COURSE OUTLINE
A. Course Description
The course details with the study on control and testing: electromechanical, analog and digital
measuring and testing instruments; R, L and C measurements; calibration; graphic and waveform
analyzing instruments; detectors for the measurements of process variables; analysis of performance
characteristics of control systems; electronics, magnetic, hydraulic and mechanical control. It includes
principles of controls and test measurements involving sensors, pneumatic controls, actuators, thermal
detectors, thermocouples, thermistor, transducers, PID controllers.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
A. Course Objective

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:


1. Explain the fundamentals of instrumentation and control concept;
2. Be engaged in project planning, material applications, design and installation,operations and/or
maintenance in the fields of measurement, signal processing, control and industrial automation;
3. Be well-rounded individuals with strong personal skills (decision making, analytic
reasoning, problem solving), professional skills (creative thinking, critical thinking,
ethics and responsibilities) and able to work and communicate in team environments.;
4. Participate in endeavors that promote career advancement and life-long learning.;
B. Course Outline
1. Measurement of electric and magnetic quantities and analysis of measurement error.
2. Sensors, Transducers, Transmitters, and Actuators.
3. Data acquisition, AC/DC conversion, signal conditioning, Recording and retrieval.
4. Temperature measurement
5. Measurement of pressure
6. Measurement of flow rate and liquid level.
7. On-off Control

1. Identify and describe basic concept symbols and diagram of control.
2. Demonstrate measuring and testing procedures and identify measurements errors and systems.
3. Differentiate heat and temperature, linear and angular dispalcement, velocity and
acceleration and solve related problem.
4. Tele-metering application and configure control.

COURSE TOPICS
Prelim Period Topics and Activities (Weeks 1–6)
I. Introduction: Discussion and presentation of the Syllabus and Course Requirements and Course
Introduction.
II. Measurement of electric and magnetic quantities and analysis of measurement error:
Selecting Appropriate Instruments, Calibration, Measurement Techniques, Measurement Units,
Analog vs. Digital Instruments, Measurement Errors, Uncertainty Analysis, Error Propagation,
Record Keeping, Data Analysis and Reporting.
III. Sensors, Transducers, Transmitters, and Actuators: Function, Types and Output.
IV. Data acquisition, AC/DC conversion, signal conditioning, Recording and retrieval:
Definition and How it works.
V. Seatwork, Quiz, Assignment, and Prelim Examination
Midterm Period Topics and Activities (Week 7-12)
VI. Temperature measurement: Thermometers, Thermocouples, Resistance Temperature Detectors
(RTDs), Infrared Thermometers, Pyrometers, Thermal Imaging Cameras, Bimetallic Temperature
Gauges, Gas Thermometers, Liquid Crystal Thermometers and Resistance Temperature Transmitters
(RTTs).
VII. Measurement of pressure: Atmospheric Pressure, Gauge Pressure, Absolute Pressure,
Differential Pressure, Hydrostatic Pressure, Dynamic Pressure, Piezoelectric Sensors, Strain Gauges,
Capacitive Sensors and Fiber Optic Pressure Sensors.
VIII. Measurement of flow rate and liquid level: Flow Meters, Ultrasonic Doppler Flow Meters,
Turbine Flow Meters, Electromagnetic Flow Meters, Vortex Flow Meters, Float Level Sensors,
Ultrasonic Level Sensors, Pressure Transmitters, Radar Level Sensors, Capacitance Level Sensors,
Guided Wave Radar Level Sensors, Magneto strictive Level Sensors and Bubbler Level Sensors.
IX. Seatwork, Quiz, Assignment, and Midterm Examination

X. On-off Control: Simplicity, Discrete Control, Hysteresis, Limitations and Energy Efficiency.
