Overview
Johnson Controls® offers a variety of Metasys software packages scaled to meet the requirements
of your Metasys sites.
In addition to software options for new Metasys installations, we also offer upgrade, migration, and
site subscription software packages to continually improve and expand your existing Metasys sites.
These various software offerings allow you to keep your Metasys site up-to-date, with the latest
features, capabilities, and performance enhancements that increase the value of your investment.
For additional information, refer to the Metasys Software Security and Support (LIT-12013786).
The current software release version varies by Metasys product. For the current version of each
product, see Table 6 in Ordering information.
Metasys software offerings include the following:
• New software: New Metasys software is available for sites that do not have a previous version
of the Metasys software installed.
• Upgrade software: Metasys upgrade software provides the latest software revision for the
following products: Application and Data Servers/Extended Application and Data Servers (ADSs/
ADXs), Open Application Servers (OASs), Metasys for Validated Environments (MVE) extended
architecture software, Network Engines (NxE85s), and LonWorks Control Servers (LCS85s) on
sites with previous versions of the Metasys software.
• Migration software: You can use Metasys migration software to migrate from a previous major
release to a more current release and to increase or decrease the number of users on your
existing Metasys site.
• Feature software: Metasys feature software includes add-on applications that offer additional
functionality to the Metasys system. For Metasys User Interface (UI), such add-ons include fault
detection and fault triage. For the Open Application Server (OAS), add-ons include features
such as historical data, potential problem areas, and scheduled reports. Other applications are
FIPS 140-2 compliance, Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS), an API for monitoring and
commanding the Metasys system, and BACnet/SC.
• Site subscription services: A Metasys site subscription service provides automatic and
economical Metasys upgrades for either one full year or three full years after purchase.
• Copy software: DVD media reproductions of Metasys software offerings are discontinued. You
can now obtain Metasys software electronically from the License Portal.
Depending on the package, Metasys software options include Metasys server, network engine, user
interface applications, system and controller configuration tools, database utilities, and reporting
tools. Some Metasys software packages include Microsoft® SQL Server® database software. For
specific product information, see Table 4.

What's new
• From Metasys Release 13.0, Metasys UI is the primary interface for SNC and SNE (SNx) series
network automation engines and controllers. These engines no longer ship from the factory
with SMP resource files.
• The Metasys Device Packages (MS-DP-0) now include device package files that support the new
Johnson Controls BACnet Router and Modbus Gateway products, in addition to existing network
engine packages.

Metasys software definitions

Here are some definitions of terms to help you determine the most efficient and economical way to
build, maintain, and enhance your Metasys sites.
Major release
A major Metasys software release includes significant new products, features, and enhancements.
Major releases are indicated by a new major release number followed by a dot zero (x.0). For
example, Release 12.0 and Release 13.0 are major releases. Upgrading Release 12.x software to
Release 13.0 is a major upgrade.
Minor release
A minor Metasys software release provides minor product and feature enhancements. Minor
releases are indicated by a new minor release number following the associated major release
number. For example, Release 10.1 is a minor release. Upgrading Release 10.0 software to Release
10.1 is a minor upgrade.
Required
A required third-party software application or component is necessary to install and operate a
Metasys system. Required software may be included with your Metasys software purchase; some
required software must be purchased separately. Examples of required software include supported
Microsoft operating systems (OSs), Microsoft SQL Server database software, and third-party
antivirus software.
Included
An included software application or component is part of your Metasys software purchase. Included
software may be required or may be optional software applications, components, or tools that
provide additional functions and features. Optional Metasys software components and tools such
as the Metasys Export Utility (MEU), System Configuration Tool (SCT), and Controller Configuration
Tool (CCT) are not included with ADS/ADX software. These products must be purchased and
licensed separately, unless Metasys server software has been purchased using a subscription.
For more information on the software included in the Metasys offerings, see Table 4 and Table
5 in Ordering information. Required or optional software that is not included with your Metasys
software purchase and must be purchased from Johnson Controls or a third-party vendor. For
example, Microsoft OSs and antivirus software must be purchased separately. Depending on the
Metasys software package, SQL Server software may be included or may need to be purchased
separately.

