Course
Description
This course is designed to explore the
entrepreneurial mindset and culture utilizing a
technology or engineering background. The
course fit into goals of starting a company or
being involved in an entrepreneurial or R&D
effort in companies of all sizes and industries.
Hence technopreneurship is applicable in
training future scientist and engineers to
participate in Research and Development (R&D)
activities. In this course, the students are ought
to design a product or solution in accordance
with engineering standards and function on
multidisciplinary teams. They are ought to
understand societal impact of engineering
solutions and be able to immerse as a team
member, leader in managing projects.

The course is culminating in a final team presentation


event.

The course is divided into three overlapping segments:


Ideation & Team Formation, Customer & Market
Validation, Story & Prototype Development

1. Technopreneurship is innovative application of technical
science and knowledge individually or by a group of
persons, who create and manage a business and take it
financial risk in order to achieve their goals and
perspectives.
2. It is a process of merging technology prowess and
entrepreneurial talent and skills.

Entrepreneur
An innovator or developer who recognizes and seizes
opportunities; converts these opportunitires into
workable/marketable ideas; adds value through time, effort,
money or skills; assumes the risks of the competitive
marketplace to implement these ideas; realizes the rewards
from these efforts. (Kuratko & Hodgetts, 2007)

Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is the practice of embarking on a
new business or reviving an existing business by
pooling together a bunch of resources in order to
exploit new found opportunities

Technopreneur

An entrepreneur who uses cutting-edge technology to


develop new business. (Daniel Mankani, 2003)
Is an entrepreneur who involves himself in technological
changes in producing goods and services for his
organization. (Sarimah Hanim & Abd. Rashid, 2008)
They are entrepreneurs who used "technology" as their
driven factor in transforming resources into goods and
services, creating an environment conducive to
industrial growth.

Technopreneur - is the person who destroys the existing economic order by introducing,
new products and services, by creating new forms of organizations and by exploiting new
raw
materials. - It is someone who perceives an opportunity and creates an
organization to pursue it. A person who undertakes risks that has the chance of profit.
- Technopreneurs distinguishes themselves through their ability to
accumulate and manage knowledge, as well as their ability to mobilized resources to
achieve a
specified business or social goal.

It is simply entrepreneurship in a technology-intensive context.
It is a process of merging technology prowess and entrepreneurial
talent and skills.
They create products out of intellectual property.

So what is technology?

It could be science based. It could be IT. It could be something in agriculture.

What is common among all of these? They create products out of intellectual property. IP
means something that comes from your mind, not necessarily a patent, but something
creative from your mind.

A technopreneur has an idea and sets up a business around that idea. The business and
the idea are both grounded in a particular technology.

Who is Intrapreneur?
Are individuals in organizations with high entrepreneurial
characteristics. (Pinchot 1985)
Is an entrepreneur within a large organization with high
entrepreneurial characteristics who strongly believes in his talent
and ability and has a strong desire to create something using his
own initiative and creativity. (Sarimah Hanim & Abd. Rashid, 2008)
In the world corporate business, intrapreneurs emerge as that breed
who is a cross between managers and entrepreneurs.
They work for the corporation but are given the task of starting new
ventures.

Ken Kutaragi works in Sony’s sound labs
Kutaragi developed the SPC7000 for the next
generation of Nintendo machines.
With Sony’s blessing, Kutaragi worked with
Nintendo to develop a CD-ROM-based

Kutaragi helped Sony develop its own gaming
system, which became the PlayStation.

Why Technopreneurship is
important?

It’s will not just help you but also help the country. It’s very important for us realize
that technology entrepreneurship is very important for everybody.

Look at the chart below. It stacks up all the different revenues of the companies
mentioned previously. Apple, HP, Intel, Cisco, Google and Oracle. And as you can see that
if we stack up all the revenue it’s bigger than the GDP of the Philippines or the output of
the an emerging market like our country. So what I challenge every student of this course
is to dream big. Figure out if your idea can actually become perhaps the next Cisco or the
next Google. It’s will not just help you but also help the country. It’s very important for us
realize that technology entrepreneurship is very important for everybody.

Write in a clean sheet of yellow paper.

1. Explain what is the concept of Technopreneurship. Why is it needed to


include in Engineering?
2. As a future engineer someday. Look around in the places you grow up
list some things that you think needs innovations. And discuss how you
will going to do it.
