This document discusses a study that aims to develop an artificial vision system to help the visually impaired with navigation and mobility using machine learning and computer vision. The system would provide real-time auditory and tactile feedback by detecting obstacles, recognizing objects, and interpreting the environment to guide users. The study introduces the challenges faced by the visually impaired, such as difficulties with spatial perception and navigation. It then outlines the proposed system which uses sensors and wearable devices and computer vision algorithms to analyze the environment and provide navigation assistance through auditory feedback. The goal of the research is to enhance independence and quality of life for the visually impaired through integrating AI and machine learning technologies.

ABSTRACT
This study addresses the pressing challenge of enabling enhanced navigation and mobility for
individuals with visual impairments using cutting-edge machine learning and artificial
intelligence (AI) technologies. The problem at hand pertains to the limitations faced by the
visually impaired in their daily routines, where obstacles and environmental cues often pose
significant barriers to safe and independent movement. In response, this research presents a
novel system that harnesses the power of AI and machine learning to augment the navigation
capabilities of the visually impaired.
The Artificial Vision System for the visually impaired is an innovative project developed to
help the blind in most of their day-to-day activities. Our project aims to develop an
innovative assistive technology to enhance the navigation and mobility of individuals with
visual impairments. The system leverages cutting-edge computer vision techniques to provide
real-time auditory and tactile feedback, enabling users to navigate through complex
environments with increased safety and autonomy. The research methodology employed
involves the development of a sophisticated sensory system integrated with wearable devices
and sensors. These sensors leverage computer vision algorithms to interpret the surrounding
environment, detect obstacles, recognize objects, and provide real-time auditory feedback to
the user.
In conclusion, the integration of machine learning and AI technologies holds substantial
promise in addressing the challenges faced by the visually impaired community. This
research presents a viable solution to enhance navigation and mobility, fostering greater
independence and quality of life for individuals with visual impairments.
1.0 CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Our project titled the Artificial Vision System is a hardware-based system that aims at helping the
visually impaired in their daily interaction with the environment.
Our project aims at helping the blind in their day-to-day interaction with the environment. The system
helps the visually impaired with tasks like reading texts, identifying common objects and avoiding
obstacles. We believe these are the main challenges faced by the visually impaired and our system will
be able to provide assistance in all the stated areas.
Study by World Health Organization has shown that over 2 billion people are living with visual
impairment both young and old.
Individuals with visual impairments often struggle with accurate spatial perception hindering their
ability to navigate safely and independently. There is need for a system that can provide real-time,
context-aware navigation assistance to guide users through both indoor and outdoor environments
while considering obstacles, pathways and points of interest Furthermore They lack the ability to do
things such reading and they depend on other senses such as touch for identifying objects.
Our passion and skills in technology led us to think of a way we can use our skills to provide help to
the blind. We chose the visually impaired because we feel they are one of the most disadvantaged and
left out-people in the society. Our project aims to give the blind a chance to feel equal in the society
and help them live a normal stress-free life.
Many attempts have been made to provide assistance to the blind such as inventions like the walking
stick invented by James Biggs which helps the visually impaired in navigation, and the braille
invented by Louis Braille which assists in reading. Although the inventions have been of help to the
blind they do not fully satisfy all of their needs their invention majorly focuses on solving one
problem.
1.2 JUSTIFICATION OF STUDY
The blind are people in the society without the ability to see. They have trouble in areas such
as navigation, object identification and they are not able to read. Many innovative ideas have
been brought to the table to assist the blind in the stated areas although none of them fully
cater for the needs of the blind. For example, the walking stick by James Biggs was designed
to help the blind avoid obstacles by detecting them while walking although the size and
nature of the obstacle cannot be fully established. Another invention called the braille
machine invented by Louis Braille was designed to help the blind in reading although the
invention depends on the sense of touch and the user is supposed to have the knowledge of
reading braille which is both tiresome and a bit time-wasting. Lastly is an invention by the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology called the Finger-mounted reading device for the blind
also had its limitations in that the device depended on the ability of the user to point at the
words they wanted the device to read which is very ironic given that the blind can’t see.
Our projects aims at solving all the stated limitations giving the blind the ability to read,
identify objects and easily navigate from place to place. We feel that the Artificial Vision
System will give the blind a chance to have a normal life in the society.
