Assignment 1-1

1. Max Planck introduced Planck units of mass, length, and time that are constructed solely from fundamental physical constants including Planck's constant, the speed of light, and Newton's gravitational constant. Dimensional analysis is used to find expressions and values for these Planck units. 2. The path, velocity, and acceleration of a bird flying in the xy-plane is analyzed between 0 and 2 seconds. Its position, velocity, and acceleration vectors are calculated and sketched at t = 2 seconds to determine if it is speeding up, slowing down, or turning. 3. The height of a shelf above a coin toss is calculated so that the coin will land in a dish a horizontal distance

1. A hundred years ago, Max Planck introduced the famous units of Planck mass mp,
Planck length Lp, and Planck time tp. constructed solely out of the three
fundamental constants: reduced Planck constant = h /2 = 1.055× 10-34 J s
(governing laws of quantum physics), the velocity of light c = 2.998×108 m/s
(governing laws of relativity) and Newtonian gravitational constant G = 6.674×10-

m3/ (kg s2). Please use dimensional analysis to find the expressions and the
values of these three Planck units (take the proportional dimensionless constant as
1). (20 points)

2. The coordinates of a bird flying in the xy-plane are given by x(t ) t and
2 2
y (t ) 3.0 m t , where 2.4 m/s and 1.2 m/s . (a) Sketch the path of
the bird between t 0 and t 2.0 s. (b) Calculate the velocity and acceleration
vectors of the bird as functions of time. (c) Calculate the magnitude and direction
of the bird’s velocity and acceleration at t 2.0 s. (d) Sketch the velocity and
acceleration vectors at t 2.0 s. At this instant, is the bird’s speed increasing,
decreasing, or not changing? Is the bird turning? If so, in what direction? (30 points)

3. At a funfair stall, you can win a plush giraffe toy if you toss a coin into a small
dish. The dish is on a shelf above the point where the coin leaves your land and is
a horizontal distance of 2.1 m from this point (Fig. 1). If you toss the coin with a
velocity of 6.4 m/s at an angle of 60 above the horizontal, the coin will land in
the dish. Ignore air resistance. (a) What is the height of the shelf above the point
where the coin leaves your hand? (b) What is the vertical component of the
velocity of the coin just before it lands in the dish? (20 points)

4. Our balance is maintained, at least in part, by the endolymph fluid in the inner ear.
Spinning displaces this fluid, causing dizziness. Suppose that a skater is spinning
very fast at 2.8 revolutions per second about a vertical axis through the center of
his head. Take the inner ear to be approximately 7.0 cm from the axis of spin. (The
distance varies from person to person.) What is the radial acceleration (in m/s2 and
in g’s) of the endolymph fluid? (10 points)

5. An airplane pilot wishes to fly due west. A wind of 80.0 km/h is blowing toward
the south. (a) If the airspeed of the plane (its speed in still air) is 320.0 km/h, in
which direction should the pilot head? (b) What is the speed of the plane over the
ground? Draw a vector diagram. (20 points)