Software license
A Metasys software license is required for each ADS/ADX, ADS-Lite, OAS, MVE, NAE85, and LCS85
on a Metasys system site. Each computer or server package on a site must be licensed after a new
installation and re-licensed after any major upgrade to the current release. Also, every ADS/ADX
that is migrated must be re-licensed after the migration. Many other software applications and
tools require licensing. See Licensing information for more details.
Metasys for Validated Environments
Metasys for Validated Environments (MVE) extended architecture is for facilities that require
regulatory compliance for their environmental systems. MVE brings the flexibility and convenience
of a web interface to your regulated facility. MVE is specifically designed to help customers address
United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) Title 21, Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) Part
11 compliance.
At Release 12.0.50, MVE includes both MVE on SMP, as well as MVE on Metasys UI. Users can work in
either SMP UI or Metasys UI and can go back and forth between them.
MVE software does not include an ADX; you must order ADX software separately from MVE
software. The MVE product codes are MS-MVE-0 (new) and MS-MVE-6 (upgrade). The user capacity
of the MVE software is determined by the user capacity of the purchased ADX software. For
example, if you purchase a 25-user ADX, ordering MS-MVE-0 supports a 25-user MVE site. For more
MVE product information, refer to Metasys for Validated Environments on Site Management Portal
Catalog Page and Metasys for Validated Environments on Metasys UI Catalog Page (LIT-1901214).
Important: You can install MVE software on a Metasys ADX only. The ADX and validated
network engines on the Metasys network must be at the same release level as the MVE
software. At Release 12.0.50, the SMP UI license is included with the MVE license and does not
need to be purchased separately.

Metasys software package details

See the various tables under Ordering information for software package descriptions, included and
required software, number of users, number of objects, and product code numbers for ordering
new, upgrade, migration, and site subscription Metasys software packages.
New, upgrade, migration, and site subscription software packages do not include the required
Microsoft operating systems. Some Metasys software packages do not include the required SQL
Server database software. Antivirus software is not included. Required or optional third-party
applications must be purchased separately. The required Metasys hardware (computers, servers,
engines, and controllers) is not included with Metasys software packages.
Upgrading or migrating your Metasys system may require upgrading third-party software such
as the Microsoft OS and the SQL Server database software. All third-party upgrades must be
purchased separately, except for the Metasys software packages that include SQL Server.
Only Johnson Controls technicians or Johnson Controls authorized representatives may install
Metasys software. Metasys software prices may not include the labor to install the software.

New Metasys software

New software is current-release Metasys software packages for original (new project) installation
at sites that do not have a previous release of Metasys software installed. New Metasys software
packages are identified by a -0 suffix on the product code number.
Note: ADS/ADX, ADS-Lite, OAS, NAE85, and LCS85 software packages are sold per computer or
server, not per site.

You must license new Metasys software after installation. For information on licensing, see
Licensing information.

Metasys upgrade software

Upgrade software is current-release Metasys software for upgrading products, such as the ADS/
ADX, OAS, MVE, NAE85, and LCS85, at sites that have a previous major release of the Metasys
software already installed . For example, upgrading Release 12.x or earlier software to Release 13.0.
Metasys upgrade software packages are identified by a -6 suffix on the product code number.
Metasys upgrade software packages may also include upgrades to the current supported Microsoft
SQL Server software. For example, upgrading an existing ADX10 to an ADX10SQL.
For major upgrades, such as, upgrading Release 12.x or earlier to Release 13.0, you must purchase
a current Metasys upgrade software package. You can upgrade from any previous major release to
the current major release.
For minor upgrades, such as, upgrading Release 10.0 to Release 10.1, your Johnson Controls
representative can upgrade the site.
Note: Typically, there is no cost for Metasys software for minor upgrades. However, not all
minor release software packages are at no cost. For more information, contact your local
Johnson Controls representative.
To determine if you must re-license your upgrade software, see Licensing information.

Metasys migration software

Migration software is current Metasys software packages for upgrading an existing ADS or ADX
to the current release version and migrating the ADS or ADX to a different number of users. For
examples, see the following table. Metasys migration software packages are identified by a -8 suffix
on the product code number. For software migration code number examples, see Table 6.

from the OASMIN (OAS Minimum) to the OASSTD (OAS Standard).
All software migrations require re-licensing after the migration. The software license reflects the
number of users and the object count for which the software is licensed. For more information on
licensing, see Licensing information.

Site subscription services

Site subscription services ensure that the subscriber automatically receives every major and minor
Metasys release upgrade for either one year or three years after purchasing the site subscription.
The upgrade software on media or disks is no longer sent automatically to the customer when
the next release is available. Software is now available for download and licensing through the
License Portal. For customer sites that do not have Internet access, an offline method for obtaining
a license is available. For details, refer to Software Manager Help (LIT-12012389).
A newly placed one-year subscription service order is active for one year from the day that the
subscriber is billed for the service. For a newly placed three-year subscription service order, the
order is active for three years from the day that the subscriber is billed. However, for either level

