LESSON 2: PROPERTIES OF REAL NUMBERS

Objective:

 Identify the property of real number illustrated on each equation.

Properties of Real Numbers

In this lesson, we look at some properties that apply to all real numbers. If you learn these properties,
they will help you solve problems in arithmetic easier. Let’s look at each property in detail, and apply it
to real numbers.

1. CLOSURE
Real numbers are closed with respect to addition, subtraction and multiplication. What about
division? Well, division is not closed since we cannot divide a number by 0.

2. COMMUTATIVE
The commutative property allows you to perform addition operations and multiplication
operations in any order you wish.
Examples:
3+4=4+3 Commutative Property of Addition
3x4=4x3 Commutative Property of Multiplication

3. ASSOCIATIVE
When performing addition or multiplication on three numbers, the associative property allows
you to group them together in any order you wish.
Examples:
(2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4) Associative Property of Addition
(2 x 3) x 4 = 2 x (3 x 4) Associative Property of Multiplication

4. DISTRIBUTIVE
This one involves addition and multiplication operations being performed together.
Example: 2 x (3 + 4) = (2 x 3) + (2 x 4)

5. IDENTITY
The numbers 0 and 1 play an important role in math, since they do absolutely nothing.

o Any number plus 0 equals itself.

Example: 3 + 0 = 0 + 3 = 3.
Zero (0) is called the identity for addition.
o Any number multiplied by 1 is equal to itself.
Example: 3 x 1 = 1 x 3 = 3.
The number 1 is called the identity for multiplication.
6. INVERSE
The negative and the reciprocal play an important role in addition and multiplication.
o Any number plus its negative is equal to 0.
Example: 3 + -3 = 0, where -3 is called the additive inverse of 3.
o Any number multiplied by its reciprocal is equal to 1.
Example: 4 x ¼ = 1, where ¼ is called the multiplicative inverse of 4.
