Module 2.

1 Benefits & incentives

Reading : More to a career than money
1. For most people the first time they get paid for doing a job is one of the most
exciting moments in their life. It means they have finally earned their own money
and have gained independence. And for many people working is always going to be
about earning enough money to survive. However, money is not the only motivator
and the further you rise in your career the less it becomes the only important factor
in your working life.Companies have also recognised this and in recent years they
have responded in different ways.

2. The introduction of flexible working hours is a motivating factor for many twenty-
first-century employees. An attractive and engaging workspace is another. Some
companies no longer aim for the traditional office environment of white walls and
desks in rows. In fact now there are few walls separating staff in many firms. All staff
work in open-plan areas and might not even have a permanent desk. At firms like
Xerox many staff hot-desk or share a desk with someone else.

3. Modern companies also recognise the need for a space to relax; Pontiflex--a
company in Brooklyn-- set aside one room as a place for a quick nap. A green space
outside with trees and grass to walk on has become as important as the inside of the
office.Companies like Google and Facebook are also famous for their office designs
that make use of fun spaces and bright colours, where employees can gather to do
their work, have a meeting or relax. There are dedicated areas for people to play
games during coffee breaks and gyms with fancy fitness equipment. Adding an
element of surprise to the work day is something that is used in a few companies. For
example, AirBnb organises creative theme days for their staff based on holidays and
events.

4. Of course, other incentive schemes can make the difference between

retaining(=remain) high-performing staff or losing them to competitors. A final-
salary pension scheme or end-of-year bonus scheme will certainly influence an
employee's future plans. Some companies even reward long serving employees with
shares in the business when they retire.Motivation can also come in the form of
smaller perks(津贴补贴) like a paid weekend away or a meal out with the whole
team. For the ambitious employee, training also ranks high when it comes to
motivation and a company that offers ongoing training is more likely to have a lower
staff turnover.

5. In the end motivation is common sense. If you show interest in your employees
lives-in and out of work--and they can see the tangible(实际的) benefits of this, your
employees will be more excited about their work and make the office a happier place
to be.