of service, the subscriber does not receive any software until the next Metasys release (major or
minor) is available for shipping. When the next release is available, subscription service orders are
automatically processed. Metasys site subscription software packages are identified by an -SCS
(one year) or -SC3 (three years) suffix on the product code number.
When you order a site subscription service, identify the Metasys software package or packages on
the site for which you want to purchase a subscription service. If you purchase a site subscription
for the Metasys Server software, you also receive one copy of the latest versions of the following
products at each release:
• Network Engine images
• Metasys Export Utility
• SCT
• CCT
• Device Package files
• Field Controller Package files
• MCT (Mass Changes Tool)
Note: MCT is not purchasable on its own. It is delivered with subscriptions and tool
bundles.
When you purchase a site subscription, your Metasys site must be at the current major release
level. For example, if you have ADS/ADX Release 12.x software and the currently available release
for an ADS/ADX is Release 13.0, you must purchase an upgrade to Release 13.0 before you can
purchase a site subscription.
For an MVE site that has a subscription service, you must order the appropriate ADX site
subscription as well as the MVE site subscription. Ordering just the MVE subscription does not
include the ADX. Metasys Release 13.0 does not support MVE. The latest Metasys Release to MVE is
Release 12.0.50. While the site subscription entitles a site to a Metasys 13.0 license, sites requiring
MVE should upgrade the ADX server to Metasys Release 12.0.50 along with purchasing the MS-MVE
license.
Site subscription services are not automatically renewed. You must renew your site subscription
at the end of the site subscription agreement. Metasys site subscription services have a no-refund
policy.

Configuration tool use

You must license the Metasys Configuration Tools before use. These tools include the following:
• System Configuration Tool (SCT), includes Johnson Controls System Configuration Tool (JCT)
• Metasys Field Controller Package
• Metasys Device Package
• Controller Configuration Tool (CCT)
- Johnson Controls Sensor/Actuator (SA) Bus Device Package
Note: Johnson Controls Sensor/Actuator (SA) Bus Device Package is a licensed feature
within the CCT product. You can access and download the content associated with this
license separately through the Johnson Controls SA Bus Device Packages product
on the License Portal. To ensure that the license applies to both CCT and the Johnson
Controls SA Bus Device Packages product, import Johnson Controls SA Bus Device
Packages before you license CCT.

installation guides for these tools.

The following Metasys software and tools require licensing with the Software Manager and the
online licensing portal:
• Metasys Server: ADS, ADX, ADS-Lite, and OAS
• Metasys software engine: NAE85, LCS85

Server software and the Monitoring and Commanding API add-on license from Release
12.0 or later, do not need to purchase a new license, as their current license will continue to
work for later releases.
• Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) for Metasys Server

• Metasys Fault Detection
Note: Metasys Fault Detection is available only on non-MVE sites.

Note: At Releases 12.0 and 13.0, SMP is a licensable feature and is only available to certain
Metasys site types and restricted from others, as listed below:
- SMP is available for new and existing MVE sites. For MVE sites, the SMP feature license
does not need to be purchased separately, as it is included with the MVE license.
- SMP is not available for new, non-MVE Metasys installations.
- SMP is available for existing Metasys sites upgrading to 12.0 or 13.0. The SMP feature
license must be purchased separately.

Note: MCT is available through TL-BUNDLEMS-0 and Metasys server subscriptions only.
The Metasys applications and tools listed above do not function until licensed. Licensing is required
after a new installation and after a major upgrade or migration. However, when you upgrade
an application to a minor release, re-licensing is not required; you can continue using the same
license. MVE software is the only exception; it requires re-licensing for both major and minor
releases.

Software licensing
The Software Manager and its associated License Portal are used to license Metasys software
products. For more information, refer to Software Manager Help (LIT-12012389) and the specific
Metasys software product installation guides.

ADS/ADX concurrent users

Use the following table to help you determine the ADS/ADX user product that you need to order.
The table provides examples of the total number of supported users who can be simultaneously
logged on the SMP and Metasys UI.
Note: The following information provides the supported concurrent user limitations. Usage
beyond the supported limitations can cause system or server performance issues.

For example, as shown in Table 3, with a 5-user ADS or ADS-Lite, 5 Metasys UI users are supported
if no SMP users are logged in, or 3 Metasys UI users are supported if 2 SMP users are logged in.
Similarly, with a 50-user ADX, 50 Metasys UI users are supported if no SMP users are logged in,
or 40 Metasys UI users are supported if 10 SMP users are logged in. The only Metasys UI user
restriction applies to a 100-user ADX: no more than 50 Metasys UI users are supported, regardless
of the number of SMP users.

Ordering information
The following tables provide product codes for ordering new software, upgrades, migrations, and
site subscriptions.
• Table 4: lists Metasys software package details, including number of users and required SQL
Server database software.
• Table 5: lists the included or enabled software for the base software packages.
• Table 6: lists the new, upgrade, migration, and site subscription service packages available at
the current release.
The base product codes described in Table 4 are not orderable software packages. For the complete
product code numbers for the Metasys software packages that are available at Release 13.0, see
Table 6. For more information regarding software license requirements, refer to the Microsoft®
Windows® Operating System and SQL Server Software License Requirements appendix of the Network
