Guidebook for Concentration 4

Here are some useful tips on studying online
Tertiary studies will not spoon-feed you your education – you will have to strategy your study schedules, develop
your research skills, and foster a strong, academic discipline all on your own. You may be unsure whether you can
cope studying online without interacting face-to-face with the instructor or other students which you did during
your undergraduate days. Well, not to worry. The following are some tips to assure you that studying online may be
different but it is not difficult.

Technical Requirements
Make sure you have the following:
1. A laptop or desktop computer to work on
2. You can access MyPLS on your smartphone while on the
go
3. Reasonably good internet speed to download materials,
watch the videos, listen to the podcasts – However, you
can download all of the above and read, watch and
listen offline.
Self-Motivation
1. It is true that studying online requires self-motivation. Most
of the time you will be alone and it so easy to get distracted
by other things.
2. Set yourself goals and keep telling yourself, “I must, I must”.
3. Self-motivation is a useful skill to acquire, a trait that will
make you stand out in the workplace and beyond. It will
look great on your résumé.
4. If possible find a quiet place to study, free of distractions.

Time Management
1. You have to keep focused on deadlines. Oftentimes, it is
not so much management of time but rather
‘management of energy’.
2. You have to determine when is the best time to study or
when your energy level is at its highest that you would
devote when studying online.
3. Study when you're most alert (such as in the morning,
or early evening).

Establish a Study Schedule

1. To be consistent in your study well, establish a routine of your own.
The routine should fit your lifestyle that will set aside enough study
time each week.
2. Each 3-credit course requires a minimum of 6 hours of quality study
time a week which includes reading the learning materials, watching
the videos, discussing online with your tutor and other students,
doing the assignment and preparing for the examination
3. Do some work each day, just as you would in a traditional course with
regular classes.

Guidebook for Concentration 5

4. Write detailed ‘To Do Lists’ – check each item when you complete it
5. Stick to your schedule

Read all Learning Materials

All the material needed for a course are provided:
1. Read all material provided – pdf files, ppt slides & others
– Do not skim because they form the ‘must know’
content
2. Watch all videos and listen to the podcasts – Do not skip
because they help you better understand the learning
material
3. Follow links to recommended sites

Talk to Your Online Tutor

1. When doing an online course, you don't get the chance to
have casual conversations with other students before class or
catch the instructor after class.
2. So, it's important for you to talk to your online tutor and talk
to the other students in the course
3. Embrace online communication, which includes email and
posting in student forums.
4. It is important that you follow netiquette guidelines when
talking to others online.
5. There's also a good chance of making some online buddies.

Find Your Inspiration

1. Students often assume online programmes require less
work and are easier than on-campus courses. In reality,
online classes are equally rigorous and demanding as
traditional courses.
2. To stay motivated – even on the bad days – keep
reminding yourself of why you're doing it.

Learn Actively
Learning happens when you are actively involved in
learning. To learn actively, you must engage your mind and
the following are some tips:
1. Rewrite material – e.g. write notes in your own
words or convert text into diagrams
2. Apply concepts, such as by answering questions and
solving problems. You could look at past year
examination questions
3. Recall information – say what you know about a
topic without using notes (in writing, internally or
say out loud).
