The School of Education & Cognitive Science (SECS) adheres to the values of scholarship, quality, integrity, diversity,
and equality. Programmes are designed to prepare educators with relevant theory and practice to function in a
global society and teach effectively in culturally and socially diverse classrooms. If you share our goal of making
quality education accessible to more people, thereby improving themselves and the society they belong to, we
encourage you to consider SECS as a place of study.
It seeks to provide the theoretical perspective underlying educational practices and offers opportunities for
advanced study and research towards the development of innovative responses to the challenges of 21st century
education.
You will analyse, critique and develop tools of inquiry about current issues in education. The programme is ideal for
adults like yourself with a busy schedule juggling the demands of work, family and everyday life. The programme
works around your schedule and you are in charge when and where you want to study using your laptop, tablet or
your smartphone.
Programme Delivery
The Master of Education (M.Ed) is delivered ONLINE as follows:
1. SELF-LEARNING – You will be provided with a Self-Instructional Module (SIM) which forms the “Must Know
Content” accompanied with video and audio clips. You should watch the video clips and listen to the audio
clips which explain the key concepts and principles in the SIM. At the end of each Topic is a Quiz which you
can attempt as many times as you like until you understand the main ideas
2. ONLINE DISCUSSION (Delayed) – Using the Forum, WhatsApp and Telegram you will discuss with your
coursemates one questions and exercises posted by the Online Tutor. You can use these tools to ask your
Online Tutor questions about the content, the assignment and other related issues.

1. A laptop or desktop computer to work on
2. You can access MyPLS on your smartphone while on the
go
3. Reasonably good internet speed to download materials,
watch the videos, listen to the podcasts – However, you
can download all of the above and read, watch and
listen offline.
Self-Motivation
1. It is true that studying online requires self-motivation. Most
of the time you will be alone and it so easy to get distracted
by other things.
2. Set yourself goals and keep telling yourself, “I must, I must”.
3. Self-motivation is a useful skill to acquire, a trait that will
make you stand out in the workplace and beyond. It will
look great on your résumé.
4. If possible find a quiet place to study, free of distractions.
Time Management
1. You have to keep focused on deadlines. Oftentimes, it is
not so much management of time but rather
‘management of energy’.
2. You have to determine when is the best time to study or
when your energy level is at its highest that you would
devote when studying online.
3. Study when you're most alert (such as in the morning,
or early evening).
Learn Actively
Learning happens when you are actively involved in
learning. To learn actively, you must engage your mind and
the following are some tips:
1. Rewrite material – e.g. write notes in your own
words or convert text into diagrams
2. Apply concepts, such as by answering questions and
solving problems. You could look at past year
examination questions
3. Recall information – say what you know about a
topic without using notes (in writing, internally or
say out loud).
