When I was Dreaming

When I was a kid, a lot of people repeatedly asked me about my dream when I became an
adult. I remember that I usually tell them that I want to be a carpenter, not because I want it, but
because it is the only career I know and that is the common thing kids might say. Back then, I
actually did not want to talk about it. I just want to play, make friends, and draw. However, as I
grew older, I began to wonder why they asked this question. It is because having a dream can bring
me towards success one day.
It takes time for me to decide what path I should take. Other teenagers and adults can easily
talk about it because they can obviously afford it. For me, I have to decide seriously. I need to
consider what can make my life better, what can help to provide for my family. In view of the fact
that I do not came from a rich family, we are financially unstable. When I entered high school, I
experienced and learned many things that helped me come up with a dream of being a computer
engineer. I chose based on where my knowledge and abilities fit, as well as how much money I
could make with that option. I knew how to explore the computer and make different presentations
digitally. But there is always this barrier that stops me from dreaming, which is money. Some
people say that money is not a barrier in achieving goals, but for the people like me, it is. Even
though how much hardworking I am at school, it is hard to study when there is not enough money
to support my projects and needs in school. I believe that it plays an important role in our lives,
for us to be accountable to our responsibilities.
As soon as I entered the K-12 senior high school, I promised myself that I would do better
and be better so that I would have many opportunities one day. I am grateful that it happened.
When I was in 12th grade, I was able to present myself for a scholarship. One of my teachers
recommended me for the YMCA financial assistance. She saw my hard work and potential. I got
accepted. Thus, it became an inspiration to me to study harder and bring my best. It also helped
my family a lot. I give my parent the money to buy some of our necessities, especially in the time
of the pandemic where we are plunged into poverty. With the mercy of God, I was able to graduate
senior high school with one of the highest honors in our school.
Now, I am in college taking my dream course, computer engineering. Another opportunity
came to me. I was once called to apply again for a scholarship, and it is with the same organization
I was part of when I was in senior high. I was asked why I deserved it. I can say that it is because
I am still dreaming. Being part of the YMCA is always memorable. It taught me not only to go out
of my comfort zone, but to use my privilege properly. To be mindful that I am lucky, because not
all people have this opportunity. If I will be accepted again, I will use the money for my education
and something to share with my family. Moreover, I will save some because I have to buy a laptop
to use for my course. I will promise that the opportunity given to me will be worth it. Nothing will
be wasted.
