The Best Five Universities in Indonesia

Where do you find the best universities in the world? Well, pretty much
anywhere - including Indonesia! Cool, huh? In Indonesia you can find plenty of
top-ranked universities that take their rightful place next to some of the biggest
international university names out there.

Indonesia's universities, colleges, medical schools, engineering schools, and law


schools are highly respected and well-known in the education and academic
communities, and they continue to offer prestigious Bachelor's, Master's, and

from some of the most competitive degrees in the best universities in Indonesia.

Eight universities in Indonesia are featured among the world’s best in the QS
World University Rankings® 2021, including three in the top 450. These are:

University of Indonesia

Established in 1849, Universitas Indonesia (University of Indonesia, or UI) is the


oldest university in Indonesia and also joint 305th in the World University
Rankings. Universitas Indonesia also ranks 59th in the QS Asia University
Rankings, and has campuses in Depok, West Java and Jakarta. The university’s
library is considered the largest in Southeast Asia, with a capacity of 1.5million
books.

Universitas Indonesia underwent substantial reform in 2007, which led to an


increase in revenue and research publications. The university’s distinctive logo
signifies the idea of kala-makara (the two sources of energy in nature, from the
sun and the Earth); the tree represents science and its branches and buds which
will blossom into new knowledge, while the water pouring down represents the
works of science.

Bandung Institute of Technology

Ranked joint 313th in the world rankings, and 62nd in the Asia
rankings, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) was originally opened in 1920 as
a branch of the Dutch Delft Institute of Technology. It was then known
as Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng, but was renamed when it became a
separate academic entity in 1959. ITB has since become an internationally
recognized university, and is ranked among the top 300 institutions in the world
for mechanical engineering. It teaches around 20,000 students and is located in
Bandung (one of Indonesia’s largest cities) with its campuses making up a total
area of 770,000 square meters.

Gadjah Mada University

Another of the most prestigious universities in Indonesia, Gadjah Mada


University (UGM) is ranked joint 254th in the QS World University Rankings and
joint 57th in Asia. Founded in 1949, it’s the largest university in the country, with
around 50,000 students enrolled in 18 faculties, including 1,187 foreign students.
Its 360-acre main campus is located in one of the country’s smaller cities,
Yogyakarta, helping to earn the city a reputation as a center of education. UGM
has recently been implementing an "educopolis area", creating an encouraging
learning environment by developing multidisciplinary collaborations and
responding to key environmental issues.

IPB University

IPB University is a higher education institution that produces both national and
internationally acclaimed innovations. For ten years in a row (2008-2018), IPB
University has been the number one university in Indonesia in terms of
producing the most innovations in the country. This achievement was appraised
by the Business Innovation Center of Indonesia’s Ministry of Research,
Technology, and Higher Education with the award of Indonesia’s Most
Prospective Innovation.

IPB University offers various courses in tertiary education, from diploma,


undergraduate, post-graduate, to professional program. Currently, there are
nine faculties, namely: Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Fisheries and Marine
Science, Animal Science, Forestryand Environment, Agricultural Engineering and
Technology, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Economics and Management,
and Human Ecology, as well as three schools, namely: Business School, Graduate
School, and VocationalSchool.

IPB University Ranked #1 in South-East Asia in the QS World University Ranking


by Subject Agriculture and Forestry, making IPB University the best agricultural
university in Indonesia. IPB University has also placed #511-520 in the QS World
University Ranking and #112 in the QS Asia University Ranking.
As a research university, IPB has 24 research centers with agendas focusing on
food, energy, environment, poverty alleviation, and biomedicine. We have
launched the new concept of Agro-Maritime 4.0 to strengthen the
interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary research foci. In 2021, IPB University has 37
consortia, including 9 new consortia. As many as 1000 students graduate from
IPB University each year, creating a strong network of over 100,000 alumni

Airlangga University

Airlangga University Postgraduate program has been founded since November


10, 1954. The promotion to get the doctorate was held for the first time in 1959.
Thus, in 1959 until 1976, Airlangga University has generated ten doctors. On that
time, the free program was used to get the doctorate title.Since 1975, the
Minister of Academic and Culture has been formulated the basic policy of the
Higher Education development. In accordance with it, Airlangga University start
to develop the program of post graduate and graduate studies with three study
programs; Basic Medicine Science, Dentistry Science, and Law Science in 1976.
For the next, several study programs are opened until now.In fact, the
postgraduate program is started after the Dean inauguration based on letter of
the Minister of Academic and Culture on March 10, 1983. Thus, the post
graduate programs are considered since 1983 and start the class on September
1983.After years, based on the Rector decision on July 30, 2007, the eighteenth
masters/magisters programs have been delivered to each Faculties in order to
get the more effective and efficient education in Airlangga University.
