set A, and can be written as follows,

. ͷ 釀 ͹ .

which can be read as, “The inverse function ( ) . has a set of

ͷ 釀 ͹ ..

Before you proceed with this lesson, you should be able to recall how to find
the inverse of a function.
Given h ., find ( ).

Step 1: Replace ( ) with .

( )
h.

9
Step 2: Interchange and .
h.
h.
Step 3: Solve for using appropriate properties of equality.
h.
.
.
Step 4: Replace the new with ( ).
.

We can also determine the inverse functions through:

A. Table of Values
A table of values can help you understand inverse functions. For instance,
the following table shows several values of the function. Interchange the rows of
this table to obtain values of the inverse function.

h㌠ ㌠
x 1 2 3 4 x 5 6 7 8
y 5 6 7 8 y 1 2 3 4

B. Graph

To graph a function and its inverse, all you have to do is graph the function
and then switch all x and y values in each point to graph the inverse. Just look at
all those values switching places from the f(x) function to its inverse ( ) (and
back again), reflected over the line .

10
h㌠

ꔀ ㌠

EXAMPLE 1
Find the inverse function of h using tables of values and sketch the
graph. ꔀ

h
x - - - - 0 1 x - - - 1 3 5
4 3 2 1 5 3 1
y - - - 1 3 5 y - - - - 0 1
5 3 1 4 3 2 1

Observe the graphs of a function and its inverse. Are their graphs
symmetrical? Notice that the graphs of the original function and its inverse are
reflections of each other along the line . When the images are folded along
that line, the graphs will coincide.
